from the article, i would say it's dillon that is a bit over confident in his QB.  He said "Dillon guaranteed that I'd be all-district."  I dont quite know what all-district is in the IIAC, maybe something cornell coaches make up at the end of the year so their players get some recognition  :o

That's good. Mark it down as +k from me.
I don't know that Dillon is over confident as much as he probably needed to tell the kid that as far as recruiting goes to get him to Mt Vernon.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Kinda makes you wonder about the coaching and why they are winless if every player is the best. I believe that's TE, RB, and QB now.
Well, I guess now we know where the questionable recruiting tactics really are.    :o :o

Did anyone else read the gazette article where the Cornell QB was promised by his coach that he would be all-district?

Is that a mis quote, or what?

I just looked that up...don't know what the kid was thinking. Hes been around over a year, should know we have conferences and regions. Either way thats a pretty big mountain to climb. Kind of dissapointing they are more worried about him being all great than winning games as a team. I dont see Cornell winning an IIAC game again this year...

Hes not even one of the top QBs in the leaque ??? ??? ???
Five of twenty for forty nine yards against Grinnell. The same Grinnell that got spanked 55-7 by St. Norberts. It must be a pretty small district.

I saw that Lakeland got shut out again last Saturday.  So I would say that Central's best preparation for the Wartburg game came in the scrimmage against Augustana, a team that we beat who beat Coe.  Then again, that was just in scrimmage and only through 3 quarters.

Well qualified Wartburg fans say this is not a team that ranks with the best of Wartburg teams.  Central fans know that we have some great talent, but it has not been tested in actual games as yet.  Decades of Central football following tell me the Dutch have reloaded after graduating great players over and over again.  I always believe in my Dutch.  But I don't honestly have a clue what to expect on Saturday.  Will the offenses dominate, will the defenses dominate, or will one team dominate?

I do see the fact that Central has more time to prepare for Wartburg as an advantage.  I also think it helps that we didn't have to show Wartburg much on films since Lakeland did not provide a challenge will be to our benefit.  Wartburg may have to make more in game adjustments than Central.  We know who the QB will be.  Wartburg can't be sure, is Snead out of the picture or isn't he?  Even if he is, Bandow is mostly an unknown factor, Central's cardiac comebacks last year did not give him much playing time.

Wartburg has a very solid, high pressure defense.  Central's has a lot of new faces and they have not been challenged as yet.  I think they can shut down the run, but Wartburg hasn't really gotten that part of the offense started anyway.  Will we be able to shut down Yordi?  Can the defense come up with the INT's that they may need to get themselves off the field for a rest?  Can the Central O keep things moving against the WB D?  Which team's special teams will step up?  I have no doubts that Central's will when we are punting/kicking, but can they block the punts, can we get any defensive or special teams scores?

Lots of questions ahead.  Go Dutch!

I played against Dillon in high school and it was the same thing when he was at Dowling.  He tried to get kids to jump ship in order for recognition not winning games all the time.  Dowling was good when I was in high school, a la winning state championships, but it always seemed the recognition card was played over the team atmosphere and winning tradition card was played.

Sounds like Cornell might need a reality check if they are going to compete in the IIAC this season.  I could see the wheels on the bus starting to fall off before we even open up the conference season.

The Warty's are a little quiet.  I figured there might be a bit more banter on the board regarding the games.

I will stir the pot a bit...How about a 42-0 Wartburg victory this Saturday :o

Note:  My predictions were for fun only and not to start a riot.  I am sitting in a Panera waiting for a meeting bored out of my gored.

I'll play since I don't like the direction you're stirring and I'm bored too.   ;)

How about 24-9 Central?  It sounds a lot better, from the Dutch perspective.  I would love to say 42-0 Central, but even my rose colored glasses don't go that far.  But if Cornell can dream of winning the conference, why not?   ;D

I'm afraid they are going to let the team do the talking on the field, since it is way to early to pack it in on the season and disappear into the sunset like some Cornell fans over the years.   ;)

Kudos again to the fans from teams in the bottom half of the conference that hang in there from year-to-year cheering your teams on regardless of the outcome.  It takes determination to do that and I give you credit.  It would be a boring board without you and I really appreciate your unbiased input on the rest of us with red, orange, crimson, whatever colored glasses.

I wonder if there is an "All District award" hanging in the Coe locker room for the first D-lineman, linebacker, safety or back who gets a sack?

ShowMe

Somebody has to have some confidence at Cornell. Somebody has to believe at Cornell.

I interpreted the young QB quotes' as making a positive statement about the character of his head coach to help recruit players by showing future recruits that Coach Dillon has a good assessment of his talent and the talent needed. This is a very humble kid based on my limited exposure to him.

The kid is a good athlete, once the team comes together, he will be a good player to accentuate the team. This is a team sport. There are other good players on the team i.e. the TE, RB and Safety which will probably have a better chance to get all conference considerations.

Now, we have bigger problems to solve than arguing about who will make All Conference team. We have to solve our problems on defense ASAP. The offense moves the ball but have to do a better job of protecting the ball and converting in the red zone. If we can get some of the fundamental improve, then you will get a better picture of the talent at Cornell.

theyre called "pride stickers"
Coe gets the awards that other coaches vote on, not just the coaches internally
not sure i'm following you on the whole "who gets a sack" quote.

I bet Coe doesn't need any new motivation for this game. Coe's last IIAC game was against Cornell, and Cornell out played them for three quarters. That has probably been brought to their attention a time or two this week. I think both teams will see a different level of competition this week as opposed to the last two weeks. I think Cornells defense is going to be a welcome sight for Coes offense.

How 'bout a roll call for the Central-Wartburg game on Saturday?  Who's going to be in Pella for the showdown?

agreed... i'm guessing it will be a nice little spring board into the conference season, getting offense jump started.  probably why Coe played some better teams in the non-cons because they knew they could get the tough work in before the conference games, and get the nice confidence rolling after the Cornell game

I am curious why something like that was quoted at all? Is the kid that arrogant to believe that he would receive all-district(conference) honors because the coach promised him that?

That also begs the question of what the coach promised other kids?

I know that when my son went to Cornell, he was only promised the opportunity to a great education and the opportunity to pursue his enjoyment of playing sports at a higher level....not individual awards or accolades.
