Any runners on here?
I'm getting back into shape for the race season and plan on doing a couple 5-10k's and a half marathon or 2.
What sort of times do you guys get? I did a half marathon 5 years ago with minimal training and was right at 10/min/mile. I'd like to get that under 9, and for halfs, I think that would usually get me in the top half of finishers. What are some of your experiences with running? Would a half marathon under 2 hours be respectable? What about 5 or 10k times?

The last couple of 5k's that I have done (and I agree with hating every minute!!) have taken me just under 30 minutes. Not a great time overall, but not horrible considering that I don't train much.  ;)

I thought ex-linemen were supposed to hang out at Hooters and eat wings and guzzle beer...not be running 5 and 10K's in their free time?!?!

What the heck is going on here???  Walston is ruining my image of linemen!!!  Pretty soon his high school kids will say to themselves..."that guy was a D3 lineman and look how small he is...D3 must suck!!!

Thats pretty funny dog.  Being a fomer lineman myself, eating wings and guzzling beer is what your supposed to while your in college.

Loosing the weight after college is no small task, but it has to be done.  There is no prize for weighing 300Lbs and being 35 years old.

I hope we can get off the politics and back to the IIAC soon.

31 - UD record for most points in a game.  Sol Butler vs Buena Vista (1917)  5 touchdowns, 1 extra point!!!

Ah, doolittle, now you are making me feel bad for being an over indulged Dutch fan.  That is just sad, first that 31 would be a record for most points in a game, then that the kicker would have only made one extra point out of 5 attempts.  I think I would have left this number (31) alone.   ;)  You mean Central went to 3 OT's with UD last year and UD still had less than 31 points?  Oh, man, I never realized just how spoiled we Dutch fans were.

That would be most points by 1 PLAYER in a game!!!

UD AVERAGED more than 31 points per game last season.

Oh good, I feel so much better now about being over indulged.  I can go back to being comfortable with our status now.  Boy, did I read that wrong.   ???  I wondered why you were bringing it up!   :-[ :-[  We Dutch may be good, but we aren't ALWAYS smart.   :o

I got that a lot last year after cutting a lot of weight. Some of the guys that came back from college didn't recognize me. It was a pretty nice feeling. I was a runner up to my Jr year of HS when I gained a bunch of weight and became a full-time football player. I actually enjoy it very much. The way I eat, if I didn't run, I would look like a sumo.
I run 7 days a week with the long being 7.25 (twice a week) miles right now, a 2.3 mile route, a 4 mile route, and a 1 mile "sprint"(for me, anyway) once a week. Yesterday was that and I am down to a 6:30 mile. I'd like to get down in the 5's again, but I have a feeling those days are gone.  I was up to 297 on the Super Bowl of '07, today I am in the lower 230's (put some weight on over the winter)with a goal of getting back down to 210-ish by the end of June. I very much want to set a healthy example for my kids and I was not doing that before. Its fun to have my 2-year old down on the floor with me "trying" to do pushups and situps.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Good job!!!  I got up to 200 lbs at the Super Bowl in 2007 and decided then I HAD to lose weight...I'm only 5'6"...and was able to lose 20lbs right away...but there I have stayed.  I suppose if I ran 2 miles every night instead of my fast walk that would help.  Cutting out eating convenience store food while I am out doing inspections and cutting pop out of my diet has seemed to work for taking off 20lbs but I guess to lose the final 15 that I want to lose I will have to get exercising more.  Hmm, walking mower instead of the lucky riding mower???  I don't think I could do that!!!

I am dying to hear spring football reports.  Where is Willie U???  He usually is good for inside info for UD football news!!!

Hey W-H!

Those 60lbs you lost? I've found them!

I lost 55 pounds over the past 11 months by doing the following:

Biking to work last summer, working up to doing it three or four days a week before the end of Daylight Savings Time made it impossible to continue.

Being an absolute miser over every single gram of fat in my diet. A friend of mine and both my parents were on Weight Watchers and I was aiming to consume even less fat than they were.

Watching my portion sizes. You'd be surprised how little food a grown person actually needs (at least when you have a desk job like I do). Chicken breast is relatively healthy for you, right? Still, you don't need two of them for dinner, or even one and a half ... or even a whole one!

No fast food at all, if I could avoid it. If I were out on the road covering games and had to eat in the car, it was Subway (no cheese, god no mayo), and a six-inch sandwich at that. A Whopper Jr. is 99 cents. I highly recommend the book, Eat This, Don't Eat That as a guide to what's reasonable to eat when you're out of the house.

I had started at 234 at the end of May and weighed 203 by the end of October. By the end of March I had lost the other 23 I was aiming for, despite not having my major source of exercise, by being careful over the holidays and taking up walking and/or stair climbing at work.

Don't eat your kid's leftovers, or your wife's leftovers, or snack off your wife's/girlfriend's plate when you're out to eat. Don't be afraid to take half your restaurant dinner home with you.

It requires significant lifestyle changes. You have to train yourself to not want those foods anymore.

For me, a mid-30s guy who works 15 hours a day during football and basketball season, I looked at myself in the mirror and at my three kids and realized I needed to make a significant change so I could be around for them as they went to college, got married and had their own kids.

Off the soapbox. :)

Congratulations Pat!

You covered every aspect of weight maintenance.  You can run 35 miles on the 3500 calories that in a pound of fat.

Pat Coleman

Thanks -- six weeks at 180, lowest has been 179 and highest 184. Feeling like maintenance is off to a good start.

After 18 months, you will have reset your "fat-thermostat" in your brain to your new "set weight".  Right now, your body imagines that it is in the 14th century in the middle of drought/famine.

Finicky (spelling???) children, plus inheriting my parents wanting to not waste anything, added to my general like of food has made me a big time eater of my kids left-overs.  But I do know I need to stop eating those...I just find that one hard to do.

Pat, how many days until your preseason guide comes out???  ;D

Walston ...

I'm beginning to think my user name should be ORG1941 (Old Retired Guy) instead of DBQ1965 ... since all sorts of things on here remind me of a story I want to tell.

The short version is congratulations on another running season and keep at it.  50 yars ago I was a half-miler (it was 880 yards in those days) in high school and then 800 meters in college.  I didn't break 2 minutes until my junior year in college and then it was an unofficial 1:59.1 in a trials heat indoors at U. of Chicago, won by Jim Dupree of Southern Illinois.  With early middle-age I added distance ... ran half-marathons in my 30s (finished once at 90 minutes in New Haven, Connecticut) ... in my late 40's dropped down to 10ks ... and now at age 66, 5ks are my standard ... ran 32.33 (10.42 per miles) as my best last summer.

All of this is to say ... running is great therapy .... and great for anti-aging ... even when joints and muscles protest too much ... and the endorphins are outta sight!  Two hours for a half-marathon is more than acceptable whatever one's age.  Think of it as an ex-lineman sticking it to all us running backs.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀
