Francis DeReus, a referee in the Iowa Wesleyan vs. Dubuque game, stopped play when the Dubuque coach Moco Mercer became too profane. The official final score was Iowa Wesleyan 1, Dubuque 0.

You've got to wonder just what passed for "too profane" back in 1952.

Central? In the article, he said he is looking for a team with a "championship culture," right? ;)

Central Michigan is trying to build a "championship culture" ... at least in football.  It started a few years go with Head Coach Brian Kelly (who moved on to Cincinnati) and now with Coach Butch Jones.  There is excitement and enthusiasm both in the program and also on campus.  Granted ... Central Michigan plays in the MAC ... but at least they are putting for effort to produce a quality program.

Still ... I would rather see Nick Brautigan in Spartan blue and white rather than Chippewa maroon and gold.

Just to tie everything in together here.  spurrier on this board, played football at UD, and has a son that will be playing for Brian Kelly at Cincinnati next season.  Also, Orlando Walton, who plays safety for UD started his career at Central Michigan!!!

Wow, just saw the new Spartan Scoreboard or should I say jumbo-tron! I must say I haven't seen one this nice at this level ever. Not that there aren't any out there but I just haven't seen one.......

The stadium is also coming along nicely. It appears the rain hasn't slowed construction. Not sure when the field turf goes in but I wouldn't want to be the guys digging out the old field (mud).

Does size matter when it comes to scoring?  Now I am going to suffer from score board envy.

Since this board has become part football part weather, here's the news in Waverly. Flooding expected 4" higher than 1999. So mark us down for 3-100 yr floods in 15yrs. The GREEN Bridge closed @ 6pm. Most store fronts downtown are sandbagged. 1st St NW closed from Bremer to 5th Ave. (St. Pauls, Kohlmann Park). Water from the river is starting to back up into the dry run. The Red Cross setting up shelter @ the W.

I imagine that is a similar story to a lot of river towns right now. Water giveth, and water taketh away. Hopefully everyone takes it seriously and doesn't try anything stupid.

And to further tie things together on this board, Wartburg ass't Jeff Beck was a GA at Grand Valley State when BK was there. Also, former Wartburg DC Matt Mitchell is a coach at GVSU and came in I believe when BK was there. Former Wartburg student coach Kevin Kehe was a GA at GVSU under BK as well when they won a national title. After a year, he got a job as the DC at Millikin and beat Wartburg in his second year. He is now studying to be a lawyer at UI.
There is some connection of Rick Willis and either BK or one of the other coaches at GVSU.

Waverly Update.
3rd AV NW water is to 5th St. 3 blocks East of campus -mostly uphill so East side of campus should be good. Manors may get some from dry( ???)run backup.

Also
WAVERLY --- Flood evacuations are beginning in Waverly, according to the Bremer County Emergency Operations Center.

Residents in the flood plain are encouraged to secure their homes and be prepared to vacate the area Monday and Tuesday. Officials anticipate that major portions of the city prone to flooding were to be closed to public beginning Monday night.

Shelter updateThe Red Cross will offer shelter at The W, an athletic center on the Wartburg College campus and also at the West Gym at the University of Northern Iowa. Individuals needing assistance to evacuate should call (319) 352-4252.

AEN...Thanks for the updates.  I wish everyone well and hope that the flooding is kept to a minimum.

I talked with my parrents tonight, seems as though things are going to get stickier in DM as well.  Their acerage is saturated and their house was hit by lightning in one of the recent storms.  Outlets were blown out, switches were ruined, and the computer was burned up.  It was hooked to a surge protector as well!

A tornado came through the SW burbs of the windy city Saturday afternoon.  I knocked down some vital power lines, and runied large towers that carry a lot of juice to these people.  Sections of Interstate 57 are shut down until the lines can be lifted and fixed.  The issues lies with the tension that is on these lines and worry of a chain reaction once the lines are cut.  To anyone how framilar with the city, I57 is a main artery for the SW burbs into the city for the commuters.  It is causing quite a mess in the mornings.  If anyone is planning on making a trip to Chicago allow extra time for travel.  All of the major expressways are under heavy construction.  Its making my life a living hell right now!

I drove up to Waverly this evening to see just how high the water is and I have never seen a river that far out of its banks in my life.  As AEN said, there are spots where the water extendes five blocks off of the river, with even more water on the way.

The Green Bridge and the pedestrian walking bridge were both already closed when I was in town.  The Ped Bridge surprises me the most, since that always seemed so much higher than the water when we would walk across it on the way home from the bar in college.  Sounds like the Bremer Ave. bridge will be closed later tonight, essentially dividing Waverly in two.

I hope everyone comes out of this OK and gives due respect to whatever warnings and evacuation orders city and county officials send their way.  I have absolutely zero sympathy for some of these idiots you see on TV talking about how they stuck around even though they were told to evacuate and now they're (quite literally) up sh!t creek.  "Wull, we didn't think it were gonna git as bad as it did.  Derrr."

The Cedar is also pretty high here in CF.  I know some of the Main Street bars have shut down for the night and likely for tomorrow too.  I don't know if the water will get high enough to spill over First Street, but it sure wouldn't surprise me.  My place should still be fine, though.  I now think that my apartment will never flood...if the water gets high enough, the building will just snap off the foundation and float away!

Took some pictures while in Waverly tonight.  You can see them at:  http://s23.photobucket.com/albums/b361/jessegavin/Flood%202008/.  I took these with my cell phone camera, so the quality isn't outstanding.  But I think you can get a pretty good idea of the water levels.
