Besides the "back story" mentioned above, the other fun thing about beating St Johns so easily was that it got me all excited about Central's prospects for the next round in the play-offs.

Sometime back somone put the Luther Norse at the bottom of the IIAC.  I guess I will agree with my coach, Edsel Schweizer:  1) Luther doesn't have a chance at winning.  2) Everyone in the IIAC is too strong for us.  3) All the other teams are better, bigger and faster than you are.  Check 1954-58.

Coach Schweizer was a great leader of men who I would assume rarely, if ever, had a experienced veteran RB decide to not go to camp.  Luther has had very good retention rates on the football team over recent years, so it really stinks to see someone give away such a good opportunity after Sherden graduated.  It sounded like before camp it was planned that one of the other veteran RBs was even going to move to DB to get the best overall team on the field.

If the Norse stay healthy, hopefully this loss of a letter winner will not change things too much.  I still think the defense can be very tough while the offense is an unknown with all of the new players and new offensive coaches.  I just can't understand it when someone goes to an Iowa Conference college to play football and go to school, plays quite a bit as an underclassman, sits behind an all-American, and then quits when the all-American graduates?

Where do you dig this stuff up?  I'll bet you have an old Box-Car helmet from those days, too.   :)

Somebody on here mentioned the book...maybe oldnorse or thunderbolt.  I asked my wife and she found it on ebay or amazon or someplace on the net.  Fun book to read.  The forward for the book was written by William Petersen.  The superintendant of the Iowa Historical Society.  Not only was he a Dubuque alum...but was also my sisters neighbor while she was in med school at Iowa in the 1980's!!!

I'm a sucker for old obscure facts that are really of no interest to anybody but myself...I drive my wife crazy with that.

Sometimes I wish those old obscure facts mattered more to the Luther administration!

Buck Turnbull did a great job with the Iowa Conference book just like he used to do in writing history pieces in the old Iowa Football programs before Coach Ferentz took over.

Someday it would be great if someone wrote an addition to the Iowa Conference story.

That sounds like a great project for a student at one of the IIAC schools that has a communications major!!!

By the way, at that time Luther also had the highest winning percentage for Basketball as well.  Dubuque was tops for Track!!!

That would be an awesome project to work on, it might lend itself pretty well to a video adaptation too.  ;)

I don't want to say his name (I don't know why though), but he started at RB in 2006.  Camp started without him, so I shouldn't have the reservations about releasing his name.

The Norse had one offensive rookie of the year in 2005 and two defensive rookies that year.  Jerry Jaeger (former LB) was not able to play last year and probably will not this year.  With the additional loss of the RB, only Cody Webb remains on the team from those three.  Jaeger and the RB were the Iowa Shrine Bowl players from that recruiting class as well.

It is too bad as the Jaeger and the RB were lots of fun to watch back then on special teams and in backup roles on defense and offense respectively.  Those two were really good on kickoff team back then.

Sadly Floyd that doesn't surprise me to much, I know that he got off to a rough start with the new coaching staff, also a transfer a running back came in and from what I heard looked pretty good in spring practice. So I don't think that helped him out much either. He had some trouble showing up to team workouts also. Unfortunately though for a team with a lot of question marks on the offensive side of the ball his experience would have been nice to have.

Cheerleading?
Don't get him started. I'm not sure I can take another chapter of "Rudy" today.

And were gonna win....win, win, win.  I dont care if I have 30 guys from coal mining towns who grew up on food stamps and the black lung.  Were gonna out play them, out heart them, and out think them.  I dont care if I have to field a team of 9 guys were still gonna stick the run, intercept the pass, and sack the QB.  And when the day is done you will all see.  30 men who are, undersized,  with bones broken, noses bleeding, and metally exhausted will claim, the crown, win the prize, and feed the crow to the naysayers.

Sorry I just got going on the Rudy theme ;D

+K for posting that link.  My personal favorite football movie of all time.  I like most of them and have a lot right up there...but Rudy takes that cake.  I am so ready for football!!

Anyone got a countdown?

It's always fun to stomp a rival by a bajillion points, but the most fun I ever had was playing in games where we scored on the last drive to take the lead.  As nail-biting as it can be, nothing is as much fun to talk about with buddies than the fact the team did it in crunch time and won the game.

No offense, but as a Cornell fan, how would you know?

I did play at a moderately successful high school program where we often defeated our rivals by a couple of scores.  In fact my senior year of high school I didnt lose to my rival sport in all 3 sports I participated in (football, basketball, and baseball).

And just because Cornell hasn't won a conference game since '06, doesn't mean we have gone 0-10 every season.  We have had some nail biting victories and even one or two that were never in doubt.

I have heard the same good things about the new transfer RB.  I guess he and the RBs at camp are the only ones that matter at this point.
