Happy 1000 pages, IIAC! In reading several other boards, I continue to think we have one of the best boards on Post Patterns.

To all of the posters: thanks -- you make every work day go a little faster!  ;D

I agree that this is one of the better boards. You folks actually talk about football, of all things, and you're welcoming to posters from other conferences.

In the month of May the VFW distributes Buddy Poppies.  Please take time to give a dollar and take a poppy.  The proceeds of this go to aid the Disabled Vets

There was a gent selling poppies outside Wrigley when I went to the Cubs game on Saturday.  I gave him a buck and told him to keep the flower.

Happy One Thousand to all.

I agree with the non smoking in restaurants and closed buildings.  I am not a smoker and have asthma.  I have been lucky and seem to have grown out of the attacks.  I do have two sons that suffer from asthma and you all know one of them well.  It is horrible to see your kids struggle to breathe and then have to have them breathe in smoke from a smoker.  That being said the Libertarian in my agrees with others on here that if tobacco is a legal substance then maybe they should be allowed to use it how they want or at least let businesses make that decision for myself.  I would not be surprised to see that law challanged in court though the all knowing legislature left a couple of loop holes like why would the employees and people at the Vets home be exempt and why are casinos exempt.  I would think that if the AFSCME Union wanted to they could say they are not treating all workers the same.  I would also think that some bar owner would say under the Iowa Constitution that the law breaches the equal protection clause as the casinos can still permit smoking.  I don't know if some one will take the time or money to fight it but the loop hole is there.

NJ left that loophole for the casinos but they are now trying to close it.  They are now proposing smoking areas within the casinos.  In NJ you can't even smoke in a private club/org like your own VFW hall.  Now I only smoke a cigar on a nice day when I can sit outside.

36 - Years legendary Central Coach Ron Schipper coached the Dutch.

One of the truly great men to coach at any level ever.

Agreed.  The man was every bit as great as the coach in him.  Glad he paced our sidelines and I imagine he still is, just a little higher up.

Happy 1000 IIAC!

WH...My favorite golf course would have to be River Valley out in Adel.  I like that it is out of the way and always quiet.  Also provides some challege while being open at the same time.

I will drive back to IA a couple times a summer to play that course with a couple of friends.

mayne-event:

For Burlington, I like Spirit Hollow.  Our local Muscatine contingent, that takes Waverly by storm in mid-August, does an annual "Follow the Muskies" event some Friday during football season.  We'll take Friday off and play  27 or 36 holes during the day, then take in a Muskie high school game that night.  We've played Spirit Hollow, Glynn's Creek in Bettendorf and Valley Oaks in Clinton the past few years.  Dumb move was the year we went to Dubuque, played 36 holes,  then went to Pleasant Valley for the football game.

In 2005 we were able to combine the Friday event with a Saturday trip to Waverly and a Sunday dash to Chicago.  54 holes of golf, three football games and lots of adult beverages makes for a great weekend.

Hey Walston and Warthog,
How much did you guys pay for this to be the banner ad at the bottom of the page?

To throw in my two cents on golf courses:
I like both courses in Waverly, as well as what I consider my "home course," Fillmore Fairways outside Cascade.  Timberline (south of Epworth) is another good one.  I just played Pleasant Valley in Iowa City a couple weeks back and had a good time there as well.

Wartburg Fan

I belong to a small County club where I live, but I really like to play Otter Greek  but I guess I should say I use to like to play it. I drive by  Otter everyday going to work and almost cry to see it tore up like it is. I also play Briarwood  alot with my oldest son who live in Ankeny.

Wow, someone else knows Fillmore and Timberline!!!  I get together with my frat buddies every summer at Fillmore.  They have a great deal where you can golf and then get a steak dinner on their deck.  We discovered Timberline on accident one day while trying to get to Fillmore.  Timberline is a very nice and inexpensive place to golf.  Also, in Dubuque there is Bunker Hill.  A short, but very hilly and quirky course.  And there is Lacoma in East Dubuque.  Great course and for the hackers they also have a par 3 course there.  We would often load up on beer and play the Par 3 course instead of going to classes when the weather was nice in the spring.

There were 2 new courses that opened that I never went to very much while in Dubuque that I have heard are nice...one on the Wisconsin side overlooking the Mississippi and the Meadows, I think it is called near Asbury...I think that is condsidered the home course for UD now.

Another small mention for small town 9 hole golf courses.  They often are very short courses but make up for that with small, elevated greens that make them more difficult than you would think.  2 of my favorites are La Porte City and Dysart.  Of couse, I live in between those 2 so I guess it is natural I would like them!!!

How many days until Sept. 6th???

Have you run your first race of the Spring yet ... or is that still up-coming?
