It has always amazed me that for how much of a Loras town the city of Dubuque is...it doesn't translate into supporting their athletic teams.  The football games we would go to at the Rock Bowl weren't sold out.  The basketball games would be packed at the Loras fieldhouse, but then again that was a pretty small place.

I remember a stat back in the '60s that Dubuque had about 65,000 people then and was 80% Catholic.  That would translate into a sense of loyalty by a large portion of the town for Loras but it didn't always translate into people showing up at athletic events.

I worked part-time at WDBQ (The Mighty 1490) in those days and the station carried the Mutual Network Notre Dame football broadasts every Saturday and that seemed to be where the real loyalty was (Hawkeye football notwithstanding) with a big listenership and good local sponsors.  The other station in town, KDTH would broadcast a few UD and Loras games and except for die-hards, I don't think many people listened.

So I hear Ashton Northern is going to be hired by his old coach Eric Raeburn at Wabash.  Not sure in what capacity.  Could be a rumor.
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

I know April showers bring May flowers but what does April snow bring.  It is actually rain mixed with snow.  This is a long winter.

Apparently it brings sunshine and dry days to the North County San Diego area.   8)

Thanks for sucking up all the available precipitation.  Mighty charitable of you.   :D

Thanks Floyd that was interesting.  I wondered what that boasting was about.  Is there a resource that shows who the teams were in the IC at that time?  Did Loras and St Ambrose play a full schedule those years?

Hey DutchFan,

The Iowa Conference Story: Forty Years of Intercollegiate Sports, 1922-1961 by Buck Turnbull is one of the places that I like to look for old information.  The school websites are good for a lot of information, but the Iowa Conference Story actually has the league standings during those years for football and basketball.  They also have the standings for the conference track meets during those years.

I have got a few copies of the book because the State Historical Society of Iowa still has them in copy in paperback (as of several years ago).  I think they also still sell them for the publishing price of $3.00 (what it cost back in 1961).  It was a great deal back in 2002 or whenever I got them!

I personally also enjoy having copies of The Noble Norsemen by Coach Pete Peterson and some of my other older Luther history/sports books, but I bet many on here would enjoy having a copy of the a conference history book laying around the house.

Schools in the Iowa Conference for football back in 1946-1951:

Upper Iowa
Luther
Central
St. Ambrose
Parsons
Dubuque
Simpson
Iowa Wesleyan
Buena Vista
Wartburg
Western Union (1923-1944, 1946-1947) became Westmar (1948-1951) at LeMars
Loras
William Penn
Iowa Conference Football Champions in 1932, 1935, 1938, 1941, 1954, 1957, 1960, 1963, 1970, 1971, 1978

Enrollment numbers at Iowa Conference member schools as of 1961:

B.V. - 712 students (404 men, 308 women)
Central - 504 students (308 men, 196 women)
Dubuque - 610 students (385 men, 225 women)
Luther - 1,239 students (692 men, 547 women)
Iowa Wesleyan - 583 students (350 men, 233 women)
Parsons (in Fairfield) - 1,610 students (1,175 men, 435 women)
Simpson - 675 students (397 men, 278 women)
Wartburg - 1,050 students (589 men, 461 women)
Upper Iowa - 646 students (465 men, 181 women)
William Penn - 389 students (220 men, 169 women)

Even back in 1961 the odds weren't good of meeting women in Fayette. :D
Iowa Conference Football Champions in 1932, 1935, 1938, 1941, 1954, 1957, 1960, 1963, 1970, 1971, 1978

Thanks, Floyd for that info.  I emailed the IIAC recently and asked if they had historical football standings they could email me instead of just the conference champions like they listed on their website but they never replied to me.

I will check to see if I can get me a copy of that book.  It sounds interesting.

I caught the tail end of a story on the morning radio.  Maybe others heard this as well.  I am under the impession that Chicago is on the brink of breaking the world record for consecutive days with out reaching 70 degrees for an outside temperature.  I believe the world record is 182 and we are 12 short of that over here.  I am starting to feel like I am in some type of black hole that is now the weather.  I think my vitiamin D levels have fallen to record low levels!

Klop,

WORLD record?!  I dare say there are locations in Antarctica (and perhaps Siberia, Greenland, etc.) which have NEVER hit 70 degrees.  And no doubt inhabited places in Alaska, Canada, etc., where any year they ever went ONLY 182 days between hitting 70 would be a clear sign of global warming. ;D

Cheer up - spring WILL arrive!

Although I do agree with what you said above, these statements were taking into consideration locations that will reach the 70 degree mark.  The weather person was talking about locations that have the 4 season and are not extreem examples as you stated above.  As I am sure you would agree, their are world records taken for everything.  Such as how many times can you walk from one place to another considering you are wearing purple shoes that are 5 years old and you only walk 3 hours a day.

Cheering up is hard to do when your emotions are frozen along with everything else.

Klop,

I understand your pain!  I've been through 38 winters in SE Michigan now, and if we ever had a year without hitting 70 at least once before mid-April, I can't recall it.  We're now hitting mid-40s to upper 50s regularly, but still not a single day where t-shirts are in order.  Yuck! :P

April is supposed to be when coeds first start sunning themselves! :D

I can put up with the cold temps, but its the day-after-day of not seeing the sun that gets to me.  Here in west Michigan, the average number of days with sun in December is 3 and it takes a big jump to 4 in January.

Man, we agree again....what's happening here?? ;)

I started a new job at the end of October. I think there have been about 3 weeks of my employment here that we have NOT had snow on the ground....
