So now I get to thinking...

Considering that Notre Dame has its own network as a de facto recruiting channel...why wouldn't a school that gets so many out of state kids, like Cornell, or maybe even Dubuque consider that a video webcast amounts to the same thing?

"Hey kid, come here and your folks can watch every game you play back home..."

If it drew one extra kid who paid tuition wouldn't that pay for the expense?

Reading between the lines, it looks like they are preparing the Dutch faithful for some posssible losses this season.

McMartin, who already has three league coach of the year awards and was the AFCA's choice as West Region coach of the year last season, said his expectations haven't changed, either, but it won't necessarily require 10 wins to meet them.

A great season doesn't have to be an undefeated season. That will require a few breaks and probably some last-minute wins as well. McMartin knows that 10-0 is but a few dropped third-down passes and errant kicks away from 5-5, as last year's squad demonstrated. The 2007 Dutch produced more drama than a Shakespeare festival. They were outgained in seven of the 10 regular-season wins, trailed in six of them and scrambled to get game-winning fourth-quarter scores four times.

I stand by my opinion, although Coach Mac is also possibly implying that the conference champion may have a loos or two this year.

Aim low ... make goals achievable

Aim High ...Win championships   ;) ;) ;)

By that measure, 238 D3 teams fail

Thats an erroneous statement considering this is a level that makes its bread and butter off of preparing young men for the real world.

Its my whole hearted opinion that whether you win a conference championship or not, the dedication, hard work, and chartecter that you build competing at the college level is enough of a prize in itself.

Klop,

I agree with your statements.  Having said that by the parameters that 5 words used he is correct as well.  I don't look at teams that are not the national champion as losers.  They do learn to be a team support teamates and other useful tools.  The learn to network at college use their friendships a lifetime.  These are not signs of losers.  There are many more ways to define being a winner than winning a national championship.

I was  told by the UD president that video webcasts were coming.  It was my understanding that it was conference wide and not just a UD thing.  The lack of any news on this front leads me to believe it probably isn't coming this year  >:(

I think the Rams' goals are modest enough.  Win games in non-conference, win a conference game or two, maybe stun someone and put a chink in somebody's plan otherwise...but above all compete for 4 quarters for every game.

We can't all be Central.   :)

I have higher expectations, the team should have higher expectations too! Winning and losing teaches life lesson's too. I've always learned more winning. "Yes We Can" be the best in the IIAC in 2008!

Coach  Mac isn't cocky or arrogant, which is probably why he is, IMHO, one of the more popular coaches among other teams' fans and coaches and could play into his COY success.  Downplaying Central's assets and complementing other teams strengths is a Central standard in preseason outlooks, pre-game and post-game write-ups.  I don't think he is implying anything other than that it will take a great team effort to replicate last year, which might include replicating last year's drama.

Its too bad something like this hasn't started up in the IIAC. I know BV and Loras students have sent out webcasts of basketball games in recent years, but I haven't seen it on the football side really.  I figure a school like Wartburg, BV, or Loras would be all over this on their own.  In the past we tried to do it with Loras basketball games, but Chad Wathall shut it down for some reason...?

I'm guessing people aren't exactly looking for student productions out of just a couple schools, but at least it would be something.  Hopefully, though, we'll see a more universal solution to getting IIAC games on the net.

I know Luther Web casted some home b-ball games last year. Hopefully they will continue to do that for all sports this up coming season. From what I have heard it can be somewhat expensive...but I don't know what it really does cost.

http://www.wartburgtv.org/

There is a link to Wartburg TV's website.  They have a live feed of their station, so I would assume whatever game they broadcast this year would be on here.  Also, they podcast and archive stories on their website.  Maybe they will do the same with sports broadcasts.

As for the whole IIAC have it's only tv website that broadcasts all of the games, it would be expensive.  I would assume it will happen soon enough, but just might take some funding.  Making sure every school has the equipment to shoot the games (you can get by pretty cheap with just one camera) but all the equipment to encode it and decode it so it can go on the internet.  Then also a big and strong enough server system to handle the many many people logging on to watch every week.  KWAR has had issues where they can only handle a certain number of online listeners at a time.  There was a game last year where it was full and I could not listen to a Wartburg game.  Obviously a bigger server to handle more people costs more.

Good luck to everyone in Iowa.  I hear up near 100 degrees in the southern half today, heat advisory as well.  We are getting ready for a rainy day (hopefully clearing up for my final old man softball game of the the season tonight) here in SE MN.  As an ex-olineman those kinds of temps make me nervous....but I would take them any day of -10 in January.
