Hey DBQ1965, did Kurt Pasco follow you as UD chaplain???  And did you live in the house on the corner across from Chalmers Field and Cassat Hall while your were chaplain???  Just curious.

And all this talk about the big peach in the Register is reminding me of just how far down the Registers coverage has gone over the last 20 years or so.  With how poor the coverage is these days I wouldn't think it would be worth it to get the paper.  You might as well rely on this site and others to get your sports fix.

When I left UD in 1971, no one was appointed as chaplain for several years (budget constraints).  I think the next chaplain was hired when an alum funded the position with a special gift.  We did live in the little white house on the corner of Bennett St. and McCormick.  I think that is a parking lot now.  A side note ... in the summer of 1970, a new, 2-story press box was built at Chalmers Field and early one evening (students were moving back into the dorms for the Fall term), a tornado came through the area ... lifted the press box off the stands and dumped it as a huge pile of lumber right in the middle of the football field.   As I recall, that was the only damage anywhere in that part of town.
Reality is for those who lack imagination 😀

Didn't know if anyone else was listening to Colin Cowherd on ESPN Radio this morning but he mentioned Wartburg in his story about USC's illegal athletes.  He said something like, " D3 athletes don't get paid.  When Wartburg plays Mt. Union in football this year none of their players will be getting paid."  Just thought that was interesting.

That's pretty cool.  As much as I don't like Cowherd that much, its still a good deal to have Wartburg mentioned on that big a stage.  Do you remember about what time you heard it?

Congrats to Wartburg Men + Women for winning the IIAC All-Sports trophies and the combined trophy as well.
Yes. I don't think there has ever been a more dominating spring sports season for a school in the conference.

Really?  I would have thought Wartburg had as good of or even better springs in recent years considering that Luther this year won this spring in Men's Golf and Men's Tennis.  The Wartburg Softball and Track teams had great seasons while the Knight Baseball team did a great job of putting it together once the conference season started.  Coach Holst does a very good job.

Wartburg won four conference titles this spring.  Even Luther won three last spring (Baseball, Softball, and Men's Tennis).

Like Wartburg in recent years, you could almost pick any year in the 1960s for Luther on this comparison, but in 1964 the Norse won IIAC titles in Baseball, Men's Track, Wrestling, Men's Golf, and Men's Cross Country.  The two sports that they did not win conference titles in that year were Football (won in 1960 and 1963), and Basketball (1967).  They did not have female championship sports back then or sports like soccer.

The 1980s would have also seen a bunch of years in which the Norse would have also won titles in sports like Men's Track, Baseball, Softball, Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis Men's Golf, Men's Cross Country, and Women's Cross Country (Cross Country and Women's Tennis are in the fall, but I always group them in with these other sports).  Central had very good Men's Tennis and Men's Golf teams at that time, so I don't think the Norse ever swept all of the above mentioned sports in the same year.

Last spring was more fun for me with Luther Baseball doing so well.  Congrats to the Knights on winning both the regular season and conference tourney on the diamond.

Congrats to the Knights!  Central, Luther, and everyone else are left wondering how to turn this around for yet another year.  That is the 11th straight title for the Knight men, you have to go back to the 1960s-early 70s to see that kind of athletic department dominance.

Luther was 2nd on both the men's and women's totals, but I was hoping for more from Baseball and Women's Basketball this year.  The Norse Men's Basketball program has to tremendously improve while Football and Men's Track are just not good enough.

Well FBdaddy for what its worth I did write a note to that email address regarding IIAC coverage.

I have not gotten anything back from them, nor do I expect to.  Seems kind of sad that they gave you such a brash response.

I guess they have better things to talk about like Pac Man Jones, Cedric Benson, or OJ Mayo.

Thanks for doing that. If they get enough response, they will have to respond in some way. I would think a story like Brondyke's would be worth a little of their air time. And being from Central it won't break their travel budget to go and report on it.

And I didn't get that brash of a response, but that was the gereral idea of the replys.

Does anyone else remember the days of the Register's Big Peach section? It was back in the day when the Register sent cub reporters to each of the IIAC football games every week. It's too bad that budget constraints have  upset priorities in the Newspaper Iowa Depends On.

I remember the Big Peach well.  Good coverage every Sunday morning on all of Saturday's IIAC games.  In addition, the Register always had an IIAC feature article on some piece of Conference sports (athlete, school, accomplishment, etc.) and Saturday morning also had a quick run-down on the match-ups for that Saturday's games.  Those were the proverbial "good old days."

And the Register has even gotten worse since they changed to a new style this month. They are trying to be more like USA Today have cut back on even high school sports,so the IIAC will probably get even less next year.

Does anyone else find it a little amusing (and kind of pathetic) that small college sports are pre-empted in the DMR by High School sports?? The national coverage is great, but I really miss the Big Peach's coverage of IOWA athletes...high school and small college, as well as the Big 4 (Sorry, now I'm just waxing nostalgic....)

oldNorse

The Register has essentially become a county, or at best, a central Iowa newspaper.  They don't pretend to be an all-Iowa paper and certainly not a national one.

wartburg plays mt union this year?

They hope.

So would the rest of us IIAC-ers, I think, if it means later round game as a result of a couple of playoff wins.  That means one of our own did very well again, like Central last year...except for falling one game short of a MUC-applied drubbing.

I thought the extreme weather in Central-Bethel played against Central's offensive strength, but them's the breaks...it was cold for Bethel too.

Well, when I tried to copy the email posts I sent them into cyberspace.

The short version is that there will never be any IIAC coverage because no one asks for it, so quit asking for it.

Let's clog up their inbox a little: soundoff@whotv.com

Be sure to tell them why we want the IIAC mentioned and that the IIAC extends beyond Central and Simpson. Explain that many central Iowa athletes play for all conference schools and that they deserve some mention when they do something outstanding. Let's see if we can move the needle a bit.
I'd be surprised if 15-20 emails would increase IIAC coverage on a TV show or at the DMR.  Newspapers/periodicals are dying and not in the mode of spending more money to coverage more stories.  This is why you come to the d3___ sites, correct?

Obviously, the interest among individuals on this board for more IIAC coverage is high, but a lot of the Iowa population could care less about Central golf or Wartburg softball or even IIAC football or bball.  Think about how many individuals played football in the IIAC or are parents of current/former players, how many post on this site?  Not very many.  I'm just curious, anybody who isn't an alumni of an IIAC school/parent of player/former player post on this board?  I rarely check the IIAC bball board, but it looks like it gets very little action, even during the season.

I think the only way get more coverage would be to create a blog/website dedicated to IIAC athletics.  If there is truly statewide interest in IIAC athletics, it could be documented by page views or some metric websites use to monitor traffic.  Thank goodness for Pat the crew at D3football, otherwise where would everyone on here go??????

Wartburg Fan

I remember the big peach very well. Loved getting up on Saturday and Sunday to read that section of the newspaper. You could read about  sports in every section of Iowa just about. I agree that the DSM paper is getting worst with their new design.

I just don't understand what this world is coming to. example My son now as made friends with a ex- Central football player that just started at Palmer and graudated from Central this year. I though his Mother and I raised him better then that.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Which is really crazy since I was mowing our yard with a sweatshirt on today!!!

Hey PH, you could email the Cornell SID to take some pictures of spring practice...or throw some gas money my way and I will drive down to take pictures of the Rams practice...and then blow the gas money munching on a bleu/blue cheeseburger at Chameleans  ;D ;D ;D
