I just got back from a weekend in DM.  The detour was pretty interesting.  I spent most of the day on Friday helping Mrs. Klops family sand bag the family business.  They are right down by Principal Park, and they were affraid the levee was going to fail and flood them out again.  Good news for them was that it did not, bad news is the levee by DM North failed.  What a disaster.  Many devistated folks.

I think someone mentioned that CR might be without power for a month.  Mrs. Klops dad got a phone call from Alliant Energy to haul a transformer from Boone to CR.  I guess they were in the process of doing that, so I hope that speeds up the process.  The transformer weighs 250,000 lbs.  I had no idea that a transformer could weigh that much.

Happy Fathers day to all, and I hope everyone being affected by the floods is doing as well as they can.

i drove by that transformer on Hwy 20 on the way home from Des Moines this weekend... that thing was HUGE.  they had it traveling on a flatbed trailor.  news reports the water is going down 2 inches an hour, hopefully the rain will hold off, and hopefully cedar rapids won't run out of water, which is being predicted could happen in a couple (2) days if people don't stop using so much.

I would say thats a testimate to how well the water treatment facility in CR works.  To go through all of this and still have water is amazing.

Sounds like things are heating up a bit over there as well.  I read an article in the DM Reg. this morning about angry people trying to get back into their homes and time it took.  There was a rather interesting article from the president of the Highland Park HOA in DM.  Their levee broke while downtown DM was spared.  Sounds like they were set to get levee improvements, but nothing happened until it was to late.  The article made it sound as though all parties were concerned with downtown DM over anywhere else.  With any majoy tragedy the emotions run high.  I just hope everyone did everything they could before the water hit.

So, a few weeks ago there were some kind posters on here who gave me a skunk odor cure for my dog that got into a fight with a skunk.

That would bring me to my next question.  Does anyone on here know how to break a dog of getting into fights with skunks???  Because tonight would be round 2 that Millie the wonder dog has lost to said skunk!!!

The solution would be a skunk free fence in your back yard.

Doolittle,

My two dogs had a run-in in our back yard with a skunk over a year ago and I know your pain.  The only way we get around that when the dogs need to go out in the middle of the night is for WC11 to go out in the backyard first and do a quick "skunk check" before letting my knuckleheads loose.

It's a bit of a pain but it did pay off about 3 months ago when WC11 flicked on our light to our back yard and a big boy skunk was about 3 feet away from the window.

Skunks may 'stink' but I'd rather deal with them than having my dogs run into a raccoon.

Of the 3 of us that have graduated, none of us even have pets. Had a dog for a little while, but we gave him to my parents when our little girl was born.
The one in Jr High actually takes care of his pet dog, so I suppose there is a possibility of a career in Veterinary medicine when all the schooling is done. I wouldn't hold my breath at this point though.

So with all those brothers.  Are any of them joining the family business your parents have going???

The best solution would probably be a 12 gauge...if you live in town, that's a bit tricky! :D

A box trap would also do, but I wouldn't want to be the one carrying it away, unless of course there was a .22 involved at a distance a couple days prior...

I feel your pain with the skunk issue. We've had it here, too, but like Wildcat 11 says, that's better than a raccoon.

The Show has the best skunk remedy. Our yard is fenced, but one still got back here, sprayed one of our dogs and left.

Who's going to hear one quick shot in town, or know where it came from?

We live in the country...so a yard fence is out.  But a shot gun blast or two would probably work.  The thing is, Millie went off into the field to find the skunk...so THAT is the problem.  I can't really blame the skunk for doing what it did!!!

Are we under 80 days until Sept. 6th???

Edit: I guess not...I looked up the Central website and we are 81 days, 22 hours and some odd minutes from kickoff!!!

Just checking to see if anyone is out there.  Pretty dead on here for the past day or so now.  Is everyone okay?

Okay here ... just thankful I'm not having to deal with all the stuff going on in Iowa with clean up from tornados and floods.  I spent the morning painting our upper deck and will do the lower deck this afternoon.  That's not work I particularly relish ... but it sure is better than having to sort, throw away and clean up the aftermath of a flooded home or a destroyed community.

Today is our youngest's 30th birthday ... where did the time go?

Happy Birthday to the youngest,  I know that feeling.  The oldest turner 29 this May and after this last Sunday spent at Adventureland with the grandkids chasing them around lifting them on to the rides and riding a few of them it took yesterday to recover.  Where did the days go that you could do that all day and be ready the next day for a repeat.

I still die laughing when I think of my All Orange County Db high school friend who moved up north to Crook Point on the southern Oregon coast. He had a small, slat shanty with his wife and two little girls on one of heads there.
I laugh because city boy shot a skunk that scared his wife IN THE KITCHEN.
Shanty was instantly unlivable.

I go 10 years of playing football and never have one single trouble with my hamstrings.  Last summer, I pull a hammie playing beer league old man softball.  Did it again this year....how depressing.

Our oldest one will be in 1st grade this fall with our 2nd one starting kindergarten at that time.  And WE are already saying to ourselves "where did the time go???"

As far as the aches and pains of getting older.  I can hardly wait until my 2 year old son is old enough to start riding the lucky mower and relieving me of some of my chores!!!
