I wouldn't be too flattered...probably more to do with Wartburg being the homecoming opponent than anything. I think there's a lot of respect between the two programs but Central wants to beat W'burg just as much as Coe, BV, Simpson etc. To say it's just another game on the schedule would be a lie because it usually has playoff implications every year but every conference game is a big one.

Simpson is still our biggest rival I would say and again I think the shirts are probably geared more towards it being homecoming. The owner is a Central alum who worked in admissions and coached for Central before opening his store. Hopefully he's doing well with his everything there. Too bad a "Sports Page" bar and grill opened up right up the street too, I'm sure there's some confusion but I do like that to support that also when I'm back in Pella!

After reading a report from the scrimmage, I'm really not too surprised to hear the Dutch have a ways to go. There will be a lot of new names on both sides of the ball. I think I'm old enough now not to know many of the players anymore which is kind of weird. Last year's group of seniors (5th years too) were a very special group on and off the field. I'm hoping the next group is ready to step up and maintain the tradition. If they play as hard as last year's team and never give up down the stretch, I'm sure there is enough talent to do some good things with.

I'm curious to see what this year will bring with so many new faces. McMartin inherited some pretty good teams and I'm anxious to see how some of his recruits do this year. This will really be a good test of his coaching ability with such a young/inexperienced squad.

btw, it was a great day in Kinnick and fun to see the Hawks score some points. Granted it was Maine and that's what they were supposed to do but still some encouraging things from week 1.

I would beg to differ with you on the fact that Mcmartin inherited some pretty good teams.
There was only one fifth year guy he inherited.  Baethke is that one I am thinking of.  Schuring transferred in Coach Mcs first year.  Doud and Huisman were also transfers that coach Mc got.  This last years senior class was coach Mcs first recruiting class.  The recruits that are there now will develop into a good team they just need time.

6 days to ShowMe time,......  for you too!
Yes, and I can't wait.  Of course, I haven't been making ANY claims that Central would be better than last year.  Central could have a very good year again.  Or they could go back to 5-5.  I have a hopeful outlook based on past history and a realistic outlook knowing that we graduated a ton of talent.  I'm anxious to see what Central will show me.  I hope they give me reason to be grateful, not to brag.

Central fans, check out the Sports Page sporting goods store over by Wal-Mart when you come to town.  They have a very nice selection of Central wear at reasonable/comparable prices.  According to the owner, the most popular t-shirt with the students is the "Beat Wartburg" shirt with the Central C on it.  Simpson, Simpson?  Are they supposed to be our rival???  By proximity, yes, but Wartburg is where and apparently "wear" it's at.   :o

Klompen, are they online? I need one of those "Beat Wartburg" shirts. ;)
I don't see them online, but you can call the store # 641-628-4999.  You can get red shirts with white lettering or black with red lettering.  $14.99  Yep, I have mine.  The nice thing is you can wear it for whatever sport or year.   It isn't specific other than to Wartburg. ;)

Klompen and dutchfan1:

The information about the shirts is great news for Wartburg fans.

When a team with the storied past that Central owns, considers my team their big rival, I'm happy as all get out.

We'll take those shirts as a compliment!  :D
It is a compliment.  Of course, it could be limited.  Once another team replaces you as the only team to beat Central in football more than one year in a row, those shirts will be burned in effigy only to be replaced with the "Beat Cornell" shirts!

That one's for you ShowMe ;) ;) ;)  I've been hard on you today.

I agree.  Not that our team had been bad, but the season before was 5-5, granted it was as probably as close to a perfect season had the ball bounced the other way as last year was, but when they lost, that group didn't bounce back and mistakes by the coach only made things worse.

I think Mac came into the toughest recruiting class for football that Central had had in decades, and not just because we had a difficult year.  Mac brought in the talent that got us where we needed to be.  Good call DF04

Ha Ha Ha  :)

Cornell has some winning steaks to end and some to start in 2008. Hold those t-shirts till 2009.

The 03 season that you are referring to, Klompen, was a complete enigma. It seemed like it was gonna go well with that victory over Augie but the early losses to BV and Loras sealed the season right there. If you want to talk about a perfect storm of bad things for the football team, it had it all that season. With Coach Mac, I really believe that his experience at the D1 level and his coaching intelligence showed him what it takes to build a dominant program. The coaching staff has expanded and includes a lot more admissions counselors (recruiters) and a highly regarded strength and conditioning coach with a large staff to boot also. Call it over confidence or whatever, but I'm not too worried about the Dutch this year. I don't think anyone is expecting us to be Mount Union this year, but we'll still be trouble.

Just got back from dropping Senorita Heys off at Long Beach State.   :'(

Probably that it's just 60 or so miles up the freeway we kept the emotions relatively in check.  We'll at least get a chance to see her run Track later in the year.

Had me thinking back to the day Mrs. Heys called from her rental car after dropping Jr. in Mt. Vernon...she was blubbering into the phone...what are w-w-we doing?  We're l-l-eaving him all alone in the m-m-m-middle of the c-c-c-country...   :D

Attn:  IIAC AD's and School Admins.  Bring on video webcasting now, so I can see my oldest boy play more than once or twice a year.

First one to do that gets first IIAC crack at Rev. 3 when he graduates in 2012.

This kills me to write this...but a quote from our favorite Duhawk..du-sz was this..

I didn't catch any games last night but usually work Dubuque high school games for Mediacom. I sold out to KCRG for highlights when fellow Duhawks worked there, but I've been a FN Heroes guy since I was little.

Also, I noticed today that Loras is joining the webcast bandwagon. We'll see how it looks.

So I guess Loras is in pole position for Rev. 3...though I am confident the entire conference will have video by that time.  I wouldn't even be surprised if more IIAC teams have video this season.

I agree.  There is no reason that the 03 season should not have been another superior one.  But the ball didn't bounce the right way for us in those first couple of conference games and suddenly every other team BELIEVED that they could beat us and from a fan's perspective, it seemed that we started to believe the same thing.

I'm not worried about this year's version either.  I am just not making any boasts that this team will be better than last years'.  If that happens though, I won't object.   ;D ;D ;D  I think the coaches and the strength and conditioning program are the best in the state and some of the best in the nation for division III.  I don't think the admission staff has increased at all.  Phantz is good, but so was Jeff Sanger.  But I do agree that we should have another successful season.

We do have some holes to fill, but we will.  After all, from the part of the scrimmage I did see and what I had heard the score was prior to arriving, when they switched to situation play, Central was ahead.   ;)

footballdaddy

Anyone hear anything about Wartburg's scrimmage at UW-Platteville?
NKD: "We need a f**king touchdown, excuse my French"
FBD: "I didn't know touchdown was French."

The score of the scrimmage was 14-6 after a half with Auggie ahead.  It was very hot and MrsDF2004 and I left at halftime to get something cool to drink and do some work at home.  I had no doubt that the team was in a good position as I think our coaching staff does some of if not the best job of half time adjustments in the conference.  So that being said I feel good about this team.
