Just a little aside, PETA chose today to protest outside of my office building. Being a farm kid, I think it's the most hilarious thing ever. http://www.kcci.com/news/16490978/detail.html

Dutchie, you should have re-created that scene from the movie PCU where they throw raw meat out the windows of the cafeteria onto a PETA-type protest.  That's a great, and highly underrated movie.

And for what its worth, I happen to be a charter member of a different branch of PETA:

funny story about Schnack- The night we tied for the conf title in '02 we of course were at Joe's to celebrate. Schnack was in there hitting on some chick so my buddies and I, whenever it was possible would work the word Schnack inot whatever song we could. OK, so it was funny to us after several brews.

This just reinforces Iowa's second class status. While New york, LA and the like get naked PETA protests, Des Moines gets "Nearly Naked" protests. I believe we should get the ACLU to sue PETA for discrimination in DC and make it a BFD!

For the former players out there.

Did you dread the hot August workouts???  Or were you so pumped for football season that you liked the practices???

liked august workouts about a trillion times as much as 2-a-days.  the lifting was never dreaded.  the running?  well you probably wouldn't be playing football if you actually liked running.  they have seperate sports for that.  but it was still better then 2-a-days.

I used to always wonder about them running sport folk...like in football if we had a lot of penalties we would run on Tuesday as punishment.  How do you punish a cross country runner for a poor performance?  Tell them they can't run?

As mush as I LOVE football! Those days in training camp when you went 9:00am to about 8:00pm. of non-stop football, between meetings, practice, training room time, etc. All summer it was like "can't wait for it to start", then it did and it's like "when will these two weeks end!!!!!"

It also didn't help you were the only people on campus for atleast one week!!! :)

And then when the soccer girls and volleyball girls came back to camus all the boys had rubber in their necks ;D

Funny -- I have a shirt that says the same thing....

Most hilarous quote I heard at the rally was "We didn't climb this far up the food chain to go back to eating rabbit food." Amen to that!

Exactly.  As comedian/actor Denis Leary says:  "Asparagus tastes like asparagus.  But meat tastes like murder and murder tastes pretty goddam good."

WEATHER UPDATE -

Main line of storms is reaching I35 and the Des Moines area about now.  Tornado warning for Polk County as radar indicates a tornado around Johnston, but no confirmed touchdown yet.  The line of storms is stretching from the Humboldt area down to the Missouri border.  Looks like this line is moving along a north-northeast track and is moving very quickly, usually between 40 and 50 mp, but as fast as 60 mph.  There's about a 70 mile gap in the storm system, but then another line of strong storms moving thru western Missouri right now.  Doesn't look like any tornado warnings in that line right now, but there have been in the past hour.

I don't think we'll see as much hail with these storms as we did last night, but the danger of tornadoes is equal or larger.  If the storms keep moving so quickly, they won't do as much damage as a slow-moving system that can just sit on top of an area for an extended time.  Also, if these storms stay on the same track as they are right now, they'll cross into Minnesota or Wisconsin instead of heading east for Illinois.  That's good news for some folks along I-80 east of Iowa City that are already dealing with some flooding.

We were taking cover here around 10. Sirens going off all around. Looks like another warning south of town that is supposed to be in Ankeny shortly after midnight. Someone should tell this storm its past my bedtime.

Yeah, tornado warning for Clarke Co. right now.  Radar indicated tornado down there, but nothing on the ground yet.  If it keeps the same path, I think the area most ripe for tornadic (I love that word) action will miss Ankeny to the east.  Indianola, Mitchellville, and Carlisle might want to be on the lookout though.

DM airport is saying they've gotten 2 inches of rain in the past 45 minutes.  I've also seen reports of 8-9 inches of rain over the road on Fleur Drive out by Army Post.  That's depth that you don't mess around with.  Report just across that there might be some serious flooding out on 63rd Street at Walnut Creek.  Water's up to 11.5 feet already and they think it'll crest around 17 by noon.  5.5 feet in 12 hours.

Well, I'm awake anyway, so I figure I ought to throw up another update.  Sirens went off here in CF about a half hour ago when we were put under a tornado watch.  Nothing came of it, thankfully.  Storms look like they've taken a more easterly track here lately and are probably 10-15 minutes from getting to Cedar Rapids/Iowa City.  Pretty strong wind reports out there, including around 60 miles per hour in the Belle Plaine neighborhood.  Couple grain bins blown down and a roof blown off a house there too.

And just as I say that a report comes across from CF police saying that there were some trees uprooted around here and some power lines knocked down.  They estimate 60 mph winds here too.

Sounds like some big time flooding is hitting the Des Moines area.  Couple minutes ago, the DM chapter of the National Weather Service issued a "Daily Rain Maximum Report."  I don't know what that means, but it doesn't sound real good.

Sounds like I'm out of the woods for now, which means I'm heading back to bed.  Everyone east of I-380 stay safe.

My parents called us about 1:30 last night to tell us the tornado sirens were going off in town and that a tornado had been spotted in Clutier and that the storm was tracking our way.  We got the kids into the basement and waited there until 2am when the warning expired...nothing much happened here.  And to our surprise and relief...our kids actually went back to sleep after we brought them back upstairs!!! So we have that going for us  ;D

Water is a big problem down here today. Its all over the place. They are now talking about 3-4 more inches over the weekend. The annual Wartburg and One Simpson Alum Great Canoe Float Down the Iowa River (WAOSAGCFDTIR for short) may have to be put on hiatus if this weather keeps up.

Well at least you don't have to worry about the river being low and having to walk some.  You can float all the way! ;D ;D ;D ;D

You can come to Waverly and float from the rugby field (by McDonalds) past Hertle Field, see fb practice fields, behind the Manors and thru town to the river.  ;D
