To have a successful season:

1) bring dry charcoal
2) remember the mustard and relish
3) keep the lid on the beer/pop cooler
4) arrive early to claim a primo tailgate spot near the pine trees
5) watch Luther coeds use the pine tree line as a latrine
6) get to Hy-Vee for black and orange M&Ms and Oreos

#6 would have been my choice till the bad news from my DR.

IMHO the Keys to Success for the RAMS (implies our weaknesses)

1) Offense line must be our most valuable unit ... Yadda, Yadda, Yadda ... 21) Must play 60 minutes of football

You forgot ...

MUST OUTSCORE OPPONENT

Substitute #6 with carrot sticks and either celery or green pepper slices!!!  Ice cold water, surround yourself with friends...still equals a good time!!!

As far as double headers go.  The only one I think I ever did was in 1987 we went to the Iowa/ISU game in Ames and afterwards headed up to Cedar Falls to hit a UNI game.  Can't remember who UNI was playing that day.

Has Wartburg had their scrimmage yet? If so, who was it against and how did it go?

For my Dowling Maroons to be successful this year.
Recruit a new stud LT
Recruit a lockdown corner
Recruit a Kick-butt LB
Recruit a noseguard that can take over a game.
;)

Maybe you should recruit WDM Valley's recruiting coordinator to Dowling ;)
We all know that the Dowling does not recruit don't we WH  ??? ??? ??? ???

Is anyone hearing anything out of the camps?

Who is the leading candidate to be the QB at Central this year?

Is everyone staying healthy?

Has Coach Dillion put ShowMe on the staff yet for motivational speeches? :o

Early on, the defense will have to carry the team, and should have no problem doing so. If the Offense doesn't give up a short field, or worse yet, a defensive TD, the Knights will have no problem keeping teams to low points.
Look for team to keep 7 guys in the box early on and put some pressure on the young RB's to find their way through. OL should be good though. The pressure will really be on the unproven WR's and on the more experienced Hoerner to make some plays early on and force another man into coverage. That will make the run game much better. The Knights don't need a great RB, just someone who can hang onto the ball and find the holes.
Special teams should be stellar.

I'd agree with this for the most part.  The defense is always ahead of the offense at the beginning of the year, which bodes well for the Knights.  I think the St. Norbert game, and to a lesser extent the Augsburg trip, will be a very good test, especially for the offense.  I think the offense will see plenty of blitzing over the season to try to keep the running game from getting off the ground and to get to Yordi to guard against any big pass plays.  Early on, it will be up to the O-Line to pick everything up and to Yordi to make the right decisions from his check-downs on through.  If the new faces on offense are pretty close to being up to speed by the Central game, the Knights should be in good shape this year.  I agree that the special teamers should be among the best in the conference, but finding returners to replace Suckow and Weber will be a pretty big objective.

Some how I don't see you doing a good job in the IIAC at nose guard.  I just don't think you are large enough for that position SK.   ;D

Actually I think he meant for Dowling.

BV's keys to success:

7.  no sacks, hurries, or hits on QB--ALL YEAR LONG

The first of the three reminds me of Wartburg's 2001 squad.

(after double checking to make sure that stat was correct, I noticed TE Scott Denner had a 200 efficiency rating that year)

Just got done with my first NFL fantasy draft of the year.  I did bleed a little maroon and gold by drafting Freddie Jackson.

Although I may be accused of some bias with my preference of IIAC TE's...you only have to watch 1 game to see that the Kaniggets have real luxury in having the hard working Hoerner back.  I see him as THE key factor in their offensive passing success.   He's a good route runner and is a tough cover for the IIAC outside backers...I think teams are going to need to roll the SS his way and do a High/Low cover scheme and force Yordi to throw it outside.  You can't let Hoerner be the one to beat you...because he will.

IF, your wife allows all of that, that sounds like a great weekend.  If she does, you are married to a saint!!!

It's kind of hard to stomach that college football starts in two nights, yet we have to wait another 1 1/2 weeks for IIAC football  >:(

My wife and I are doing a double header Sept. 6th.  Mt. Vernon at 1pm for Grinnell @ Cornell followed by the short drive from there up to Dubuque for their 7pm kickoff against Rockford.  Will do my best for looking at the games with a critical eye for analyzing.  Can't make any promises though.

I will see you in the MV!  Maybe I can talk Jr. to coming with me to watch the UD game that night...how long is the drive?

From what I remember it can be anything from an hour to an hour and half drive, maybe less if you don't care about the speed limit.  But may be tougher to get the convincing in as it is "extremely tough" to pass up on the Mount Vernon night scene.  Just messin of course, but maybe more than just Junior should tag along to check out the happenings at Dbq.
