Three observations regarding todays football.

1.)  The scores were wicked.  Did anyone see the Auburn vs. Miss State score and the Georgia vs. South Carolina score?

2.)  How hard is it to get to the NFL?  The back up to Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart will be starting for the Patriots tomorrow.  The greatest QB of our generation (Brady) would not have played at all at Michigan if Drew Henson would not have went to play baseball.  USC is 4 deep at tailback and OSU looked terrible.

3.)  Just because I am on my soapbox....The IIAC and the Big Ten need to improve if they are going to compete in the post season.  I am a lover of both and it pains me to see them both perform so poorly out of conference.

Now that the Cy-Hawk serries is over its more important that both teams do not lay eggs the rest of the season and win the ball games that they should and eek out a couple they should not.

2 wins this weekend for IIAC  (Reds 36-DBQ3 in third)  Simpson and Loras.  Congrats to you two.  I believe we're 0-3 vs bottom half of the MIAC.  Augsburg may very well be a contender in the MIAC,highly underrated in their preseason poll (6th), Gusties 7th and Carlton 8th, all beat IIAC teams.  IIAC =  the Big Ten Conference of D3.

Augsburg contend in the MIAC? I think they're still a long, longshot,

Last year Wartburg lost but because they could only muster 13 points against the Aug defense.  In league play, meanwhile,  Augsburg gave up 62 to SJU, 70 to St. Olaf, 51 to Concordia, 50 to St. Thomas, 42 to Bethel and 38 to Gustavus ... finishing at 43 PPG in league play.

But the MIAC is wider open this year and who knows? If you're right, I'll certainly come back here and eat crow .... :)

I'll add some observations here:

4.  With due respect to the Clones  - Iowa still hasn't beat anybody to be particularly proud of.  although the D looked awesome today, ISU's youth and or lack of communication skills in the red zone was a big part of that.

5.  Earlier this preseason  we heard this Wartburg squad compared with their 2003 bunch.  2003 Knights were an exceptional bunch, 2008 has a ways to go, looks like next week is their playoff game already.  (Go Dutch!!!)

6. Coe definitely had the toughest non-con schedule and hung tough in their games.  Dubuque had an uphill battle today, with the travel and all, so neither team should be discounted as an IIAC contender.  Simpson may be 2-0, but see comments above about Iowa.

7.  IIAC now 6-9 in non-con,with three winnable ones to go lets hope for a 9-9.

Just have my Red shades on and worried about the Dutch win against the Wart next weekend . . . but with your observation, perhaps I shouldn't worry.

I feel like I should travel to the Old Norse and Old Dutch houses and spend an entire day listening to what they have to say about football and life in general.   Wise men they are.

46-9 Redlands...deep in the 4th.  Benches cleared by both teams at this point.

The thing that I still don't understand is the Johnnies getting the ol' baby seal treatment in Pella last fall.  In the grand scheme of recent MIAC/IIAC matchups, that's the one that really sticks out (especially after Augsburg hung with Wartburg again tonight).

Regardless of tonight's win and the surprising support they got in the preseason poll, the Auggies are not a contender in the MIAC.  They've made huge strides towards relevance and have a really nifty QB/WR combo, but they have no defense or running game to speak of.  I was beyond shocked when they beat Wartburg last year.  This year, too?  Wow.

I dunno Old Dutch, I'm inclined to say that the results in this series lately don't say much about either team.

Perhaps it needs to be considered like it's some kind of strange rivalry game, i.e.  the premiere matchup of wrasslin' Lutherans ...

We gave up 579 yards of offense.
Salivating.

Seeing that Carleton put up 374 yards in the air this week, CJ Feller might be breaking the same records he broke today.  I'd be willing to bet he goes for 350+ this week again, unless something big happens this week for the Cornell defense.

Coe just needs to find a way to put the ball in the end zone once they get in the red zone.

for int's??
doesnt matter if he goes for 350 450 or 550.  he needs to stop turning the ball over.  6 int's in 2 games.. never happened in previous years.  coe has to be minus atleast 4 in tunovers for the year.  in previous years, coe was always plus in the turnover diff.

Just got back from watching the DBQ get worked.

Met DF2k4 at the game.  What a nice dude...had a great time watching the game with him and talking football.

The Spartans checked out about midway through the second quarter after Redlands really started putting the wood to them.

The Bulldogs bullied the Spartans by the time halftime rolled around.

2nd half was more of the same as Redlands played through, over and around at will.

The DBQ isn't as bad as they finished, but it gave me an interesting perspective as to how they can be beaten...of course you need the proper personnel to pull it off.

Still, Redlands, by far, brought more intensity and sustained it for longer than the Spartans.

A disastrous mis-snap was the beginning of the end for the DBQ and Redlands was more than happy to dole out a measure of punishment.

So much for the middle of the IIAC prevailing over the best of the SCIAC

Judging by the day's results...we turn to Central as our standard bearer.

Our Kaniggets have let us down again... ???

I would agree.  He can't turn the ball over.

I would say that only 2 of the 4 interceptions he threw today we're his fault.

I thought I would get on again tonight thinking PH might post a late night wrap up.  Interesting take you have on the game.  I think this years Dubuque team might have some better talent that last years Spartan squad.  But last years group of seniors never would have let the attitude that showed up in tonights game happen.  That is worrisome for the rest of the season.  I am hoping Dubuque can get back on track next weekend in Decorah.  Play better at home the next weekend against BV.  Then head into their bye week and get some things worked out before heading to Pella.  We will see how the season unfolds I guess.

Nice work from Heys Jr. today.  Thats pretty much his entire freshman season stats in 1 game...too bad Cornell couldn't have game planned that for a week earlier when you were there to see it in person  ;D

That was just a good old butt whooping, not muhch to understand about it. I think the point some IIAC'ers are making is that our teams aren't beating the "bottom tier" MIAC teams as they should. I.e Wartburg vs Augsburg. Our #2 should beat Augie regularly...follow? Central has perennially competed with and beaten all levels of MIAC competition and others. Everyone in the IIAC needs to step up and win the games we should, while pulling a few upsets along the way!

I fell asleep in the recliner watching the Okla. Sooners beat up on the Washington Huskies.  When I woke up and checked out the Knights web-site I saw the results I had sort of expected.  Once again the Knights left points off the board in situations where they should have been putting someone away.  Last week they got by with it since they were playing an obviously under manned St. Norbert.  This week it bites them in the butt.

Oh well, I wasn't all that impressed with this Wartburg team when I saw them last weekend.  I just wish I wasn't such a good judge of talent and intestinal fortitude.  When I saw early season posts comparing these guys to the 1999 & 2003 versions of the Knights I thought of the Lloyd Benson comment delivered to Dan Quayle, "I knew John Kennedy and you are no John Kennedy."
