36 - UD had over 100 on their roster last season...and no one wore #36!!!  Apparently the memory of Devine killing them over the years has led them to not want to issue that number  ;D

In Flander's Field
by John McCrae
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead.
Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved and now we lie,
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw,
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us, who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow,
In Flanders Fields.

School totals...

200 - Luther
152 - Central
137 - Wartburg
79 - Simpson
54 - Buena Vista
40 - Loras
35 - Dubuque
30 - Upper Iowa
27 - William Penn

Great work Doolittle!  I would have thought Simpson was a little closer to Wartburg in overall titles since they were pretty good in lots of sports in the late 1980s and into the 1990s, but they also have the longest conference losing streak in football (1950s) if I remember correctly.

Simpson's total makes what Wartburg has done the last ten years even more impressive.  The Knights have done in about 10 years what Simpson (a solid school) has done in over 80 years.
Iowa Conference Football Champions in 1932, 1935, 1938, 1941, 1954, 1957, 1960, 1963, 1970, 1971, 1978

While we're still on 35...

35 - Pass completions by Luther's Jake Nimrod against Loras in 1999
35 - PAT conversions by Norse K Kyle Wickwire in 2004 (fun offense and lots of TDs as the year went on)

Simpson has had a lot of teams that were good, but not quite the best. Same goes for Loras. Very few bad teams. Obviously that doesn't show up here. Just goes to show no one ever remembers places 2-9.

If I recall correctly, #36 would bring us to the one and only Dave Devine.

36 - The Norse record for 100-yard rushing games by Bernie Peters (1968-1971).  The Norse won two conference titles and made the Stagg Bowl during his time in Decorah.  They lost the bowl game three years before it became the Division III title game.

From 1969-72, NCAA Division III football played two regional championships, but no national final. The results of those games follow.

1970 Montclair State 7-6 Hampden-Sydney Atlantic City, N.J.

Great stuff Floyd.  I wasn't aware of this fact.  That is nice to the how D3 has progressed.

I think it was '94 or 95, somewhere in there when Coe and Cornell came over.

'98 was the first year in the conference for Coe and Cornell, so they have been in for a decade now...i'll go ahead and look up how many titles they have won.  Curiosity is getting to me.

Coe has 18 total titles...

6 - mens tennis
3 - football
2 - womens soccer
2 - womens tennis
2 - womens swimming
2 - softball
1 - mens basketball

Cornell has 1 title

1 - womens tennis

I was reading the Wartburg faculty news today and there is an announcement that the entire campus, inside and out, will go smoke-free on July 1. I didn't realize the new law applied to outside as well. Does that mean every campus will have the same thing? I've heard various Cyclone and Hawk fans talking about not being able to smoke while tailgating in the fall either.
I don't like how big brother Chester thinks businesses can't decide on their own whether to allow smoking or not, but as a non-smoker, I love the law. It was nice being in a bar for 8 hours in Illinois and not having to shower when I got back to the hotel. It will make the Wednesday night trips to Benchwarmers much more tolerable for my wife that I don't have to wake her up singing in the shower when I get home.

Living in MN now I love the no-smoking in bars.  I don't have to worry about my clothes smelling like smoke when I get home.  I still work at a bar in La Crosse, WI so whenever I go there to work or to drink in the bars, I have to remember to wear my bar jacket and bring extra clothes as I am going smell like smoke.  As a bouncer I HATE that people can smoke in bars because for some reason all the 21-22 year olds (who bitch about taking out their IDs...a whole different rant) will constantly blow smoke right in my face when they enter.  I have lots of friends who smoke who want to quite, but it's so easy to just light up when in WI...when the go to MN they smoke less cause it is a hassle.

I like no smoking in bars here in New Jersey and in NY.  I don't have to clean the nicotine stains off my bass guitar and I don't go home smelling like an ashtray.  I also have no problem with designated smoking areas outside.

I'm like many people it seems.  I like not having smoking in public places but I do have some reservations about how limited it is for people that do smoke to be able to do so.

With all the weight Walston has taken off he wouldn't be able to moonlight as a bouncer anymore like TheOne does!!!
