Anyone else taking in some high school football tonight?  I'll be covering the Waterloo West-Dubuque Senior game fir KWWL TV.

Covered our first high school game of five this season.  Defending State Champions the Caledonia Warriors dominated St. Charles.  First offensive play of the game was long pass for a TD.  Ended up 64-14...game lasted forever with all the scoring and timeouts.  I think there was a mercy rule in there some where (clock kept running at one point).  MNBeev, do you know of any new rule mercy rule in Minnesota?  Back in high school we never had any.  Doesn't Iowa have the 50 point mercy rule after halftime?  Also, kickoffs into the endzone were an automatic touchback?  Anyone heard of this or is it just us crazy Southern Canadians with a rule like this.

I think punts that get to the endzone are auto touchbacks too.

Iowa does still have a mercy rule, but now if one team gets up by 35, they run a continuous clock the rest of the game.  No more 50 point rule.  Its good and bad, because while you do have more teams finishing whole games, teams can also run up 60 and 70 points or more, which is something that didn't really happen under the old rule.

That is not entirely correct SK.  If the lead gets less than 35 the clock goes back to normal rules.  This allows for comebacks.  But you are correct when the lead gets to 35 points or more there is a continuous clock.  I believe the only time the clock is stopped is after a score or timeouts.  They changed it from the 50 points stopping the game when it gets to or past half time.  They felt to many coaches were trying to end games early and not using younger kids to finish the games.

SK is correct.  That is a National Federation Rule.  The Kickoff as soon as it goes into the endzone the ball becomes dead and is a touch back.  Punts are the same way.  Even if the kick or punt is fielded cleanly the ball by rule becomes dead.

Minnesota Adopted the mercy rule in 2008.  If the lead get above 35 in and only in the 4th quarter then the mercy rule is applied.  If the lead dips below 35 the clock is back to normal.  There was a special instance with my team on the 28th, where we asked for the mercy rule to be applied in the 2nd quarter because we were getting smashed so bad...The other team's coach agreed...I think that was an exception to the rules...

Speedkills84,

Have you done your preseason picks and answered the questions on the pickem board for the tie breakers?  I didn't see them.  If you did just tell me which page.

Also anyone else want to do the pickems this year please get to the pickem board to do the preseason picks and answer the questions.  We will only have one more week till the season.

Got it done...thanks for the reminder kind sir.  I can be a bit of a slacker at times.
Terrell Owens was asked for one word to describe himself. He said "confident." When asked for another word he said "very."

Jefferson vs. Xavier game was crazy last night.  0 to 0 going into the last quarter.  Then Jefferson running back ran 60 yards for a touchdown.  Then Xavier had the ball on Jefferson 7, 1st and goal.  1:40 left in the game.  Didnt get in on four straight plays.  Jefferson took the ball and knelt down to end the game.  Jefferson 7 Xavier 0

True.  I forgot to mention that little wrinkle.

Wished we got KWWL down here in Marshalltown.  They have the best HS show bar none.

Really? We always got KWWL in Garwin, you must barely miss their market. Rough.

I didn't catch any games last night but usually work Dubuque high school games for Mediacom. I sold out to KCRG for highlights when fellow Duhawks worked there, but I've been a FN Heroes guy since I was little.

Also, I noticed today that Loras is joining the webcast bandwagon. We'll see how it looks.

Stretch Internet is the company Dubuque has used for their webcasts.  In the past it has been only audio, not video.  Hopefully when Dubuque updates their site they will also have video!!!

Walston Hoover

SImpson should stomp GV next week. GV struggled to beat Briar Cliff today who is absolutely horrible. Slight advantage for GV having already played a game.
Apparently 4000 people showed up for it, but I know a ton of people that were going just for the novelty of a team playing their first ever game. If they get over 2000 at any point throughout the rest of the season I will be very impressed.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships
