Saw the scrimmage at UW-Platteville and it was run just like a game for the first 8-10 possessions.
Wartburg did NOT get a first down and looked completely overmatched on offense.  A few mistakes by the Wartburg defense gave UWP 2 touchdowns and field goal.  I realize Wartburg was probably trying to be basic so as not to show any thing in case St Norbert was attending, but they appear limited on offense as they lack a physical presence on the o-line and an average qb.  UWP might be a little better than people think.  They could win 5 to 6 games.

Appreciate your report, rookie1 - we get very little information out of Platteville over on the WIAC board.

As a reference point, Platteville has only won 6 games in a season once since 1991 and have finished at the bottom of the WIAC looking up 8 times in that period, including last year. The WIAC SID's Pre-season Poll placed the Pioneers in last place again this year.

The Patriots were 0-4 in NFL pre-season action.  It might worry the fans some, but I'm sure the coaches and players are not too overly concerned.  Obviously, the NFL and D3 have little in common, but exhibitions/scrimmages are for practice.  Sure, they're nice to win or perform well, but they still don't count in the standings. However, nice to hear UWP might be a little more competitive this year.

I am putting their win total for the season, not in conference play.

I did the same.  Platteville hasn't won 6 conference games in 28 years.

I consider Yordi an above average qb, what made him so average in this scrimmage? Not knocking your opinion but just wondering what happened.

Umm, I'm not big on supporting Wartburg, but i wouldn't exactly pass off Yordi as average.  What prompts that comment?

....and Ash Park beat me to that....but yeah, whats the deal there?  Hopefully he keeps up his average-ness  :P

I do not think I would go chagning my predictions for the season based on Wartburgs scrimage.  Yordi is a good QB and as long as the boys will follow him they will still be at the top.  As much as I would like to see a changing of the guard at the top, I do not see it this season.  Maybe we will have a suprise, like Cornell winning a ball game ;)  Sorry Heys and Ash I just wanted to stir brother ShowMe up a bit.  One more week until the IIAC kicks off and we get to see how boys hit the ground running.

So what happened to the update on the BV scrimmage with Northwestern?  I was unable to go and havent heard much besides they played pretty decent but thats all
BV looked better than I thought they would and better than many on this board would have expected them to look.

The D looked solid pretty much all night.  As expected, Franklin and Sly anchor the secondary and look to be 2 of the top players on either side of the ball this year.  The D line didn't do anything outstanding, but I didn't see anyone getting blown out of the water with any regularity, either.  The linebackers looked good, but I didn't see anyone head and shoulders above the rest like BV has had in Pierce and Irvin the past five years.

The O line continues to be the Beavers' trouble spot.  Although the pass protection improved after the first few possessions (which were not pretty), the success of the run game was largely the result of fancy footwork on the part of Cory Donscheski.  Pearey appeared confident at the helm, and the receiving corps should be one of BV's most dependable units once again this year.

BV's 2nd and 3rd units dominated Northwestern's.  The freshman class appears to be loaded with talent, and, provided they stick around, could be the class that propels BV to the upper tier of the conference.

In summary, I think BV has a good enough team to maintain their position in the middle of the pack, but I believe the O line will once again sabotage their efforts to seriously compete in the IIAC.

Non-football discussion topic to get our numbers up before this weekend:  What did everyone do over the Labor Day weekend?

For my part, it was a pretty laid back couple of days.  Covered some high school football on Friday night like I already mentioned.  Spent yesterday back in my hometown hanging out with a friend from high school that ships off to Iraq in a few weeks (he's currently stationed out in CA so this was the last time he was going to be around here before he leaves).  Today I visited the Field of Dreams site outside Dyersville for the umpteenth time and headed up to Breitbach's in Balltown from there.  That place as an absolute mob scene.  I didn't end up getting there until 2:00, hoping to miss the lunch rush, and they told me it would still be 45 minutes to an hour to get a table.  So I snapped a couple pictures and headed back down the road.  Rural Dubuque County is very beautiful this time of year, but nothing like it'll be in a month.

Hey Warthog, are you headed Waverly way this weekend?  What time will your tailgate commence if so?  I'm planning on heading to the game and will be sure to stop by if your crowd is going to be around.

Spent saturday watching football and more football.  Sunday we went down to a friend of ours by Cedar Rapids.  They have Hawkeye season tickets...but this year are not going to any away games...so they can go to some Dubuque Spartan games those weekends!!!  His wife is a Cornell grad by the way...just to throw that out there.  Monday we took the kids to Hickory Hills park to do some fishing.  Our allmost 3 year old son threw his pole down after about 30 seconds and ran up to the playground.  Our girls were interested in the fishing but got really angry at the fish for not getting caught on their lines!!!  When I pointed to the hill with the big tree that overlooks the lake and told the kids that is where daddy proposed to mommy...they didn't seem too impressed and just wanted to get back home.  We then took the kids over to my parents and I fell asleep on the couch for 2 hours this afternoon...need to get my rest so I am ready for this coming weekend and the start of IIAC football!!!

Lets see, Sat. went to Pella, picked up some new Central gear at the Sports Page a fresh bottle of scotch, then played some golf.   More golf with eldest son today, but as the talked turned to FB the putting got worse and worse.  that must be why I don't golf much in the fall, even less focus than normal!!

thanks for the reports on the scrimmage Klompen and DF2K4.  I see 9 sophomores in Centrals published stating line ups so its not surprising some things were a little rough.  It will be interesting watching those two QBs go after the #1 spot.

Its hard to believe Yordi looked less than average in a scrimmage, although if the O-line is not up to speed that may have contributed, and its likely to have been just an off day.  I'd have to say that any WIAC team is a strong opponent even if they are the bottom dwellars.

Na, only shell out the big bucks for a special occasion, like when the Dutch beat Wartburg.  :)  I'll  be making some quality Rusty Nails after that one.

You sure the scotch is not the reason the putting got worse and worse???  ;D

They don't have any good scotch in America.

We drank it all.
