Also just saw that we got Cornell for homecoming this year...is there any reasoning behind homecoming games? Or is it just random?

I thought I read from some Wartburg posters that theirs is always whatever home game is nearest to a certain date.

The last few years, Wartburg's homecoming has more or less been the home game closest to October 15.  The only times since '01 that wasn't the case were in '04 when it was moved up to the last weekend in September for the Luther game.  I think the last few years the opponent has alternated between Coe and Loras, though.

AEN:

So how many new Knights showed up for the first day of football?  ???

Any Ryan Winters type difference makers decide to transfer in?  ;D

135 out 136 TOTAL PLAYERS expected showed up yesterday.

I have not had a chance to talk to any coaches about number of freshmen or transfers in. Will try to catch a coach or two today.

50 1st year players.

As for homecoming Wartburg does like that mid October weekend. (Octoberfest) Once the next year's conf. schedule is set a weekend is picked.

I know Wartburg played Luther at Homecoming in 1999, squeaked by at 20-17.
I don't remember who it was in 2000, I think it was Luther again. The only time we played them at their place was my senior year in '02 on their homecoming. Destroyed them up there.
Beat conference champ Central at homecoming 2001 on the dedication of W-H stadium. IIRC, We whooped them pretty good.
Lost to tri conference champ Coe at homecoming in '02. I don't think anyone will accuse Wartburg of scheduling pansies for homecoming.

As far as recruiting numbers go, I know there was going to be a huge contingent of returners for Wartburg this year, and incoming classes were getting way too big, still great quality in the top players, but in any large class there are going to be guys that just show up because they want to be part of a winner, and coaches don't tell kids that want to come not to show up. I'm sure this is the case at Central right now. Common practice was to have seperate newcomer practices for the first few days so everyone gets an equal shot.

I wasn't in school yet, so I could be wrong on this, but wasn't 2000 the year of the 3 TD 4th quarter comeback against BV?

If it were up to business owners in Waverly, Wartburg would never play Luther for Homecoming.  The Luther game and Homecoming will both bring good crowds no matter what, so it doesn't make very good business sense to combine them.

Yes, normally you pick a team that you can beat to impress alumni.

I'm hopeful Cornell will make the Dubuque administation chose another team next time.

Central has Wartburg for homecoming.  First conference game of the season, early in the year, lots of new players, not a fluff game...What were the powers that be behind that one thinking?   ??? ??? ???

Chosing Wartburg as the homecoming game is an implied message, Wartburg is not the Central of the IIAC. Thats like walking a batter to an easier hitting, a lack of respect for Wartburg  :)

Walston Hoover

I would add Coe to that mix as well. Those 3 games will draw huge crowds regardless of the date. Loras is a good game to have homecoming on this year.
You are right about 2000. How could I forget that???
Down 20-3 with 8 minutes or so left and scored 20 points to end the game. Dr. Tyler Molstre, also the homecoming king, was the hero that day.

Spoke to an incoming freshman at Central this weekend and was pretty upset to here this story. It sounds like Central has around 140 guys in camp, which seems pretty high, but the part that bothers/worries me is the fact that in this particular players recruitment he was told that they wouldn't have more then 115 to 120 guys on the team and that he would have plenty of reps in practice. I would hope that Central just had more people show up then they actually recruited, which is a very realistic possibility. From hearing from a few people some of the coaches on the staff were pretty upset with the numbers and felt they were to high. It seems like when you get up over 130 players, your opportunities in practice are very limited and some very good players can be looked over. Is this a case of over recruiting to keep players from other schools? I sure don't know, Central was always one of the best and classiest programs that I ever played against so I don't think that this was the case. Any word from anyone closer to the program on this?

I know you guys think I'm delustional but like I said, it's more difficult to coach a talented team.
Everybody wants to go with the winner. The real players want to go make the winners  :)

Texas ball players are likely to be well-coached and fundamentally sound players.

I would need to see where they played (private school or UIL) what awards they won and size and speed to give you an idea of what type of potential that they have.

High school football in Texas is a "rite of passage", and most players aren't college material.  Nevertheless, there are few things better than playing on Friday night in Texas.   ;)

The players from Texas are from - Brownsville, Texas/Lopez (2), Los Fresno, Texas/Los Fresno, Killeen, Texas/Shoemaker.  And I did watch the Frosh from BV on YouTube, he looks pretty quality.  More Juke moves than NCAA 09, and I am saying there is a lot of R3, R1 and R2 going on after he catches the ball.

Another Knight fan entered the world at 1:56 this morning and God is chuckling away after giving me 2 girls.
Elisa Joy (Ellie) is 7 lb, 2 oz and 19 inches long. Has a nice head of blonde hair like her mom and sister and is quite a cutie if I do say so myself.
Mom and baby are doing excellent.
I am beat.
For the last 4 weeks I've had my phone on me at football practice and even the slightest twitch or sound had me going for it. Go figure my wife calls me for over an hour last night trying to get a hold of me and I never heard a thing. She got a hold of Coach WIlson and he tracked me down.
Its going to take quite a while to make up for that one.

Congrats WH

And at Wartburg the homecoming needs to be scheduled around the horse auction and if possible UNI homecoming.  From a community impact the horse sale is probably a bigger deal to restaurants, motels and shops than is homecoming at either Wartburg or UNI.

I assume IIAC office folk lay out the Conference portion of the schedule, trying to give each school one or two mid-October games, one of which gets designated by the local school as "Homecoming."  If one of those October games is a cup-cake, that almost guarantees a Homecoming victory.  I would be so bold as to say this year's Cornell team will not be a cup-cake!

I don't rememember many UD Homecoming victories back in the mid-60's. but I do remember in the Fall of '63 asking the then Dean of Students, Paul Davis, if classes could be cancelled the Monday following our Homecoming providing the Spartans were victorius.  UD was 2-3 going into Homecoming against William Penn ... and Dean Davis said that wasn't going to happen.  I asked if he meant winning the game or cancelling class and he said cancelling class.  UD won that Saturday, 35-12.

I know this is a little late, but I do want in on the pick'ems every week.  As I recall I did pretty good last year, Especially picking the teams who would actually win :)

+ Karma for reminding us of what else comes into play on when WC HC is scheduled.
