Watching Oregon St. beat USC last night and seeing OSU in their orange unis got me wondering.  How long has it been since Wartburg wore much orange in their uniforms?  At least for football.  When I was in school in the late 80's early 90's I think I remember them with orange at that time but my memory is more than a little fuzzy.

Also, telling my wife that the beavers/trojans matchup wasn't near as dirty as the old BV/UIU matchups was met with a blank stare from her.

There are all sorts of headlines that have been coming to mind with that game last night.

a little high school update.  Cedar Rapids Jefferson beat Dubuque Senior 39-8.  Tyler Evans the running back broke the school record with approx. 260 yards rushing.  They took him out most of the fourth quarter then heard he was only about 10 yards or so from the record and put him back in the get the record.  What is the consensus from the board about putting your starter back in after the win is already a given to have him get a record?

Vikings did it last year for AP when he was like 5 yards short of the Sweetness' record.  To get 10 yards in HS all you need to do is run like 3 sweeps and he would get it.

NOTE Evans rushed for 296 yards and three touchdowns.
I don't have a problem with it as long as after he got the record he was back on the sidelines. He only carried the ball 26 times.

I go old school on this record breaking shenanigans.  I think there's far too much emphasis put on individual records.  If a kid doesn't get it before the games a blow out when others get their opportunity, so be it.  As much as we like to talk about comparing people from different eras with the numbers, there's no comparison.  Too many variables.  I know my buddies and I couldn't play for Central today, its a bigger, faster game and so the records are just snapshots of the way things were.

I also think it leads to record setting atheletes being spoiled by their adoring fans/coaches and doing silly celebration dances in the end zone.  Walter Payton had the best end zone celebration ever, give the ball to the linemen and let them spike it, then act like you've been there before.

OK, that was a tangent, but with the Dutch in Michigan my mind wanders.

i was just told that Senior kept their starters in the hole game, even after Jeff put in the number 2's.  so, if they want to get the kid the record, and the other coach is playing his starters down by 39 (they didnt score til the 2's were put in), i have no problem.  the kid might not play after HS (who knows), and this could be a big moment for him

I don't think that any of us can say that we would not want the record.  To say that the game is a snapshot is correct.  Look at footballs first 40 years.  There were no passing records to break as the pass was not used.  If records were not important then why are they kept at all?  Records are meant to be broken end of story.  No matter how they were broken.  How do we know the circumstances that the current record was obtained?  No one really is around with maybe the exception of the kid or team that set the record and if it was old enough I am sure that even the kids playing in the game have forgotten the details.  I am sure that there are some records that will not be broken as they are just almost unobtainable.  No kid steps on the field to say that I will break a certain record.  It happens with the example of this kid getting put back in shows me that the coach knew how hard it was to accomplish and let this kid do it.  The kid may suffer an injury or may never get the chance to break it.  IMHO it was ok what the coach did.

At Dowling, we try to get as many kids as possible into the games that get to running clock and usually do. As that goes, you will rarely see any DOwling kids at the list of top performers for a given week. We have seen some teams come back on us and make things interesting at the end.
On the flip side, I was driving up to Pburg after leaving our game up 48-0 at halftime last Friday when I heard on the radio that SEP's star RB just scored another TD with 2 minutes left in the 3rd to put his team up 49-0. Why he was still playing at that point is beyond me.
From a defensive perspective, I am of the opinion that if the other team still has their starting QB in, we still have our D starters in.
Speaking of school records, A-P set the school record last Friday with 648 yards of offense...all on the ground. FB had 364 yards on 40 carries. Not uncommon # of carries for an AP Fb in a close game.
You come to Wartburg to play for championships

On kind of the same subject if the opposing coach did not substitute why should or would you let the first teamers of the opponent beat on your second or third team.  Many teams that were playing #4 son's team in HS accused our coach of running up the score.  When you have 30 kids on the team 9-12 there are not many subs that are ready to play another first team.  That year he tried to sub his reserves in and when some other teams did not sub there JV kids it lead to getting two freshman hurt one had a concussion and one broke his wrist.  The seniors had their pads off and after the second injury the coach said seniors get in there and end this game.  We did took two drives and we threw the ball.  I think that was the right thing to do.  If I had been the coach (the game in question with the record) and the other coach had not pulled his first team I would have been tempted to run the score up.  IMHO it is a two way street when calling off the dogs.  You can pull the first team but if the other coach does not want to IMHO the losing coach gets what he deserves.

Keep posting as I have enjoyed your perspective!

Hopefully the Norse Defense can play Simpson tough this week and the offense can do just enough to provide another positive suprise again this week.  There wasn't much defense in the Luther-Simpson game last year as Sherden tore up the Storm and the Simpson screens and draws gave the Norse fits on defense.

The Luther run game that Simpson sees on Saturday will be a little different than what they saw last year in the 47-41 game.

I have visited the Albion College web site to scout Central's opposition for this week.  It looks like quite a place and I'm sorry I won't be able to get there for the game.  Two things made particular impressions on me.  The first was mention of their marching band, "The Albion marching band, The British Eighth, performs for all college home football games, providing a new show for each football appearance."  It is their homecoming and I expect "The British Eighth," will put on a sterling show.  With luck I will get to see it on the streaming webcast.  The second was, "The Nancy G. Held Equestrian Center sits on 340 acres of undulating land on the Albion College campus."  It is my new goal to someday be rich enough to donate the 340 undulating acre Fannosaurus Rex Equestrian Center to my alma mater.  The only stipulation would be, they have to let me come by every so often and enjoy the undulations.

Albion also plays football at one of the best named stadiums out there...Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium!!! (that one deserves 3 exclamation marks)

Also looking at their website, the Albion uniforms will make you think you are playing Loras...and they went 2-8 last year to be even more like Loras

Another Loras link, Albion lost to Millikin by about the same score that Millikin lost to Loras.  So I doubt Central will have too hard of a time on the grid iron this coming weekend.  Beautiful campus at Albion though.

RE: the above and the central VS Albion game.

I am a Albion fan checking for Central comments on your threads, seeing how central looks this year.

I see Central has a great history and was very strong last year.
Graduated hard, and has talent this year though young.

Albion is also very young.
1 senior starter on defensive side of the ball.
Defense is pretty solid, decent speed generates turnovers.
Rolls 7-8 guys on Dline so alsways fresh late in games.

Offense is young as well, many of the "skill players I hate that term" are young, Sophmores typically. Lost the Senior Captain RB to injury early in Game #1. feature back now is quality RB, though young and learning.
Oline is young and continues to Gel. 50/50 mix on play calls typically. Would like to power run if game allows.

Kicking game is solid to above average,  do not let stats on FG effect view, God awefull weather 2 games now in driving rain and winds.

Weather should be mid to upper 70"s the Color in the trees on the visiting side of the field should be in bloom over the river on the back side of stadium, great view. Someone mentioned the Britsh Eighth marching Band, yes a new show every game and dressed in full attire.

If you come, tailgate a little and enjoy the crowd very friendly, nice campus.
yes they have the largest Equestrian Center to house and ride horses I believe in any College in America. Great country-side to ride and enjoy.

Were National Champ in the mid 90's have been back to the Playoffs a few times in the 00's looking to rebuild the last couple years.

Hope to see a Albion win, as it is HC but I feel Central will prevail.

I was reading the press release from Central today and says they played 20 Sophs and 11 Freshman Saturday...lost by 2 points on a last minute field goal. I dont know about everyone else but that sure is a good thing to see us go neck and neck with the pre-season league favorites with that many starters returning, all the while having over 31 Fresh and Sophs on the field all day.

Scary for the rest of the conference ;)
Been gone for a few days and have a lot of catching up to do.  Be careful what you say DutchHawk, I tried to express similar thoughts, but regarding coaching experienced players vs. inexperienced and people did not take it kindly,  even though the post was qualified with "wearing red glasses".  Those poor BV folks have been trying to rile people up and can't do it on purpose as easily as I could without trying.   ::)
