I'm curious about peoples thought.  What first year head coach will have the best season?
I am going with Simpson's new coach.  They have done a good job of recruiting against Central this year.

E.  Motivation:  I may be wrong but I think Cornell players get up more for Coe than Coe players get up for Cornell...e.g. last year.

Couple of ways to look at this one.  Coe has won 8-straight against Cornell.  Hard to get up for a rivalry when it's such one-sided.

Another thing, this game has been played the last game of the year.  Two years ago, Coe was coming off back-to-back losses to Central and Wartburg, eliminating them for the Playoffs.  Then they had to play Cornell, and I'm not sure anyone on the field cared about that game other than Ashton Northern.

With this being the conference opener for both teams, you will see a Coe team that is much more into the game than in years past, at least I would hope so anyway.

Disagree... Coe did come off 2 straight tough loses.  they were mathematically out of the playoffs but:
1) Didnt want to be the 1st team to lose to Cornell in awhile
2) Seniors didnt want to go out on a loss
3) Felt that they underachieved tremedously, didnt want another loss. (almost embarressed)

I believe before Coes 8 game win streak Cornell had a 6 game win streak vs the kohawks themselves. Lets just hope the coe streak stops this year.

I would tend to agree that the Cornell players get up for the Coe game a lot more than the Coe players....this rivalry definitely needs some spicing up.

I'm going with Simpson on this one. With the talent they are recruiting, it would be a waste if they weren't at least competitive again.  ;)

I really hope Simpson works the bugs out by the last game of the season -- that'll make Central's win even sweeter.  :-* (Sorry, but a jab at Simpson every now and then makes the world seem right....balance has been restored.)

Not much love for Luther going on the board much these days...I kinda like everyone not expecting anything out of the Norse this year. It seems in the past years when there was some expectations we just fell on our face, so hopefully things can be a little different this year. From the sounds of it we have a pretty good class coming in...I still think that our defense has the potential to be one of the best in the conference. We will just have to wait and see...

While you guys are on the topic of Cornell making a move this season, is their any hope for Loras to do the same?  Or will they be taking over for the Rams this year at the bottom of the IIAC?

We have a new quarterback, McGrew and Davis in the backfield, Coach O taking over the OC position, and what looks to be another decent defense.

I'm not going to pretend I know much at this point about what the Duhawks have coming into the season but I figured this would be the place to find out.  I hope we'll have something worth looking at this fall other than the purple track and nice scenery...

loras will finish 2nd.... to last in the conference this year just ahead of Cornell and just behind BV or Simpson

Yep, Cornell had a 5 game winning streak from 1995-1999 against Coe.

Good news for Cornell, i hope it's true and I hope we can improve our record from 2-8 to 8-2 in 08. We will need more seats. A good season will help move the plan from 2 to 3 years to less than 2 years. I'm the optimist, time will tell!

Oh, before the fans from the other IIAC schools get worked up over who will can beat, let me say I'll tell you after we win  :)

Just pick the 8 you want to beat as 8-2 is a heck of a turnaround . But if you don't dream big you won't get there ;) ;) ;)

Grinnell
Carleton (Minn.)
Coe
Wartburg
Loras
Simpson
Univ. of Dubuque
Central
Luther
Buena Vista

oh thats 10 isn't it? I'll take it, mark it!
The turnaround has to start at some point, who knows where the run ends?

When will the playoff run end?  In the Stagg against MUC or are they doomed to miserable suffering in the hail storm of the Cornell Resurgence (tm) as well?

;)

(I'm actually hoping for a bit of a Cornell surge this year - I figure the fireworks of your support will be surpassed by no one else in the West.  Should be good viewing.)

Since my confidence in Cornell's performance the last couple of years fail to meet my dreams for the program, I will enjoy my hopes and dreams before the seasons start and let time tell the story. But should time paint my dream, I would hope that my fellow bloggers give Cornell some credit. And, don't be surprised if the dream comes true too because you heard it here first.

Where to start.  I think your name says it all for me.  Showme.  The Rams need to show the IIAC before we start believing.  I too love your optimism.  If you can not be that way before the season starts there is something wrong.  As I said it last year to Purple Heys Cornell has to get the first IIAC win and then we can talk about more.  I think the team has improved over the last three years.  I just don't know how much.  I hope they can get out of the 0fer syndrome in the IIAC will strengthen the conference.  I just hope you have not set yourself up for a huge fall.  Looking at the start of the conference schedule if you can go 2-0 the first two games then the Rams will be on a roll and maybe hard to stop.  As you said time will tell the tale.

Yes we must show the IIAC with getting a win first. Showme I'll say this...like I said I love your optimism and I too am optimistic of the Rams as I have been every year, but heys and I do not disappear when things start to get a little rough on here..so basically I'm saying stick around the board no matter what happens...the more support the better and also it is nice to have a good number of posters from each school.

Don't read anything into the comments. I am not trying to silence any opinions at all.  I think this is the time of the year to be optomistic.  If you can not dream now about championships you can't ever.  Every team is now in first place.  They will remain there till they lose.  I was just trying to go on the record as I did last year that Cornell must get one before they get two.  I don't want any one ever to think they are not welcome here.  I enjoy all on here and while I don't agree with all that is said we IMHO have a civil discourse here and do not try to be haters.  If Cornell can accomplish what Showme says I will be one of the first to congratulate them.

The combination will lead to something that hasn't been seen at Cornell lately
1 conference win will accomplish this.....  ;D ;D ;D

My skeptism around Cornell is based on:

0 Conference wins the last 2 years
2 Conference wins the last 4 years
0 Wins against Central the last 10 years (Combined Score of the 10 games 389-62 w/ 2 games where Cornell scored > 7 pts)
1 Win against Wartburg the last 10 years

Just hard to imagine Cornell challenging for a conference title.  Maybe they will.....but....

I tend to agree.....but we could have put up similar numbers about UD 10 years ago, right? I suppose anything can happen....
Well, I didn't mention the school Cornell beat for their 2 conference wins...maybe doolittledog can help?

So, I guess things can turn around quickly......

Hmm, I believe it is the school located at 2000 University Ave. Dubuque, IA 52001!!!  ;D ;D ;D

So if the last school for Cornell to beat in the last 4 years can turn it around there is no reason to believe Cornell can't do it as well.  They need to add some numbers to the program though.  I think they might be another year away.  If Bush comes back at qb and with some schools in the conference adjusting to new coaches...I wouldn't be stunned to see at least a couple of conference wins for the Rams this year.

Cornell played Luther and Loras tough last year.  I don't think Loras returns much and Luther is going through a coaching change.  Those might be games to circle on the Rams calendar.  BV I can't figure out.  They beat UD 35-14 and then lose the next week 14-3 to Simpson.  Maybe the Rams could steal one there as well.

Did UD lose that BV game the week after they played Central?  Just asking I didn't recall when they lost.

Good question.  I will go one farther though.  What rookie coach has the most to lose with a bad season?  If they do not improve on last years season is it a loss for them? As far as your question I would give the nod to Simpson right now.  Only from the point of improvement.  Staker at Coe if he does not finish in the top two he has not really improved he has just sort of maintained.  Luther I feel like with the loss of the Olineman and Sherdan are huge ones to overcome.  I think Luther maintains this year under a new coach and system.  Simpson has the most parts back for the new coach so if he can not improve on Simpson's record last year it would be a setback as well.  Simpson could sneak up on UD and BV and maybe get to 500 which would be an improvement over the past few years.

It is always easy to predict that one or two games will play a key role in determining the conference champs.  In recent years most people have pointed to Central/Wartburg and that will be big again this year.  But what game will be a surprise pivotal game in determining the IIAC champion this year?

1) Cornell vs Wartburg
2) Central vs Cornell
3) Coe vs Cornell

Bartender...I'll have what he's having.

I hope it is a legal substance and not a controled one.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

UD beat Loras 28-14 the week after losing to Central.  Then went to BV and got hammered.  Then the Spartans came back home and beat Luther 35-31 to end the season.

I love football.  UD beats Simpson 35-20.  BV beats UD 35-14....the next week Simpson beats BV 14-3!!!
