i can't believe it's almost the 4th of July... as a player, that always ment summer was pretty much over.
camp is just around the corner, a little over a month away.

The 4th of July was when I always questioned why I was still doing this to my body!  But once I got back on campus it was well worth it.

i agree, it was usually the time we started getting really serious about conditioning.

In the old days I agree with you but I think these players are working hard all summer long and are ready sooner

i will both agree and disagree.
kids are working all summer and spring on weightlifting and foot work and speed drills, which gets them in shape... i would also venture that most don't start sprinting (getting in good shape) until after the 4th.  it is hard to keep your body in top shape year round without getting burnt out.  i'm not saying that they take the entire 2 months of summer off prior, but i bet kids are in better shape come late mid/late july then early june.

I would disagree with that.  I think the top teams are keeping and staying in top condition year around now.  At least the kids that are playing and starting.  I don't think for two years after Tim was the starter that he got out of shape.  He worked out and lifted every week.  He was even running those weeks not just lifting.  Walston I think can tell the stats but if you miss one week I believe they said you fall two to three weeks behind where you were physically.  Cocah Anderson keeps those boys in great shape and he is one of the reasons the Dutch have been winning so much lately.  I understand that mind set of this time of year but I think that that mind set is a bit out of date.

Though I think you have some merit in what you are saying.  I do not think that you can train like a madman 365 days a year without getting burned out.  Kids needs the down time.  That does not mean that you go lay on the couch and eat twinkies and watch the latest episodes of Maury Povich for 3 weeks.  That would put you behind the curve.  Football camp is grueling and the season is a grind as well.

I never remember being a part of any training program where you were not given time away or the intensity level wasnt knocked down.  Even our summer running programs progressed in intensity as the summer grew on.

It will be interesting to hear what DF2K4's son has to say about the workouts, practices and work ethic out in Redlands compared to Central.

i am relativly new to the "real world", so i can some what attest to work out regimes today.  like i said, we didnt take any week off.  we would be doing change of direction drills, foot work drills, quickness drills, and conditioning drills all summer long.  things just picked up a lot more after the 4th, becuase that's when it really kicked in that "oh crap, we have camp in a month".

All I can say about footballkid's summer routine is that he hasn't exactly followed the workout plan so far this summer. His city job has had him cleaning up flood damage for the last two weeks which has included picking up, cleaning and relaying outdoor tennis court surfaces, removing debris from fences and closed areas, and last but not least, emptying sandbags and piling the sand in one area for cleanup. In other words, he's on the farm boy work out program. He's been doing some workouts, but basicly it's eight hours of physical labor a day. As things get back to normal, he'll start back on the workout plan, but right now he looks better than he ever has.

Question for the Board:

If my son (9th grader) was re-roofing a house in Parkersburg to fix some tornado damage.  Is that similar to signing a letter of intent to W?

Walston Hoover - any wedding stories?  Glad to see a Knight marrying up and finding a Central grad to improve bloodlines.
