Just another example of how people pu;; together dring tough times. Football mom got a call this afternoon from the owners of the storage (the one behing Burger King) where we have footballkid's furniture stored that flooding was expected and that they would stay open all night to allow everyone to get their things out before the flooding. Most places would just let you find out when you came back for your stuff and found it ruined. He took a friend up in our van and got his stuff out tonight. Maybe it was good karma since he spent yesterday afternoon shoveling sand into sandbags to repel the flooding we have here.

EARLY REPORT....from the bedroom window.
The river is higher than '99 that was worse than '93 in Waverly.

Off to take some photos and see if help is needed or if that will wait until river goes down

I drove up to Waverly this evening to see just how high the water is and I have never seen a river that far out of its banks in my life.  As AEN said, there are spots where the water extendes five blocks off of the river, with even more water on the way.

The Green Bridge and the pedestrian walking bridge were both already closed when I was in town.  The Ped Bridge surprises me the most, since that always seemed so much higher than the water when we would walk across it on the way home from the bar in college.  Sounds like the Bremer Ave. bridge will be closed later tonight, essentially dividing Waverly in two.

The reason the ped/bike trail bridge by Nestle Plant (Carnation for us old folks) is closed is because the water is hitting the bottom of the bridge.

The road north of the river bridge by Elect. Company is closed, the road most runners take along NE side of river is closed.

The national guard is on duty @ the corner of Bremer + 8th Street. And probably other places in town too.

WEST SIDE of WAVERLY Report
South of Bremer the water's edge is @ 8th Street. City pool, fairgrounds #1+2 fairways at city golf course UNDER water.
North of Bremer Ave. The water is in the intersection of 8th St + 5th Ave. The Knights Village lot is 1/2 full. Lohe + Grossmann basements still dry.

I send more info when I know more.

Are there sports camps going on this week?
When is the river expected to crest?
Did you guys get more rain last night?
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Pat Coleman

Stay safe, folks -- I read this board a couple times a day and the updates are kind of sobering.

Just a brief passing rain 5-10 minutes.

Water is in the Manors + Centennial ground floors.

OF course summer school classes are not officially canceled. Unless the prof can not make it here.  ;)

DAMAGES TO CAMPUS
As of this evening the damage to the college does not appear to be extensive, thanks to sandbagging efforts. About a foot of water flooded into the Regents Center racquetball courts, and one corner of the North Gym was wet but not under water. Most of the grounds on lower campus have been covered by flood water more than 48 hours, so there will likely be considerable kill of grass, shrubs and trees. There will also be damage to athletic field facilities: baseball and softball dugouts, scoreboard, fencing, etc.

Several campus tunnels have had various levels of flooding. Electrical service to several buildings has been disrupted. Diane Tacke arranged for a mobile electrical generator to be transported to campus to restore power.

Because power was out in the lower levels of Dahl Centennial Union, she ordered a refrigerated truck onto campus to store all food that was in Food Service coolers. These actions, and others by many Luther staff people, have probably saved the college significant financial loss.

The college will not begin detailed assessment of damages until the immediate threat has passed and we have all employees back at work.

I'm wondering if Coe and Cornell have to deal with water as well? I think all other IIAC schools would be fine.

Somebody with more knowledge of Mount Vernon can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's any river that runs through town.  Although I'm sure Palisades State Park between MV and Cedar Rapids is probably mostly underwater right now.

The river would have to get awfully high in CR for Coe to be affected.  The campus is set off from the Cedar by a pretty good ways, and when CR has flooding issues, it seems to typically hit the western and southwestern sides of town harder than the downtown area.

89.1 - Did your folks get nailed w/rain yesterday or did it stay south of IA-MN boarder?

For those not aware the road going from LC campus to downtown Decorah has water in front of Subway + P.Ranch. They got 7+" Sunday

Talked to the folks on Sunday.  They are dry, although our house is kind of up on a hill so we really never flood.  However, the softball field and tractor pull "fairgrounds" in Mabel are completely underwater.  One big lake.  The local golf course is underwater.  My parents lucked out, unfortunately NA alum Buddha's folks did not.  I spent part of Sunday looking for a pump for their basement in SG.  Six inches of water for them, luckily the recording equipment was off the ground.

I agree with SK those 2 campus would be effected by the "flash flood" not a river flood.

I hope everyone comes out of this OK and gives due respect to whatever warnings and evacuation orders city and county officials send their way.  I have absolutely zero sympathy for some of these idiots you see on TV talking about how they stuck around even though they were told to evacuate and now they're (quite literally) up sh!t creek.  "Wull, we didn't think it were gonna git as bad as it did.  Derrr."

Breaking out the MN talk again, SK?

Saw a news report of a little town on the MN/IA border that was wiped away by flooding.  Dorchester, IA population 100 was hit hard with 9-10 inches of rain on Saturday/Sunday.  Sure enough, once the reporter said "The entire community suffered flood damage, but the Dorchester Trailer Court was the  hardest hit." you just knew what the next interview person was going to look like.  And yes, he had more fingers than teeth.

How about a little football talk to think about while sandbagging?

It seems that Coach Lewis has taken a position at St. Cloud State. This means that Coach Detwiler will become defensive coordinator. To help the defense, Coach Koehler has asked Willis to come back as a defensive assistant. Koehler is also giving up day-to-day control of the offense, although he will still have overall responsibility. How's that for an off-season shake-up in Waverly?
