Klopenhiemers 2008 Buena Vista Football Outlook
(Beaver Fans feel free to elaborate)

2007 Record:  5-5          Projected 2008 Record:  6-4

Season Outlook:  Things are looking up in Storm Lake for the 2008 football season.  Last season the Beaves finished 5-5 and gained some valuable experience for the upcoming season.  The Beavers will not be playing Bethel this year and have replaced them on the schedule with University of Wisconsin-Platville.  It will be very important for the Beavers to make a strong showing in their opening game as the start conference play two weeks later.  Buena Vista will once again enjoy the off after their off week after the first game of the season.  This will provide a valuable learning week to further mesh as a team.  The hopes and dreams of this season will be reliant on young talent stepping up and taking a leadership role within the team.  Buena Vista will also welcome a very strong recruiting class, which could lead to some fresh faces on the field this upcoming season.  Look for some of these kids to make an impact early!

Offensive Outlook:  The Beavers will replace the starting QB and many O-lineman but do have some bright spots on this side the ball.  Corey Donscheski will be a sophmore and should see the majority of the carries at the RB position.  He is an exciting young player and could make some waves in the conference.  At the QB postion there are a couple front runners such as Brandon Phelan and senior to be Matt Peary.  Both are very capable athelets and should work well within the system.  The offensive line returns two players who have seen a lot of playing time in Matt Schill and Rickey Lueders.  The hopes and dreams of this offense will rely on the play of the offense line.  With a new QB under center, it will be very important for the Beavers to establish a running game.  This could take some pressure on the young gun and eat up the clock.  Another main emphasis for the Beavers will be ball controll and sustaining drives.  If the offense can keep the ball for long periods of time, it will lead to success in the win column.  The BV receiving corps is not bone dry either.  Trent Svendsen will return and has seen playing time in the previous 3 years.  They will look for young players to step up and compete for the other remaining receiving postions.

Deffensive Outlook:  The deffense could be one of BV's biggest strenghts this upcoming season even with the loss of Cody Pierce, Mike Amick, David Bredehoeft, and others.  Mike Sly SS, Rhan Franklin CB, Chris Dirx LB, Todd Schwartz LB, Ben Chukuske DL, and Austin Dicksinson DL all return.  The biggest point of emphasis for the Beavers this season has to be putting pressure on the QB and getting into 3 and long situations.  The Beavers have had the tendency to see a lot of snaps on the deffensive side of the ball the past few seasons.  If they can enable the offense to handle the ball more good things will happen.  Look for the leadership to come from secondary, as they should be a force conference wide.

Buean Vista will be good if:  They will have a good season if the o-line can mesh together and open up holes for the young Donscheski.  If the deffense can get the ball back, create turn overs, and put pressure on the QB you will see good things in Storm Lake.  A lot rides on the new signal caller as well.

Buena Vista will stuggle if:  The Beavers will struggle of the o-line does not come together as a unit and the defense can not get team into 3 and long situations.  The Beavers need the upper classman to step up and take a leadership role as well.  If there is no direction and nobody to feed off of look for a tough season in Storm Lake.

Overall the feeling good and we are all looking forward to seeing the Beavers hit the ground running against UW-Platville.

I make my players run if they refer to anything I teach them as a chop block.
A chop block is highly illegal and very dangerous and involves a blocker blocking someone below the waist while they are engaged with someone above the waist. Also referred to as a high/low.
Cut blocks however are very legal and is the best way for a slower OL to even the playing field against a faster DL and LB, but especially DB's. I teach cut blocks and want them to be used as often as possible, however we are restricted in HS as to when they can be utilized. It has to be at the snap and within the tackles.
If it was 2004 and you are talking someone as big as a house, it was most likely Andy Heitmann. about 6'6 and claimed 380. If he was 380, I was 200.

Yes it was Heitmann and for his sake, I hope he is on a weight managment program since leaving Wartburg.  That is not a cheap shot at all.  He is just one big human.

Dude was just plain massive.  He might have even had his own gravitational pull.  And one of the funniest guys you'll ever meet.  I'll never forget covering the Wartburg media day when I was interning at KCRG.  I was running the camera and Scott Saville was interviewing Heitman and asked him how he got so big.  Heitman just looks at him, shrugs his shoulders a bit and says "Uh, I guess I ate well."  It took everything I had to not bust out laughing.

Chop blocks are nothing to mess with.  I got hit with one my sophomore year in high school against Anamosa.  I was playing DE and the tackle I was going against took a step or two back like he was going to pass block and we both got our hands on each other around the shoulder pads when all of a sudden he takes another step back and launches himself at my left knee.  Luckily he hit me from the outside in and I only strained the ligaments.  Our trainer told me that if he hit me from the inside out, it probably would have blown out my knee.

Actually, I can't remember a whole lot of player critiques on here...at least not negative.

Sukow & Yordi took some flack

Never for the on field stuff did they take flack, none that I can remember any way.

agreed.  they took none for on the field stuff.  everything the got, they deserved.

Good to see the bitter train isn't completely empty yet.

by no means am i still bitter.  yordi brought everything upon himself.  even though i know that goes on (i do it as well) to yell it during that week, outside your dorm window is just plain childish.
as for suckow, i have no thoughts about that anymore, the kid made his choice.  i was just simply responding to someone saying suckow and yordi were deliberatly talked about on this board for things they did off the field.  with the choices they made, and how public they both were, they deserved every remark about them.  let sleeping dogs lie.
other then a few comments here and there (which are always in jest) i dont even think of it anymore

Not to pick on you Walston but blocking the LB below the waist in HS football is illegal if the LB starts outside the free blocking zone.  If the Olineman cuts him and he is not within a yard of the line then that is a chop block by definition.  :D
