Great to see that.  Who were they playing?  The unis looked a bit like Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

Dike-New Hartford.
Big-time rivalry game in week 1 and amplified even more after the disaster this past spring/summer to both schools.

So Central/Wartburg isn't the only early season rivalry game in the state of Iowa ;)

And thanks for reminding me about New Hartford.  With all the news about AP you tend to forget the hit New Hartford took in that storm.

Walston Hoover

They took a double whammy-
tornado caught several rural homes on the higher north side of town where the new construction was because of flooding in many previous years.
Several weeks later the town was under water again.

Not that I am complaining, but how does Central drop a spot in the D3 poll. Wabash jumped two spots and didn't even play. How does that work?

I wonder if it has anything to do with the IIAC losing some respect for going 4-5 in non-con games last weekend???

Or it could be east coast bias  ;D

These polls are always a little twisted.  Years ago when Central VB was in the middle of their 3 National Championship run, Wartburg also had a very strong team.  Each time Central beat Wartburg, the Knightettes jumped in the rankings.  We were almost afraid to beat them again at the end of the season for fear they would jump ahead of us.

You just never know.  I suppose you have to start someplace, but to drop after a nice win is interesting.  I don't believe Central is a top ten team yet, I'd still be inclined to rank Wburg higher with all their kids back.  A team earns a place in the rankings proving themselves week after week.  Right now, for most team, a ranking is just a place holder.

Fairly certain the volleyball coaches poll is not at all similar to our poll, though.

All this rankings talk, I think it's important to remember we are just getting out of week 1 and that the season is still extremely young.  What you are ranked right now is not all that important, and it is something that no one really has control over, with the exception of those who vote.  If Central and Wartburg continue to take care of business and win week in and week out, then their records will speak for themselves and the rankings will follow accordingly.  It's been funny to watch the D1 polls and see Ohio state drop 2-3 spots even though they are winning ball games, which leads me to believe that the ranking system isn't the greatest in the world and in the end the only thing teams can control is winning every week.  Now if either team is undefeated later in the season and they continue to drop, then there is cause for complaint as that would just be illogical.  But for now, I think it is much more important to worry about getting the W's this week and worry about rankings when the time comes.

The concept that you must promote a team automatically if they win is exactly what's wrong with polls, especially the Division I FBS Top 25. A poll shouldn't just be a measure of attrition -- it should tell you who the best teams are at any given time.

Pat I agree with you on this.  There is no reason that Ohio State should have stayed in the same spot they were in last week considering their piss poor showing against Ohio.  Just as I feels its a bit overzealous when teams like Eastern Carolina jump into the 14th spot after being unranked the previous week.  I am happy to see some movement in the polls this season regardless of teams playing or not.  In years past its seemed at thought the top 3 teams could camp out at the top regardless of how they played.

....Luther uniforms, helmets, logo..

The helmets of the 50's were gold with a Norseman logo on  each side.  The change to white came gradually as they could afford to buy new ones.  Numbers on the helmets came later.
I have never cared for the current logo as was painted on the 50 yard line and is the Norse current logo.  It looks too much like a cartoon character of the comic page.  The U of Iowa changed its logo from a chicken hawk to its current logo.  Good change....shows more aggression.  Luther should do the same instead of being a comic character.

I think anyone considering writing a book on the Iowa Conference should make their first stop at the home of oldNorse.  I can't think of a better reference guide than him...and that would include the IIAC offices in CR!!!

Thanks for the support, Dolittle.  Historical memory only comes with age........after the Warts high/lowed the knees.......but I came back the next year.

Still think the Norse logo should not be a cartoon character......they play like one too often the past many years.

Anyone who could not go out and play football after Coach thomas' speech must have a cold black heart. i was moved to tears listening to that pregame speech. If anyone needs an example of what football should mean, just watch that piece.

With the overwhelming majority of the blood running through my viens being of Nordic decent, I also agree with the Norse moving away from the catroon Norseman.
