Hmm, this one might make sense as well.

Forget tradition and recruit like crazy.

Is it someone on here that has the Don Coryell quote in their sig??? - The country is full of good coaches. What it takes to win is a bunch of interested players.

So, with this theory.  The story would go, all the schools have good coaches.  Some recruit better than others.  So if Coach B and Coach Glo start to out recruit Central and Wartburg we could see a new world order in the IIAC???  Hmm, possibly.

Yes, DBQ1965 that is green at Chalmers...I mean Moco Mercer Stadium!!!

It seems wednesday all they could get in was the north endzone and the 5 yard line.  Then thursday they got out to about the 30...then on friday they get the whole thing done by like 1pm...so I don't know exactly what was going on there.  It does look nice though.

2 weeks ago when my family was in Dubuque we didn't get by the place owing to some cranky kids.  But my sister and her husband will be in Dubuque this weekend for a wedding and they are under orders to get a bunch of pictures of the place.

I hope they keep calling it "Chalmers Field" for the big layout ... and then refer to "Moco Mercer Stadium" within the confines of Chalmers.  By the way ... Coach Mercer was at UD when I was a student there ... coaching wrestling and track.  He was an institution.  And one of my classmates was the grandson of Judge Chalmers, after whom the field was named.

Finally, I forgot to add the up-dated list of IIAC Fan Base ... so here it is.

IIAC FAN BASE

I guess I mellowed out too much up north.  I forgot to add this nice, Saturday morning picture from  Moco Mercer Stadium at Chalmers Field, now/old home of the University of Dubuque Spartans.

I would say Doolittledog and 5 Words or Less are correct.  You have to get the horses in the barn first.

Now, tradition (Central) may encourage a few more horses to your barn and a new barn (Dubuque) might also help.

I suppose they could really commercialize the new Dubuque digs.

Welcome back to Simpson football where today the Storm are taking on the Dubuque Spartans on Chalmers Field at Moco Mercer Stadium.  Your announcing team is calling the plays from the DBQ1965 press box.  When we left for commercial break the Storm had the ball at the doolittledog 5 yard line and the ball is at the WillieU left hash mark.  For the start of the 4th quarter the Storm will be trying to score into the Keith45 endzone.  The refs have whistled the play on and the players are awaiting the play call from their coaches over on the spurrier sideline!!!  Hopefully it doesn't get THAT commercialized!!!

So Moco Mercer was a star athlete at Simpson before coming over to Dubuque and coaching Football, Basketball, Track, and wrestling!!!  Were there any other sports he coached???  I know in the 1940's he coached Dubuque to 3 conference titles in Football, 4 in Basketball, and 3 in Track.  He is quite the legend.  I wish I knew more about the man.

WH got a question. Why did Coach K give up OC and give it to Coach Morrison ? Why chance something that doesn't need to be Chanced ? Don't take this to mean anything against Morrison.  This is just confusing to me.
I'm aware I'm NOT WH and have no inside connections to Wartburg football.  From the outside, I would guess Coach K is giving an opportunity to an individual to grow and take on more responsibility.  From my point of view, this is one of the qualities great companies and managers demonstrate.  This creates an atmosphere where people want to work hard b/c if they excel and put in there time they will have a chance to move up.  I think this helps recruit high quality coaches and retain good ones.  Just an opinion from the outside and I may be way off.  Also, the best managers I've worked for delegated and we usually got more done than the micro-managers I've worked for.

We must not forget how important a supportive admnistration is to athletic success.  During my years at Wartburg, the President appeared to be happy with a championship caliber mens basketball team and respectability with the other programs to the point that they only needed to stay out of the IIAC cellar and win an occasional league title.  The next administration seemed intent in changing the image and culture of the college to something that paid little interest to athletics.  This was followed by the administrations of Vogel and Ohle.  These gentlemen see the value of a strong athletic department (and music) as a good recruiting tool for new students and a source of pride for alumni.

With well over half of the student body participating in athletic or music, it is easy to see why success in these areas is important.  Who really wants to hook on with a losing program?

Pride is important because it equals giving. Unless you have a couple big Sugar Daddies it takes a whole bunch of smaller givers to fill the treasury.  Prior to the 70's large numbers of Wartburg alumni were preachers and teachers.  Both noble professions, but careers that are unlikely to send you into a mega-income category.  This is evident in the relative low endowment Wartburg had over the years.  Now, those students who began graduating in the 70's, 80's with degrees that sent them into higher income professions or into entrepreneurial endevours are beginning to anticipate retirment and estate planning.  Seeing your alma matre have successes athletically helps build pride in some parts of your alumni base.

If its like it was when D-Coordinators were named under Willis, it meant someone else had the title, and therefore the ability to put it on their resume. I don't think at that point any of the responsibilities changed. I doubt it will this time either, but I don't know for sure.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

What a wonderful day. Being from Indianola it's hot air balloon time and it was nice going to work this morning and looking out watching the balloons against the blue sky.  Couldn't ask for me except some football to watch this weekend but will have to make due for another month or 2.

koekrazy87

scratch that.  You know its been a long work week when you can't remember what day it is.  I meant it would be better if there were some games going on today.  Yes NFL is all good and such but college is much better.

This would be my guess too.  There also might be a pay bump included in going from a standard assistant coach to a coordinator, but I'm not sure about that.  Willis did the same thing after either the '03 or '04 season when he made Koehler the Associate Head Coach and promoted one of the defensive coaches to D-Coordinator (can't remember if it was Detwiler or Beck).
