With this crappy weather we are getting I'm starting to think Heys mother nature must have known you are coming to Iowa. Hasn't every game you have been to except one been rainy and chilly?

Ok so I kind of skimmed over the whole recruitting convo but my opinion is that of course the teams that win are going to bring quite a few recruits and the teams that don't that want to...well recruit your a$$ off and win. I think it really is that simple. Of course you might have to change recruitting tactics and find what works...I think Dillon and his staff probably have changed some things up a little bit and that is why you see a slight increase in numbers. I believe hefty did the same at Luther. Win and recruit recruit recruit!!

Hey Dillon recruited well when he was at Dowling :o :o :o

How can I tweak the Dutch?
Saved by the plane.  Maybe his computer won't work in Iowa.   ;) ;)

Apparently he did very well. The administration has cracked down on that quite a bit now though. Once a kid is at another school, we can't make contact unless they call us first. Kind of like the NCAA. Tough to tell a whole lot in jr high if a kid is going to be a great player 5 years later.

Can we get at least to 1297 in the next 15 minutes by offering up our favorite tailgating foods?
Just food for right now. Beverages are a different topic.

When my bros and I were younger and would go to Ia State games, we would always hit up the Story City McDonalds and buy as many McNuggets as mom gave us money for. We got to the grass lots and played football all morning while eating nuggets. When they came out with the 20 piece, it was heaven. Not uncommon for us to order 120-140 nuggets from the drive through. They would make us pull forward and we had to wait for quite a while.

Alright....I understand what people are saying about recruiting.  Like WH said, we would all agree that 75 plus kids in a class is too many (for a whole bunch of reasons).   However, I wouldn't put the entire blame on the schools for recruiting that many kids to their school.  Most of the time the schools send info to HS coaches basically saying..."who do you have that would be interested/qualified to play football at the d3 level."    As a coach I heard something for EVERY D3 school in iowa....and 6 of them came to our hs to initally talk to the kids...their messages were all pretty much the same.   Kids/families will make the choice that they want to make...for some just being on a winning program is something that really appealing.  Others playing time is more of an issue.     I played for 2 years at Wartburg, loved every second of it, was not very good and chose to go another route...I would not take back any of that.  College is more than just playing time!!

Favorite tailgate food:  Bud Light,  Meat Candy (smokies wrapped in Bacon and brown sugar) and chicken lip dip!

Warthog:  Come down to a game...our asst. is lonely in the "box"

My favorite tailgate foods are the following.

Beer Brats
Burgers
Red Hots
BBQ Ribs
Screwdrivers/Bloody Marry's

My fat friends and I tend to do quite the spread when we tailgate.  It not uncommon for us to be sweating gibblets off while cooking up a storm.  We cooked ribs and frozen them for the Orange Bowl.  Last year for the game in Chicago we made beans, beer brats, burgers, and hot dogs all morning long.  It turns into quite the festivity.

I love tailgating and do not get me wrong by my statements here but I really hate it when you have a person who comes to your tailgate eats and then leaves.  They do not bring anything and are just mooching off you.  My favorite quote was from a girl who came by and ate two hamburgers and slamed 5 beers.  "Its tailgating, thats what you do walk around eating and drinking".  A man of less moral integrity might have slapped her.

Little late to the recruiting discussion (trying to stay away as long as possible as to not get TOO excited for Saturday)...but I digress.

It was mentioned briefly earlier by another poster - but the main reason that Central or Wartburg or ANYONE would bring in 100, 200, 300 football players if they could is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.   Each kid is 30k in tuition (minus grants, etc).  Bottom line.

Each coach is very different in terms to how upfront they are with their recruits, but I know that if I was ever talented enough to sniff a college football field, I'd take it with at least a grain of salt when they tell me I'd compete for playing time right away.  OF COURSE I'm going to compete for playing time, if I'm good enough, I'll play.  But am I really good enough?

Coaches are, for the most part, going to say whatever it takes to get as many butts in the seats in the classrooms, that IS part of their job.  If a bunch of them can play football, great.

Tailgating menu varies with the weather.  I have made soup and chili when its cold.  Bring sandwhich stuff to make hoagies.  I make a mean sloppy joe served on buns.  A variety of salads with potato salad the favorite of the family.  I make some mean baked beans just ask sportsknight.  Then if time permitted I would get assorted pastries from the bakery downtown in Pella.  Brats and burgers with all the fixings are great as well.  I try to keep the menu mixed up so we don't get burned out on the same old menu.

Oh the key to a good tailgate too is not to run out of food.  Have lots of it.  I think since I have had to change the diet there will be a lot more baby carrots.   ;D ;D ;D
