Let's see...The list of things to do before the season starts, (you aren't real fan until you've committed to print):

1) Predict preseason conference order of finish.

2) Players of note your team, the other teams, whatever...just keep it positive, these are our own kids playing for the purest reason there is to play.

3) Coach of the Year...put out a couple of reasons.

4) Playoff penetration...how far will our best go?

1) Predict preseason conference order of finish.
here's what I had yesterday

1. Wartburg - Willis is back and I'm a homer
2. Central - Will always be pre-predicted 1 or 2 (in my book) until they finish 3rd or worse
3. UD - New field, older experienced team ready to make some noise
4. Luther - New coach, new tricks
5. Coe - 3rd last year, can't fall too far
6. Simpson - D2 QB transfer could spark some offense
7. Loras - Dropping quickly
8. Cornell - Wanted to put them up higher, could see them as high as 5...always seem to root for them
9. BV - Someone had to be last

However, after reading some preseason reviews I could see Simpson moving up that list.

2) Players of note your team, the other teams, whatever...just keep it positive, these are our own kids playing for the purest reason there is to play.

Yordi, Hoerner, Herzberg, Goodchild, Botembe for Wartburg.  I really didn't get a chance to read a lot on any other teams, but a few names I picked out that I expect to hear about this season Brondyke (CEN) Remick (CEN) Dietz (SIM) Stover(s) (SIM) Reutzel (SIM) Wilkens (COE)  Brietbach (COE) Hall (LOR) McGrew (LOR) Malcolm (UD) Tierney (COR) Hardman (COR) Bladt (COR) Donscheski (BV) Hansen (BV)

Season preview from Luther?  Didn't really see one.  No non-SR's on All Conference last year for the Norse

3) Coach of the Year...put out a couple of reasons.

Glogowski, if they are top 3 and only have losses to Central and Wartburg.  Willis should get it if he goes undefeated and get the Knights into the playoffs.  But 2003 was an undefeated season for Wartburg and Niemann at Simpson got COY over Willis then as well.

4) Playoff penetration...how far will our best go?

Wartburg or Central will make it 2nd or 3rd.  If Simpson or Cornell (that's for you ShowMe) ends up in the playoffs I see a well fought respectable 1st round loss, maybe even 2nd depending on 1st round opponent.

Well played, sir.   :)

A nice, night time view.

I should throw my son in the car and head over to Dubuque, sneak into the stadium and play catch with him.  Play under the lights and then you could watch us get arrested while watching the webcam!!!

Wow, took me all week to get caught up on here.  23 days and 16 hrs give or take to kick off, it shoud be another great year in the IIAC as there will be a battle at the top (Dutch and Warty), to stay out of the bottom, (BV, Loras Cornell?) and a big mess in the middle as everyone else appears capable of beating anyone, just not regularly.

So my rundown of conference finishes:
1.  Wartburg 9-1, 7-1 won the head to head in week three with so much more experience.
1.  Central 9-1, 7-1 only loss in week three but grows from the experience and kicks buttocks the rest of the way out.
3.  Coe - 6-4,  5-3 I don't see them dropping to bottom half anytime soon, they've been too good and Staker could be the man to keep it going.
3.  DBQ - 6-4, 5-3   learned the secrets of success in recent years but I doubt has the depth of the Dutch to recover from graduation losses (mostly Jermar).
3.  Simpson - 6-4, 5-3  From my observations they made the biggest step up in coaching of anyone ( I never was much impressed with Neimann) and certainly has some good tools.
6.  Luther - 5-5, 4-4  I don't know why, a guess
7.  BV-  2-8, 1-7 small numbers of recruits were mentioned last year, thats not a good sign.
7.  Cornell 3-8, 1-7  One of these wins in conference, maybe a middle of the pack team??  I was impressed with Bush last year, but more so with Gustafson, so only small gains for the Rams
7.  Loras - 2-8, 1-7  I will say impressed with the runners last year, injuries and all, but loses Hall from their strength.

Maybe thats not mathematically possible, but I'm just here for the fun and not interested in doing the math.

I have posted the reason I believe Cornell will be a good team: Let me say it again;

Things Cornell must improve in order for me to not eat crow/horns

•Must have fans, administration, community and student support. The fan support starts on the message board sending a message to the non beleivers
•Must win the battle at the line of scrimmage, offensive and defensive line must be our MVP
•Must improve the field goals kicking game, must score inside the 20
•Must improve the punting game to eliminate as a reason for giving up the short field
•Must eliminate the turnovers
•Must cash in on opportunities to take control of momentum/games. We must convert those opportunities
•Must reduce the number  of time we are in 3rd and long on offense
•Must be able to stop the run on defense

Why it will be different this season
•We have key skilled players returning on offense
•The coaching staff is developing an offense around the talent in our skilled positions
•We don't have the same constraints at the QB position
•The investment we made in last year's freshman class will hopefully pay dividends this season
•We only need 35 – 40 solid players and some breaks/luck from injuries
•We have some talented players that the conference have not realized yet

Some other reasons
• The top teams in this conference gets too much respect, they are not as good as the hype
• The conference record for Cornell last season does not show how well Cornell really competed. In most of those games, Cornell had chances to make an impact

On the post concerning the odds of my follow Cornell supporters getting the last laugh, I'll say, time will tell

On the post suggesting when I can talk about cornell again, we should have some good feedback on 9/20 and 9/27. And when I say we, that means you too!

On the predictions

Matt Dillon will be the coach of the year in the IIAC. Cornell will place at least 3 players on the all conference teams

On Wartburg, this is a defining moment in time for the old warts. The lack of playoff appearance and the Central dominance puts Wartburg in the same boat as Central. They both have more to lose this season than the bottom teams. If Wartburg doesn't make the playoff, they will be defined as a solid contender. In terms of putting 40 points on Cornell, did the Warts do that last season? Cornell was not suppose to score if I remember the pregame predictions. I saw Cornell move the ball pretty good considering the respect Wartburg defense was getting. An yes, we scored.

On Coe, Cornell should have beat you last season. The problems we had against Coe are the very problems we need to solve this year. Coe is caught in a situation where they can be a perennial middle of the pack team. Really Coe has as much to do as any other team in the conference other than the top two.

On the other teams, I really do know enough about them to comment. Based on the arrogance from the Central and Wartburg fans, I hope each of you improve your standings in the conference, at their expense not ours.

I hope this give you some insight to my optimism, book makrk this so you don't accuse me of not providing specifics and we can refer to it later when we sit up the crow cookout at the appropriate time in the season.

Hey, lets not gang up on the man because he's a fan.  I'll love the Cubbies next year even when they do lose the WS this year.  But to clarify a point in your post, DEPTH, ShowMe, its what makes Central and Wartburg's special teams something special and keeps them in those games into the 4th qtr when the opponents had a chance all game.  You can get by through a few games with 35-40 good players, but that does not make a season.  I still think an IIAC win is in the Rams future this year.

Just saw some pictures of the Central team doing summer workouts posted by one of the guys on Facebook. Good luck conference.

They runnin' up the side of the dam at Red Rock again?  that was always an impressive conditioning day.  I'm sure all the schools have some version of conditioning H*LL to reminisce poetically about.

Since I brought up the topic I might as well add my hangover curre.

First off wake up and have some hot steamy.....Oh wait I'm talking about a hang over cure ;D

My favorite was to hit the Godfathers buffet on the way out to your duck hunting hole for some mid afternoon to evening bird hunting.  After you get your decoys packed into your blind and the spread set, you have sweat enough to cure the worst headache and bubble guts.

My wife told me tonight that even she is ready for football.  She grew up in a very non-sports liking family.  I guess after 8 years of marriage I am starting to influence some of her likes  ;D

Doolittle this sounds like my wife.  One of three girls and not into sports at all.  Boy was she in for a shock after we were married.  My family always had a Thanksgiving football game.  Aunts, uncles, cousins.  So when she came into the family it was sink or swim.  That and having four boys that playes at least three sports each in HS she got quite the dose of sports.  Now she is as knowledgable about football as most men.  She is ready for football too.  Though she did say if it rains or is cold I am on my own to watch it now.  Just doesn't have the same draw when your kid is not out there.   ;D ;D ;D

Well, I'll give it a stab. I'm not versed enough to give you any strong reasons for my choices other than tradition, buzz, and what I recall from last season.

1.Wartburg
2.Central
3.Coe
4.Simpson
5.UD
6.Loras...(gotta be a little bit of a homer)
7.BV
8.Cornell
9.Luther

For Loras the backfield is easy to point to, but you can also throw in Ben McMahon as a strong reciever, and Reed Peterson as Brock Hall's understudy on D.

COY - Either Wartburg or Central's headman (For returning to the top or staying on top)...or if some other team cracks the top two.
Not going to lie...Dewey is a pretty good looking bird/furry beaked body builder.
