Cornell is not better academically than any other school?  I am also a little surprised with those words.  I guess Forbes must've messed up then when they listed Cornell as one of the top 25 liberal arts schools.  This article sums it up:

http://news.cornellcollege.edu/2008/05/05/new-rankings-in-forbes-put-cornell-in-top-25/

My words were that they are not that much better. Do I think Cornell is a better academic institution than a UD sure I do, but to be honest I know people who have gone to just about every school in the IIAC and there are tough classes at every school. Do I think Cornell is the best academic instituition in the conference? yeah I do, but do I think we are that much better where we should start using the saying when we lose hey its ok you are going to be working for us some day...um no. C'mon this is the school I graduated from. Of course I'm proud of where I went to school but not happy about the administration there. I believe that Coe, Luther and Central are all excellent academic institutions and can be listed up there with Cornell. I would just like to see Cornell realize that those schools can do both, why can't we.

I agree with Ash on this topic.  There have been Luther people in the last 20 years who have also used the academic thing as a crutch at times when it really should be an advantage much of the time in athletics (or at least a wash).  When Upper Iowa was in the league I remember times when the Peacocks were having success (not that many) and some Luther people started talking about how easy UIU admitted students.

Upper Iowa did not have a lot of advantages going for it back then other than they had a good baseball and wrestling coach.  They also built new baseball and football facilities in the last 15 years.  However, anyone who is interested in being around good students or in a good academic environment during the day and finding a good looking girl (or more) at a bar at night knows that Fayette was not the college town of choice. ;D

The link above also is another example of how Cornell is one of the top IIAC schools academically, but not the undisputed top school.  A certain school in Decorah with over twice the enrollment is tied with them at the top of the IIAC.

I don't know, he doesn't look as excited as the 2 guys embracing in the middle, although I probably would have been doing the same.

Even Upper Iowa and William Penn have NFL Alumni.  Maybe not with as cool of names as Vern Den Herder...but other schools do have their NFL alumni.

Facilities are nice, but in the end I think it is support from the school administration that is the most important.  Central has it with their President/kicking coach...Wartburg had it with President Ohle...or however you spell it.  Dubuque has it now with with President Bullock...Dubuque might not achieve the success Central and Wartburg have had, but the administrations support has to lead to improvements in facilities and alumni giving as well as improved performances on the field.

Or the guy in the lower right corner yelling his guts out.  Didn't see SK anywhere in this pic...maybe he was off planning his post game streak across midfield in celebration.

I bet a majority of those people actually had good test scores but socially and common sense smart they had none. As for the people who didn't make it out in four years...it is becoming more and more common for people to go an extra semester or year everywhere. I can't even begin to name the people who had to go a little bit longer because of switching majors or transferring in or having to drop a block for illness which is a luxury at Cornell I believe because you don't lose as much as you would in the semester plan.

SK, you didn't transfer or switch majors...was there an illness I was unaware of that caused the 5 year plan for you?

After a quick check I came up with Mike Eischeid UIU played in 3 SB's, II, VII, IX w/ Oakland + Minnesota, and is tied for most career punts in Super Bowls-17,

Maybe President Roe can take up coaching free throw shooting or something on the Central men's basketball team.  They could use a little boost.  I don't know which is worse, being the eighth best party school or regularly finishing 7th or 8th in basketball.
I know this is the football board but we were talking about schools' athletic success in general weren't we?

The BV win really brought out the Beaver talk, if Loras manages to beat Coe (which essentially none of you think will happen), we'll have an 'ole hoops board reunion on our hands.

Coe is 2-2 in the past 4 years against Loras.  It is always a great game - but hopefully the Coe players remeber that.  That being said, i think loras has fallen a little bit very quickly

Coe will have to deal with that Loras defense which is # 1 in scoring and # 1 in rush defense.   I hope Atwater is as nervous about this game as he was about Cornell..... ;D

And what about that #1 for Loras at receiver.   The Coe d-backs will have their hands full!   Bringing some pressure might help!  I am very worried about this game.   This will be the real tell tale sign of how the Kohawks will be this season.   In front of their homecoming crowd the last time we played Loras in 06, we lost.

hes very talanted, but hasnt ever done anything vs Coe... i'm sure the coaches remember the last time Loras came to CR.. there will be no looking past them

This is going back a FEW years.  Simpson grad, and long time Dubuque coach Moco Mercer played for the Philadelphia Yellow Jackets in the 1920's and captained the All-Pro team in 1928.  He later gained fame for swearing at an official so bad during a 1952 game at Iowa Wesleyan that the official walked off the field awarding a 1-0 forfeit win to Iowa Wesleyan.  Iowa Wesleyan won the south division title that year with a 4-0 record with Dubuque finishing 2nd with a 3-1 record!!!

Sol Butler, who scored 31 of the 125 points UD scored against BV in 1917 ;) played for the Canton Bulldogs in the 1920s with Jim Thorpe.  He also represented the US in the 1920 Olympics and also the 1919 inter-military games...where he was Knighted by the King of Macedonia!!!  He still holds the UD long jump record of 24'9.75" set in 1919.  Never could find out if he was ever all-pro though.
