Warty,

I voted too soon.  I voted for WARTHOG, but I think I like Thunderbolt's suggestions of WARTSUP or UWARTME better. Those are great.

You have several fine choices there, and that bright orange license plate will certainly stand out.

So what your saying is that if your not number 1 then you can't make a living...come on...all I was trying to say is that just because you don't win a conference championship doesn't mean you can't have a successful year. If that were the case then most years only one team would have a successful year in the IIAC. So last year only Central can say that they had a successful year. I just don't see it that way...
I don't see it that way at all.  I see it as different schools define success differently in every sport.  Central has been #1 or #2 so often in football that not being in at least one of those two positions is seen as a down year.  We may be able to justify it based on the losses from last year and put it in perspective as being a reloading year, but having a worse record than the years before is not truly success either.  For Cornell, I would say a successful season might be winning one or two conference games.  Because that would show they are making progress.   For Central's basketball teams, finishing in the middle of the conference would be a huge success.  So of course not only one team can have success, but it has to be based on that particular school and sport in the same way that we each define success in our personal lives differently.

Don't kid me.......IIAC schools do schedule patsies just to pad the wins.
And sometimes those are the only teams that are willing to play them.  I think Central tries very hard to play good non-conference games, the year we played Augustana and St. Thomas come to mind as an example.  But if teams with good records are trying to make the playoffs, they don't want to schedule a team that went undefeated two seasons in a row because it could give them a loss that keeps them out of contention for an at large playoff bid.  Don't kid me......Schools do not schedule winning teams to avoid the losses.

LC,

You sound like the type that advocates for games to be played and not keep score.  No one is suggesting that these kids playing their hearts out are losers if they do not win the conference championship.  The kids themselves are not losers their team as a collective is though.  No one is attacking the athletes.  If you do not have a chance to fail you can never have the chance to soar or succeed.  If you do not have a measuring stick you do not have a way to see how far you have come.   You can only have 1 automatic qualifier from this conference.  That is the prize and the goal of every IIAC team.  That is how success is defined.  That is team success.  Are there successes on the field?  Individual successes?  I would say yes to both.  I think unless you just want to show up and kick a ball around the field hit somebody knock them down and not keep score then this is the way things will be.

that would be soccer, no?

I may be trying to resussitate a dead horse here, but here's my take on winning. In today's PC world I think we put too much emphasis on participating, and not enough on winning. This country became great by winning, pure and simple. You may not have liked us, but you had to respect us because the USA won. Now we don't want to offend anyone so we teach our kids that it's ok to just show up because you get a prize for just participating, no matter how good or bad you are. All this does is make slackers feel like they did something, while at the same time not giving the best their due. This has crept into every facet of our daily lives, and is why other countries feel like thay can challenge  us. I belive everyone should get a fair chance, but we need to recognize the best as the best. If you lose and don't like it, that's the way it's supposed to feel. Try harder next time.

BTW if you think you have me politically pegged, I'm voting for Obama!

I must comment on some of this...we are comparing winning in football to our country winning? I think you are forgetting a whole group of people. Have you ever heard the quote...."Winning isn't everything but wanting to win is" I think that about sums it up. The great USA has certainly not "won" at everything either. We have lost.....wars....foreign policies...domestic policies and so on but what can and has made us great is learning from mistakes and never giving up and when we get pushed in a corner, our ability to "find a way". In football, there is a whole group of people that want to win so bad it hurts but sometimes factors beyond their control prevent it....especially when you talk about team sports. And that group is certainly not just the participants or slackers as you mentioned. Other countries challenge us because they hate the arrogance of some of us. For anyone, you or me, or our country to think we are "better" then anyone else or any other country is a grave mistake and if you think about it spiritually, certainly not what our creator thinks. And PS- I played for UD during some of those down years. Do you think I didn't give it everything I had every game or in practice after losing only to see the same result? Or in the off season when I went from 180 lbs as a freshman to 225 as a senior working my a$$ off. But, guess what, we still didn't win. Was it my fault? Obviously I wanted to win or I wouldn't have put in the work but situations as it was, I didn't come on the right side of the Win/loss column but in my opinion, and I hope many others, I did in many other aspects of my life. Success is NOT about wins and losses. I know MANY people that played on winning teams that couldn't handle advertsity in other aspects of their life.

Here are some highlights from the Loras vs. Cornell game last weekend. It looks a lot better if you choose the "watch in high quality" option.

The Muskies had the MAC Thursday night game so we just walked in from watching MHS throttle Davenport West 44-0.  It wasn't that close.  West is like the second or third largest high school in the state,  You would think they could find enough kids to field a respectable team.

When we got home I was glad to see some really good ideas for my car plates.  We discussed it on the way to Davenport. Mrs. Warthog has made it clear to me that she will not be riding in a vehicle with WARTHOG on the plates.  She is considering CHOIR for her car and Doolittle's BORANGE suggestion is her favorite so far for my vehicle.  Keep the ideas coming in.

My sister will probably put BURGSUX or on her UIU plates.

#1 I feel we live in the best nation in the world.

#2 Fottball is never mentioned in my post.

#3 If you didn't prize winning so highly you would have not worked as hard as you did, and kept trying even when you didn't.

#4 The point of my post is that in today's USA we put more emphasis on rewarding showing up nstead of recognizing the best.

4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Mr. Ypsi

You're overlooking the obvious: if you're unwilling to put WARTHOG on the plate, go for HOGWART - you may be able to cast spells on opponents, and Wartburg is guaranteed to win the Qidditch championship! ;D
