Rams fans are coming out of the closet. Must be a sign for something special in 2008, time will tell! Thanks for the welcome Rams fans.

ShowMe, we should probably explain that after you have 200 posts you are able to give other posters + or - karma.  That is the +k people are talking about.  That drove me crazy when I first started on here trying to figure out what exactly that was.  So would ShowMe happen to be from Missouri???  Which technically is my home state, though I really think of Iowa as my home state!!!

Klopenheimer,  what were the recruiting numbers for BV this year.  That has been a concern of mine recently regarding the Beavers.  They may have been getting decent recruits but if their numbers kept being down in the 25 range for very long I would think that would start hurting them.

And regarding Loras, some people on here are claiming they could be the break out team in the conference this year.  Is there something they know of that I don't about Loras???  It has seemed to me they are on a downward spiral football wise anyway.  Basketball for the Duhawks is another matter though!!!

Any word on how Airborne Dutch is doing?  Is he on deployment?

Anyone, anyone?  Bueller...Bueller?

I've been thinking about him for a few weeks and his lack of posting.  I've been hoping it's a combination of it being the offseason and also him being busy with work.  I've been too scared to ask though.  I haven't wanted to jinx anything.  Hope all is well.

I am hearing that they should bring at least 40 to camp this year.  From what I have heard at wedding this summer, it sounds as though their are some very good recruits coming in as well.  I will ask for BOY and Show to elaborate on that as well.  They are little closer to Storm Lake than I am.

A.D. hire speaks volumes

July 7, 2008
(release courtesy of Jon Denham, Loras College sports information director)

DUBUQUE, IOWA . . . Loras College President James Collins '84 announced to the institution Monday the hiring of Brad Soderberg as Interim Director of Athletics beginning July 8, 2008. Brad is a former head men's basketball coach at Loras from 1987-1993 where he amassed a 79-45 record in five seasons in his first head coaching position.

Soderberg's most recent position was as head men's basketball coach at Saint Louis University in Saint Louis, Missouri, where he went 80-74 from 2002-2007. He also had successful stops at the University of Wisconsin and South Dakota State University. As a head coach, the Wisconsin native had winning records at each institution and boasted a 100% graduation rate.

Dbq65,
I guess you can mark me down as a WB homer.

This is my opinion, but I think cut blocks are weak. I know it's a little different when you're standing 2' from someone in the trenches, and I know  they're great for the 3 step drop.

speaking from a DB point of view,  I think people (especially outside the line of scrimmage )who attempt  to cut block are just really  soft.    Honestly, players would be more effective taking someone head up and at least getting in their way. A majority that I've witnessed are terrible at getting to your legs and having any kind of effect.  This is referring to more of a downfield block out in space by the way.

The classic example is when the play is basically over and you've started to gear down and someone  would try diving at the back of your legs.  That was always my favorite.

LCNorse

Well cutting someone from behind should never happen on a football field, a legal cut block can be a very effective way of blocking. It not only can take a player out of the play but for the rest of the game you can be in that defenders head. One of my favorite rule changes from high school to college was the ability for WR to utilize this block. I know as an undersized WR I used it as much as I could. I found it to be a very good mental tool to use throughout a game. By no means to I ever believe that you should do it to intentionally hurt someone, but from someone playing out on the edge it was always much easier to cut someone then to try and block a defensive back in space...just my opinion.

2007 Record  12-1  (10-0 Regular season 2-1 playoffs.)  2008 Prediction  9-2

Seson Outlook

The need to replace two IIAC MVP players is a huge task for the Dutch.  Two players in Vance Schuring two time MVP and Tim Connell 2007 MVP will be sorely missed.  The one two punch of Dustin Veldhuizen and Zachary Taylor should provide the Dutch with a good running game as they filled in for Vance last year when he missed approximately 4 games with leg injuries.  Zach Bandow backed up Tim last year as did Jared Lackey.  Both will be in the hunt to Replace Tim at QB.  Snead, (don't know the first name) a transfer from Drake and graduate of Southeast Polk High is also rumored to be in the contest to Replace Tim.  The key will be to get the QB spot secured by one of these three men.  This is not unlike three years ago when Tim stepped in and filled the shoes of a 4 year starter after limited action his freshman year in a backup roll.  The strength of the returning Dutch offense will be in the line.  While the Dutch lose a 4 year starter in Jon Haugen they have two tight ends back with a load of experience.  The end positions for the Dutch are kind of by committee.  Jacob Nero and Jordan Lueschen will be back.  Both big men with good hands.  The Interior of the line should be a strong point for the Dutch as the have 5 returning letter winners back anchored by 1st team all IIAC Spencer Remick.  Owen Haberman and Remick are three year letter winners for the Dutch.  Another gap that needs to be filled is the loss of two 1st team all IIAC recievers in Josh Smith and Cody Huisman.  Cam Waugh and Matt VerMeer should be the guys that see a majority of time but there were several JV kids that looked good and may get some PT.

Defensively the need to replace an all IIAC performer in Andrew Lehn and Greg Altmeir.  These two linebackers were great and will be hard to replace.  Jeremy Swafford and Greg Best both filled in last year will have to step it up this year.  Mulder will be missed on the dline and the loss of Dustyn Baethke, Guy Dierx, and Brett Doud in the secondary will be missed as well.  Chad Eisenman, Cody Baethke have had plenty of PT and should help out with their absence.

The Dutch could be good if the QB develops quickly enough to be a threat to run and throw with enough effectiveness to keep teams guessing.  The offensive line has to help the running game be more effective as the experience of the senior at QB is not there this year.  The Dutch can also be good if the defense comes alive and keeps the other team out of the endzone.  The Dutch may be able to use special teams to keep them in close games.  Both the FG kicker and All IIAC punter Curtis Brondyke return.  The Dutch might be able to make teams march a long field and then kick some long FG's to win some games.

The Dutch will struggle if the offense is not balanced and does not keep the ball and drive it.  If the Dutch due to underclassmen turn the ball over and let opponents have short fields could spell trouble.

With all the losses the Dutch have this year the cupboard is not entirely empty.  If young players step up and develop there is no reason that the Dutch can not make it back to the playoffs this year.  Having Wartburg at home can help them and it is after a bye week that will give them an extra week to prepare for the Knights.  The Dutch always play tough at home.  Wartburg will have one more game under their belts but it is also one more game to get through without injuries.

Does Cornell still do the one course at a time study? I would think that would cater to a unique type of student. Not everyone would excel in that environment -- I wouldn't. (I never considered Cornell for that reason. I had some really good friends that went there and loved it.) I've always thought of Cornell as more academically riggorous school. It's cool that it takes a different approach, but I wonder if this doesn't affect recruiting practices....

From an athletic participant standpoint, how could you not love One-Course-At-A-Time?  One set of books to travel with, one train of thought to keep in the midst of a season instead of juggling 3-4 classes and the sport.

True, you must be able to absorb a lot of information in a short period of time...but...isn't that the game of football when from one week to the next you need to prepare for the wide open attack of one team to the ground attack of the next week...or a 3-4 defense to a 5-2?

When I played (back when men were men and sheep were nervous) I had 4-5 classes and/or a lab during the season on the Quarter, not Semester, system.  Talk about the worst of everything.   :o

Midterms every three weeks, finals after 10 weeks.   >:(

To say nothing of that fact that I had to walk to school uphill both ways, in a driving blizzard, through 3 feet of snow, during 100 degree heatwaves.   ;)
