I'm a huge Cornell fan and wish them the best but let's be realistic.  They lost their heart and soul of the D in Gustafson. And on offense they lost 4 of the 5 starting oline( 3 have been 4 year starters)and two solid receivers.  Also their fullback isn't coming back.   That leaves Hardman and a soph QB.  Unless they have an outstanding freshman class it may be another hard season for the Rams.  If Cornell is yet again another small team they may indeed fall victim to the injury bug again.  I do believe they will get a conference win without a doubt and I will cheer them on come every Saturday.

Go Rams!!!

Love the enthusiasm ShowMe and i hate to agree with the wartburg and central fans on here but they have a point. I understand that with a coach like cornell's brings thoughts of new and better things but the thought of cornell winning 5 more games and going 7-3 is a little lofty. The reason wartburg and central can talk so much is because they are at the top of the mountain.  I'm not saying that no other team can win in this conference.  When I played at BV we beat wartburg once in my four years so it is possible. I've been in the same place as the cornell faithful believing we could be conference champs. But there is a difference between reality and day dreams.

Here is an up-dated list, having added "corkballrules" and "tinman08"

I also rearranged the teams in order of most fans to least fans.  Where there was a tie in numbers, I went the alphabetical route.  I think the order also resembles someone's prediction on the IIAC standings for 2008.  Oh well  . . .

ShowMe, at first I got a kick out of what you posted, but after reading your verbal diarhea day after day, I know that you are just trying to get a rise out of people and think this message board is a way to pass overused football cliches onto your team.
Do you realize you are saying a coach who had a losing record his last 3 years of coaching HIGH SCHOOL football and has not won a meaningful game yet in college is now going to field a team that is going to compete for a conference championship.
Without you posting your preseason pep talks to the faithful readers and posters here, no one cares about Cornell. Quite honestly, not in any sport. What was the last sport Cornell finished in the top half of the conference in? I'm asking that as an honest question because I don't know.
-Purple Heys and Ash Park, I love you guys like message board brothers, but as part of the Cornell faithful, this guy is representing you and your fanbase here. Hope he's not setting your team up to get let down even more.
Oh, and Wartburg put up 35 last year on you with their backup QB. I don't know if that's something to talk too highly about.
If you consider 213 yards of offense to be "moving the ball well" then you are in for a VERY long season.

Let me check my fan list, you must be a Wartburg fan, I was right.

You Know, My Friend, time for some Straight Talk,

I know Cornell hasn't been much in any sport lately but history has countless examples of teams on the top that was on the bottom.

The real problem is, the Central and Wartburgs of the conference

"Cannot Handle the Truth"

The truth is, neither program has broken the final four nationally. You can enjoy your IIAC success and I'm happy for you because you are a member of the IIAC. Both programs are big fish in a small pond.

Now don't take it out on my optimism because as I stated above, Cornell has the most to gain. We can get a lot of excitement out of a winning season, we are a small fish in a small pond. Now better programs acroos the conference might help both programs be a big fish in a big pond.

http://www.d3football.com/playoffs/07/bracket.htm

You're right -- last year Central had a bracket named after them. They played in the quarterfinal round and lost to a talented Bethel team, who played Mt. Union, a.k.a. the Gods of Division III Football. Out of 239 teams, we were in the elite eight. Let us collectively hang our heads in shame.

ShowMe, give it a rest -- if we had made it into the semi-final game last season, you would be harassing us for not making it into the final game. Or playing in the final game and losing.

I know you're not much of a history buff, but remind me, again, the last time Cornell saw ANY post season action in Football.

By the way, if you think Central and Wartburg fans are cocky and out of control, you are more dilusional than I thought. If you want cocky fans, check some other boards and report back.....

You need more than an outstanding class of freshman to win in this league, all that means is you may be good down the line not this year ::) ::) ::)

Leave the poor guy alone...if he wants to have outrageous expectations let him...The Central and Wartburg fans really shouldn't even worry about any other team other then each other according to what I've read on here.

I think respect is gained on the field, not necessarily by records but by how a team plays...I played on the '06 Luther team that went 2-8...I can guarantee you that talent wise we were one of the top 3 teams in the conference, and we got a lot of respect from other teams. We just didn't(couldn't) win close games. Doesn't mean we were a bad team but record wise we were. And I know the Cornell is getting a lot more respect over the last 2 years then they were years before...so why can't he just believe what he wants to believe and at the end of the season I'm sure the record of the Rams will be punishment enough for him.

I haven't seen anyone on this broad disrespect Cornell, but I could see that change. this is going to be along season listening to this.

Better put a time limit on that.  Central won the national championship in 1974 and finished second in 1984 and 1988.  Sure that was a long time ago, but then again you didn't specify a time limit.  Yes, Central fans love to relive the past.  Then again, at least we have a past to relive.

Central has earned my respect, just be the best team possible in 2008, you still have the challenge of besting last years team, no time limit needed.

Very well said most teams have talent , getting that talent to play together is the key, 8) 8) that and lots of luck some years doesn't hurt either .

ShowMe, I've noticed that you like to spew quotes and maxims from a variety of sources (Al Davis, John McCain, Jesse Jackson, Jack Nicholson, Barack Obama, Aretha Franklin, TO).  Perhaps you've heard this one from your fellow Missourian, Mark Twain: "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."

When it's 3rd and 10, you can take the milk drinkers, and I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time.

Just want to put my thing down...

I post for my enjoyment, somtimes to tease, sometimes to inform and sometimes to amuse.

Pat has had the good sense to provide a forum for us to congregate and talk about something we share a passion for.

That passion is the key for the fervor with which we all support our teams.  Some of us are more articulate than others.  Some of us don't exactly represent some of that good book-learnin' that I thought an IIAC edumacation was supposed to instill.

But no matter.

I'd like to think that if we all met at a tailgate party with some good beer and some of Eddie's Carne Asada, that we'd laugh our asses off talking about this stuff.

Then we'd laugh our asses off as the Coe guys started pukling after 3 beers!  (See, I kid.)   ;D

So rather than running someone down because their team is too this or too that.  Its FOOTBALL!  Have fun!

Yes I heard that one too,
I've only expressed my hopes and aspirations. I was attacked for being optimistic, now foolish because my team is not one of the top teams therefore don't have the the same rights to support my team. I don't consider it foolish. I consider it team pride especially with what we've had to experience.

Some other reasons
• The top teams in this conference gets too much respect, they are not as good as the hype
I don't think the Johnnies gave the Dutch enough respect last year.  But that's okay, we did it the old fashioned way.  We earned it.

I don't recall the score of the Wartburg/Cornell game last year, but it seems to me that the Central/Cornell game was about the only conference game we had that was a blow out. I can see the other teams that had us down in the fourth quarter saying this, but I'm not sure you shouldn't ShowMe something before claiming we got too much respect.

2007 Results

Wart 35 Cornell 7  Central 40 Cornell 14

Regarding the Wartburg game...yes, it was the Yordi penance game; but Cornell was rolling out there with a Freshman QB, so that at least oughta rate for a little bit considering we mustered a score.

Regarding the Central game...this was the "We have Tim Connell and nobody else does" game for me.  Cornell, late in the 2nd quarter, scored to make the game 19-14.  With under 3 minutes, I believe, DF2k4's 2nd favorite son  ;) , led the Dutch to a quick score to make 26-14 at Half.

Then, when Cornell was knocking on the door at teh Central 5 in the 3rd Qtr...the aforementioned Freshman QB fumbled the ball with Central recovering.  If Cornell scores, it is 26-21, and still a game.

Instead young Master Connell engineers a TD drive that for all intents ends the game.

In one short sequence it showed what Cornell, for the moment, lacks; and what makes Central...well Central.

But I will say this, I was encouraged.  Our team, led by a Freshman QB, against the league's best showed signs that there is good reason for some newfound optimism.
