Let's get some good talking points going on here so I can become a karma giver/taker by the end of the week.

If you had not chosen the school that you did, but instead had gone to one of the other conference schools, which one would it have been and why?

Much as I don't like them as a rival, I would probably have gone to Simpson.  They have a nice campus, strong academics, medium size town with close access to Des Moines and not too far from home.

Now I feel like I need another shower or something after saying all that nice stuff about Simpson.   ;D ;D ;D  I'm gonna wash that school right out of my hair.  LOL

Floyd in Iowa City

I will wait until later to speculate on the no shows at Luther. I've heard four names, that would have contributed. One is an OLineman that just had his appendix out. He will probably return in time. The other OLineman, I believe had some health issues in the off season.(LCNorse would be closer to that than I.)
Not having the transfer running back? It's hard to miss something you never had. However he did work out with them and went through spring ball with them and must have made a pretty good impression. I do know that the coaches approached a good returning back about playing defense this year, and he was willing to do it. That's obiously now not going to happen. As for the senior, 3 time letter winner? I'm with Floyd, I just don't get it. I hope it didn't have anything to do with sitting behind Sherden last year and seeing a transfer come in and turn some heads in spring ball. I would hope he is a better man than that. There are a lot of things more important than football and hopefully he made his decision for the right reasons.

I had heard some things other than the RB situation, but now that the roster is out I see 90 guys listed. :o ???

Let's just say this isn't the direction I was hoping for when I said I would wait for some fall practices before I picked the standings.

I would have gone to Wartburg.  Waverly is among the nicest towns in Iowa, they have a good bar scene, strong academics and athletics, and CF/W'loo is close enough to drive to, but not so close that you lose the small town feel.  My next two choices would be Luther and Loras.  Luther mainly because I love their campus, and Loras because I like the city of Dubuque in general and the Rock Bowl was my favorite place to play.

I wish I had been about 10 years younger and then I could have used the internet in my search for schools.  All I really knew about any schools was if I went and visited the recruiter when they visited my high school.  That and some of our teachers would talk up their school.  We sent 2 or 3 kids every year to BV because of a popular teacher at La Porte.  Other than that most schools were a complete mystery to me.

I had an idea that I would do better at a small school rather than a large one.  I considered Iowa but not too seriously.  I checked UNI off my list early because I thought they were too close to home.  I thought I needed to get a bit further away from home than a 30 minute drive.  That is also why I never really considered Wartburg.  Through business contacts my dad found out about Cornell and their 1 course at a time schedule as well as Dubuque and their aviation program.  I toured those schools and kept in contact with their recruiters.  One day when my dad was leaving for Cedar Rapids for a meeting he called up Coe and told them we were coming down and would be there in an hour.  It was either during christmas break or summer...I can't remember so they didn't really have anybody to give me a proper tour.  I think some secretary gave me a quick tour of the place while my dad was in his meeting.  I didn't sit down with anybody at Coe and talk academics.

It pretty much came down to Dubuque and Cornell.  I liked both schools.  Looking back on things I probably would have done better grades wise at Cornell because the 1 class at a time would have been good for me.  Aviation was my interest at the time and I really liked the Dubuque campus and the city of Dubuque.  I am glad I went to UD and the life time friends I made there.  I suspect I would have the same feelings for Cornell now if I had chosen to go there.

Strangly enough.  One thing I did consider is that I thought it was better to be a school that was in the Iowa Conference.  Cornell was in the Midwest Conference then.  For some reason, and I don't really know why, I looked more favorably on Iowa Conference schools.

My next option in the IIAC would have been Coe.  Growing up in the Des Moines area, it would have been a larger down and close to Iowa City.  I really liked the coach that recruited me.  He was from Mt. Union and showed off his rings and talked about how I would win a ring if I came to Coe.  After finishing off a mediocre high school career in regards to the win/loss column I was really interested in being apart of something.  Probably the biggest turn off to Coe was the fact that they has a terrible field at the time and the parts of the campus I toured seemed to be very old and out dated.  My next choice would have been Luther.  Two of my close friends went to Luther and I loved the campus.  There was great access to hunting/fishing and I thought it could have been a good fit.  In the end, the campus was a bit more liberal that I wanted, and I also wanted to go some place where no one from my high school had went.

Looking at the Cornell coaching staff, it appears I have more coaching experience than a majority of their coaching staff (1st year for 5 of them 4 first year coaching period). That is why I think they will go winless once again this year.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

If I i had not attended BV i would have probably gone to Luther in the IIAC. I liked the academic programs they offered and the Campus setting was nice. Outside of the IIAC I looked at St. Johns, St. Thomas, St. Olaf, Gustavus Apholphus and visited Macalaster in St. Paul ( my brother went there so I had to visit). I liked St. Thomas because of their Business school and St. John because of their campus setting. It truly was one of the nicest campuses i hve ever been on. St. Olaf and Gustavus Adolphus were my other choices because of their academics and small town feel.  Macalaster was more or less my dad wanting me to go there because my brother did but my academics weren't up to there standards. If i hadn't decided to play football in college though i would have went to UNL.

The N is for knowledge, after all.

If I didn't go to Wartburg, I probably would have gone to Wisconsin-Platteville.  Like Wartburg, they had a strong communications program, complete with their own TV and radio stations, plus some pretty good athletics.  When I visited there in the fall of '99, they were defending D3 basketball champs and Bo Ryan was the head coach up there.

I was so dead-set on going to a school with a good communication department that there really weren't any other IIAC schools on my radar.  Loras and BV have developed good programs since then, but when I was looking at schools, they defintely weren't where they are now.

So Luther has a roster of 90 and a freshman class of 24

Loras has a roster of about 100 and a freshman class of about 30

Cornell has 5 1st year coaches on their staff

Ruh Roh Raggy!!!

When I was at Dubuque I would often listen to the Platteville student radio station.  Some good kids on there but you also got to listen to some awful ones.  One girl pronounced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the Bu-Can-ers...it took me awhile to stop laughing at that one.

I can't imagine why one would commit such blasphemy anyway.  Once I've got 73 more posts under my belt, it will make your karma plummet on this board, as well.

I'm just teaching you how to make your karma plummet  ;D I am one of those rare people that is a fan of all beer.  I can like a Bud just as well as a Guinness!!!  Living in Dubuque we became fans of all beers made in Minny and Wisky.  Strange, but around here I seem to run into people that are either beer snobs and will only drink micro brews...or people that think if it isn't Bud or Miller it ain't beer.

Funny thing is that the weekend we go to the Dubuque/Rockford game we plan on visiting the recently re-opened Potosi Brewery.  And on our way home we are making a stop in Parkersburg to the Blue Stem winery to pick up some beer making supplies.  Now that we are living at the farm my wife has told me I can start home brewing again!!!

If we keep all this talk going tonight you might be able to hit that 200 post count tonight...and then really set to droping my karma!!!  :o

I too am a fan of all beers.  You definitely don't get a figure like this from not being a beer drinker.  I can always go for the cheap stuff if I am low on funds, but don't mind hitting up the local "Bodega Brew Pub" that offers micro and international brews.  I am a fan of Bockfests in the area (New Ulm's Schell Brewery...going back this Feb. and Capitol Brewery in Madison).  I want to do a few more brewery tours...anything you guys recommend in Iowa?

Home brew is on my list of future hobbies.
