Hey Walston and Warthog,
How much did you guys pay for this to be the banner ad at the bottom of the page?

To throw in my two cents on golf courses:
I like both courses in Waverly, as well as what I consider my "home course," Fillmore Fairways outside Cascade.  Timberline (south of Epworth) is another good one.  I just played Pleasant Valley in Iowa City a couple weeks back and had a good time there as well.

Wow, someone else knows Fillmore and Timberline!!!  I get together with my frat buddies every summer at Fillmore.  They have a great deal where you can golf and then get a steak dinner on their deck.  We discovered Timberline on accident one day while trying to get to Fillmore.  Timberline is a very nice and inexpensive place to golf.  Also, in Dubuque there is Bunker Hill.  A short, but very hilly and quirky course.  And there is Lacoma in East Dubuque.  Great course and for the hackers they also have a par 3 course there.  We would often load up on beer and play the Par 3 course instead of going to classes when the weather was nice in the spring.

There were 2 new courses that opened that I never went to very much while in Dubuque that I have heard are nice...one on the Wisconsin side overlooking the Mississippi and the Meadows, I think it is called near Asbury...I think that is condsidered the home course for UD now.

Another small mention for small town 9 hole golf courses.  They often are very short courses but make up for that with small, elevated greens that make them more difficult than you would think.  2 of my favorites are La Porte City and Dysart.  Of couse, I live in between those 2 so I guess it is natural I would like them!!!

How many days until Sept. 6th???

i've played timberline a couple times, my uncle lives on the course.  it's pretty nice.  in w'loo, i like sunnyside, porky's, and gates, in that order probably, followed by byrnes (irv warren)

You have to love consistency.  Those were the two numbers for years that people did not need to look at the roster to know who they were.

Fillmore is a great little course with some huge greens that are usually pretty fast.  No sand traps either.  I've played the par 3 a Lacoma a few times, but never the actual course.  One of my roommates at Wartburg lived pretty close to The Meadows when he was growing up, and I've heard real good things about that course.

Another small town 9 holer that I enjoyed playing was Little Bear in Wyoming.  Private club, but I think they changed the rules here a year or two ago that non-members can play the golf course.  Don't quote me on that though.

Walston ...

Have you run your first race of the Spring yet ... or is that still up-coming?

July is my first 5k.
I mapped out a course and ran it earlier this week in 24:48 so I'ver got some work to do to get that competitive. I'm going to start spending a day at the track working on just speed and also try to get back in the weight room. Hopefully that will take some time off. My goal is to get the one in July in 21:00.
There is a pump 'n run in Saydel in late August that I plan on trying. You bench your body weight as many times as possible and for every rep, you take 15 seconds off your 5k time. We'll see how that goes.
I have been planning for quite a while to do the Dam to dam here in DM in late May, but my old roommate is having  his bachelor party that day on a rooftop at Wrigley and I don't like running enough to skip out on that.

Is Otter Creek Open this year? When I drove past @ Drake Relays they were tearing up old holes but I did not see flags in new holes?

Its my understanding that the new Otter Creek that just north of the old one will open up next year.

Sounds like you've got a plan!  I envy your speed over distance ... I just need to be content with not embarrassing myself in the 65-69 age group.  Keep it up ... and keep us posted.

I have attended that clinic and it was fun.  Learned a lot about kids getting Bigger, Faster, Stronger.  Tim's class was in 8th grade when ENP started that program.  I really think that is one of the reasons for that classes and his successes.  He bought into training, and the whole class did as well.  Have fun and get those kids working out.  We want to see another team from West Des Moines start getting to the finals.

BFS is a great program if you can get the kids to buy in. My experience was that the whole team was gung-ho for about two weeks then after that the romance of getting up at 6:30 to lift starts wearing off. Then all you ahe left are the truly dedicated athletes and the posers who hang out on the equipment but don't do anything. In my son's senior year he could outlift everyone in the school but an all-state lineman, and he was the quarterback.  I don't mean to sound so negative because I believe in BFS, but as the saying goes you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink.
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

Coach Wilson is a sales rep for BFS and has been for quite some time so everything we do is BFS by the book. I've seen some programs out there that have called what they do BFS, but they just use some of the lifts, not the program. Our kids have ample opportunity to lift. Room is open every morning before school and every day after and most of the kids take weightlifting class as their PE credit.
One thing that I think has helped is that every team in the school is on BFS and every athlete is either in season or out of season (seperate lifts). At this weekend's clinic, every coach for the school is required to be there.

Probably going to go watch the UNI baseball team play tonight (one of my friends from high school is an asst. coach), then I've got a wedding tomorrow.  Going to try to squeeze in some time helping a buddy run his garage sale too.
