I guess it only took a couple of losses to freak out the Orange Nation   ::)

This just a taste...a small morsel...a smidgen of the angst and disappointment that I experience every Saturday during IIAC play since 2006.   ;)

Here are some highlights from the Loras vs. Cornell game last weekend. It looks a lot better if you choose the "watch in high quality" option.

Probably not to Cornell fans.   ;D

Winning will not redeem me nor will it redeem the Rams.  It will simply be a win.  And then we begin working on the next one.

It will however affirm that hard work pays off...In this case the journey is equally as important as the destination.

For all the philosophical stuff, I want a competitor.  Winning and losing is only an outcome.  It is not a definition.

Case in point
In definition by outcome:  The 300 Spartans of Thermopylae were losers.

Yeah...you watch that and you'd think that Loras won the game or something.    :D

Speaking of youtube videos.  How long until we have our first IIAC contraversy because an athlete from our conference gets filmed doing something stupid and it shows up on youtube?

Like, say Heys Jr. sits out a game due to injury and he shows up at the tailgate and shotguns a beer...like Columbus Crew captain Frankie Hejduk did before a recent game... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_X8anlNYQk  Or, drinks a beer handed to him after a game by a fan...while still in uniform, like Mr. Hejduk also recently did.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tI7ykIZNWw4

I know that is different because it's the pros...and soccer.  But can you imagine the press if that had been a video of Derek Jeter or Philip Rivers?  Or Heys Jr. or the Nick Yordi???

I may be trying to resussitate a dead horse here, but here's my take on winning. In today's PC world I think we put too much emphasis on participating, and not enough on winning. This country became great by winning, pure and simple. You may not have liked us, but you had to respect us because the USA won. Now we don't want to offend anyone so we teach our kids that it's ok to just show up because you get a prize for just participating, no matter how good or bad you are. All this does is make slackers feel like they did something, while at the same time not giving the best their due. This has crept into every facet of our daily lives, and is why other countries feel like thay can challenge  us. I belive everyone should get a fair chance, but we need to recognize the best as the best. If you lose and don't like it, that's the way it's supposed to feel. Try harder next time.

(BTW if you think you have me politically pegged, I'm voting for Obama! )

The Dutch Nation didn't freak out.  Basketball season keeps it real for us.   :'( :'( :'(

But we need a win this week, or I might freak out.  I can't lose at football and the stock market all at the same time or I'm going to need a therapy dog just to get through the days.

I don't know, but I doubt that'd get near as many laughs as this clip:

You'll notice the Spartan Nation isn't jumping off bridges with our 1-3 start  ;D

Still hopefull we can turn this thing around and have a decent year.  It could start with getting a win tomorrow at Central!!!  Apparently I am the only family member that can drive my aunt to the airport in Cedar Rapids tomorrow.  I fear it is unlikely there will be a radio station nearby to tune into the Dubuque/Central game so I will have no idea of the outcome by the time I get home later in the afternoon.  I am crossing my fingers and not jumping on the somewhat occationally lucky mower until saturday morning to try to get the most mojo I can out of it  ;)

Iowa resident/Wartburg Fans:

The WARTBURG license plates are now available from the Iowa DOT.

I want to get mine ordered.

I know this is dangerous, but I'll ask the board for some help.  I don't think I want to use WARTHOG.  That might identify me too much.  According to the DOT application I can have 2 to 7 characters (letters, numbers, spaces).  I can't use profanity or sexual content.

Please help me out.

Why not HOGWART?  A popular choice with the Harry Potter kids.  ;D

doolittledog's faithfulness to the Spartan Nation put me in mind of a philosophical question:  Am I a man of faith more because I am a minister ... or more because I believe UD can beat Central tomorrow?

Blessings on the lucky mower.

GO SPARTANS!

Your case in point may have another outcome.  Yes they lost the battle but in the grand scheme of things did not the Greeks win that war because of what the Spartans did there?

Success can have more than one determining factor.  I think that is missing from our conversations and has been brought out to some extent.  How we each define success is different.  With the tradition that the Dutch have had my opinion is that nothing less than the IIAC championship is unsuccessful.  Is that narrow as DF1 has said I don't think so but she defines things her own way.  I go by what the goals of the team are.  Having heard the coaches state on more than one occasion that the goal of the team year in and year out is the IIAC Crown.  If that is there goal and they do not achieve it I would have to say the have been unsuccessful.  Are they losers no.  I think the terms have been substituted freely here and they are two different things.  As talked about on other boards in the past with D3 with there being a champion crowned of D3 there are 238 losers and only one winner.  I don't hold to this.

Don't forget to go to www.henkelhelps.com to vote for Parkersburg.  They are now at 80%, but we want to make it a landslide victory.  This is one election we can all agree on.

To further refine my ideas on winning, I believe there is too much emphasis on just participating. Our kids are brought up being told it's to just show up, no matter how they performed. There are no winners or losers, everyone gets a ribbon for being there. I believe that competition is good, and builds character. I'm not saying that those who don't come out on top are losers, unless they are satisfied where they are. As Vince Lombardi said"Winning isn't everything-the will to win is". That's what keeps us going. It's what keeps Cornell's players and coaches coming back and working hard. If they were satisfied with being at the bottom and "participating", why bother to do it? It's the same thing that drives Central's players to stay at the top.

My opinion is that the PC world we have today would rather have us, instead of crowning a IIAC champion, give everyone a trophy for "participating".
