After seeing Central play quite a bit last year, I'd say their biggest question mark coming into this season is the offensive line.  That's probably the area where they have the most experience coming back, but if you watched Central play much last year you have to wonder about that unit.  For all the hits that Connell took and the stretches of time where they really struggled to open holes for the rushing attack (see:  Bethel game), I'm not sure how confident I'd be in them if I were McMartin.  For all the other replacing that Central has to do on offense, if that line isn't getting the job done, it will be very hard for anyone else on that side of the ball to get to a comfort level where success is possible.

Same issue for Cornell. If we get the OL/DL play? The expectations Central's McMartin is setting up will be true, several losses across the conference and a dog fight to determine the IIAC champ.

DBQ1965, my family was pretty happy to have me back. They kept saying how nice it was to be able to just pick up the cell phone and call me. My contract is up in two years, but I am going to Special Forces selection in October so if I make it through that it is another 15 months to 2 years of training and a 4 year commitment. Sportsknight, it is entirely possible that I could run into your mate. I ran into another Central player who graduated in 2003 as I was coming out of one of the gyms. Of course, he took the smart route and is now an officer whereas I am just a corporal. Back to football, my darkhorse breakout player of the year is Cam Waugh. I would not be surprised to see him taking some snaps as a running back as well as lining up at his given position at WR. I kind of see him as a poor man's Blake Elliott. Very versatile, very quick, good player. Just a hunch.

Reading between the lines, it looks like they are preparing the Dutch faithful for some posssible losses this season.

McMartin, who already has three league coach of the year awards and was the AFCA's choice as West Region coach of the year last season, said his expectations haven't changed, either, but it won't necessarily require 10 wins to meet them.

A great season doesn't have to be an undefeated season. That will require a few breaks and probably some last-minute wins as well. McMartin knows that 10-0 is but a few dropped third-down passes and errant kicks away from 5-5, as last year's squad demonstrated. The 2007 Dutch produced more drama than a Shakespeare festival. They were outgained in seven of the 10 regular-season wins, trailed in six of them and scrambled to get game-winning fourth-quarter scores four times.

I stand by my opinion, although Coach Mac is also possibly implying that the conference champion may have a loos or two this year.

By that measure, 238 D3 teams fail

I believe you are wrong in your interpertation of McMartin's quotes.  The goals of a conference championship and playoff berth are still there.  You don't need to go 10-0 to do that.  8-2 will get you there.  So you don't have to measure success by going unbeaten.

5 words yes there are 238 losers at the end of the season but there are all sorts of conference champions at the end of the regular season.  So there are many champions each and every season.

Oh sure, now you say that.  You could have had this talk with your son last year before the UD/Central game...but noooooooooooo, you didn't feel it was necessary.  Then Central goes on to beat UD in triple OT.  It's all your fault ;D ;D ;D

In D3, unless you are talking about a conference title, only 4 or 5 teams are legitimately competing for the whole prize.  So the rest of us 233 will be disappointed.

Take a look at the scores up until the semi's...the top three teams blew out their opponents.  Between MUC, UWW, and MHB, no other teams were truly in their same league.   At least WIAC teams managed to keep it closer to UWW than the rest of D3 (with the exception of MUC and MHB).

I think the Rams' goals are modest enough.  Win games in non-conference, win a conference game or two, maybe stun someone and put a chink in somebody's plan otherwise...but above all compete for 4 quarters for every game.

We can't all be Central.   :)
