Some other reasons
• The top teams in this conference gets too much respect, they are not as good as the hype
I don't think the Johnnies gave the Dutch enough respect last year.  But that's okay, we did it the old fashioned way.  We earned it.

That you did.  Give us a season, though, and we might be able to forget last year and get back to our old ways.

Airborne Dutch

Just saw some pictures of the Central team doing summer workouts posted by one of the guys on Facebook. Good luck conference.

What a great day of reading I had to catch up on.

I am not going to take the time to quote peoples posts, but I do want to make some notations.

BOY:  Nice post about justifying losses and also the quoting reference.  I could not put my finger on some of them, but the "lets get down to some straight talk" reminded me something Al Sharpton would say as he addresses the Chicago Public School District and his plan to hold kids out of the first day of school.  I am not going on there I promise.

FBdaddy:  The post about eating crow with a slide of slaw made me laugh.

WH:  Nice story about camp.  That made me laugh as well.

DF1:  Great post in response to ShowMe.

One thing is certain my friends, I do not think ShowMe is a candiate to Zoloft, Cymbalta, Paxil, or any other SSIR drugs ;D

Last Butn not least I will want to respond to Heys post.

COY:  Its going to be won by a suprise team this year.  Cornell, Loras, BV, Simpson, UD.  I think this could qualify as the same year that Osty won the COY.

Its nice to think that we are getting down to days before kick off instead of weeks!

Central has earned my respect, just be the best team possible in 2008, you still have the challenge of besting last years team, no time limit needed.
As a decades long Central fan, I don't expect this year's Central team to best last year's team.  Last year's team was special with a lot of special players.  I will be thrilled if this year's team can just win the conference.  Much as I hate to say it, I would be content to finish in a tie for first place, given what we have lost to graduation.  You don't replace that kind of talent over night any more than bringing in one good freshman class will turn a bottom tier team into a top tier team.  We don't have the luxury of the full season to try players out before facing what all of us expect will be the toughest challenge of the regular season.  We get that in game 2.  Then pretty much every conference game after that as well.  Central may have had special players last year, but they still had to take it one game at a time.  We didn't have the luxury of a lot of easy wins, and that isn't going to change when you graduate most of the key players.

I have said it before and I will say it again, If Central can repeat going undefeated in the conference, Coach Mac should win COY hands down.  Do I believe there is a chance we could do it?  Sure, I'm as optomistic and supportive of my team as ShowMe is of his.  But every week is going to be a challenge and my red-tinted glasses don't prevent me from knowing that.

Regarding Synchronized Diving...

Just once...once...I'd like to see them do a synchronized cannonball.   ;D

The entire Chinese women's gymnastics team could do a synchronized cannonball and not make a splash.

A little objectivity will gain you respect from your fellow posters and ensure that you don't become "that guy" on this board.

Well said.

I don't remember the score of that Central vs Bethel game but I thought they should have won that game...I was really expecting them to as I think everyone was.
21-12 - I was expecting Central to win also, but it was pretty clear early in the game that the weather and field conditions were playing with our psyche more than Bethel's.  We just couldn't seem to shake things off and get going the entire game.  On a dry field, I think we would have won easily.  Weather affects both teams, I'm not making excuses, we should have been every bit as able to move on that field as they were, but it just didn't seem like we believed, and that was the only time last year that I felt that way.  Then again, giving the way Mt Union took it to Bethel the next week, I was kind of glad we weren't playing.  Ouch!

1) Predict preseason conference order of finish.

See post on pg  1186

2) Players of note your team, the other teams, whatever...just keep it positive, these are our own kids playing for the purest reason there is to play.

BV will be hurting on the OL after losing 2 seniors. The QB for next year looks  to be Matt Pearey. Our RB is back from last year. He's a tough runner so after that I have no idea what BV will be like. They lost a lot of key players on the D and some skills positions. It will all depend if the The young player can step up.

3) Coach of the Year...put out a couple of reasons.

Good chance it will be Willis from Wart. But I could see coach Glo from Simpson getting it. When Ostey went back to Loras he was one of the potential hires. Chances are that Simpson could do a lot of moving the ball with the offense he tries to employ

4) Playoff penetration...how far will our best go?

I could see Wart and central making the playoffs. I don't see central getting further than the second round and I could see Wartburg going into the semis if they can stay away from injuries

Willis if he goes undefeated

Great football practice stories.  I always loved it when the coaches did a little bit of "freshman hazing" (nothing serious).  There would always be one freshman left at the water fountain after conditioning drills.  As he would pick up his helmet and head back to the huddle our coach would holler over at him to "grab that bucket of oxygen".  The kid would stop and turn back looking for it.  "Right there by the left handed screwdriver" the coach would yell back.  Give him another minute or two before finally tell him to forget it and get back to the huddle.

Just curious as to what some of the other schools in the IIAC had for freshman initiation?  I know some times people get too worried about these kinds of "traditions" but I think it really brings a team together and helps those first year guys feel like they belong.

Greetings IIAC football fans!

I've been a lurker for a couple of years, and enjoy the banter!

Posting today for historical purposes only, specifically regarding Nebraska Wesleyan athletic superiority.  Don't know what they've done recently in FB, but Central pasted them 34-8 my senior year and the year after as well.

Also for the identity record, I'm a Central FB alum, & modern day Dutch SuperFan, Class of '84.  Even more, I'm a great believer in Iowa small college education and am proud of the entire IIAC.  (I can say that now that Wm Penn and UIU "done graduated".)

Keep up the good work.
