Here's a long, long shot scenario from a Simpson fan.  Simpson wins out. (beats Wartburg, Loras, Dubuque and Central). Easy enough ;) That would eliminate Loras and Central. Wartburg beats Luther. BV loses to Coe and Central. BV is eliminated. Simpson, Luther and Wartburg are tied at 6-2. Simpson wins the tie-breaker based on head-to-head competition.

It's that easy.

The only thing that could make Central beating Simpson sweeter would be beating them and snatching a one third share of the conference title from them.

I don't see that Wartburg has an easy remaining schedule.  They could lose at Simpson, and lose to Luther at home and UD.  I say UD because UD has played a spoiler with the Knights before and I think they have the pieces there if a team does not show up and play their best they can get them.  Also that is Wartburg's last game of the year and they may have a let down if they lose the Storm or Norse game.  I am not saying that will happen but a possiblity.

Simpson does not have an easy schedule either as they have a long road game to UD, Loras (which has been playing decent) at home, Wartburg at home, and Central at Pella.  They could lose 3 out of 4 or even 4 out of 4 if they don't play their best.

Luther has Loras at Loras so no gimme there, Warturg at Wartburg, Coe at Luther, and Cornell so they could have three losses there as well and if Cornell gets up for a game they could get them.  So only 1 probable win with three toss ups now.

BV has to go to Coe which is no gimme and play Central at home with that being no gimme.  The also play Cornell and should win and be favored so they could have two losses.

So to tie this up there is a lot of football left and there could be more than two teams at the top when all is said and done.

Just FYI...the small town, small college definitely held an attraction to Jr.'s decision process.  Our drive up the hill in Mt. Vernon and down the street to Cornell was very memorable.

And I will say again, Cornell's football record and future prospects or any reputation in that regard was so for down the list as to being a non-issue.

I do remember mentioning to him as we sent in his $300.00 check, "you're going to probably play for a team that loses more games than it wins..."  He shrugged and said, "Well, I'll just have to help them win some then."

I think he could've helped most of the teams in the IIAC.    ;)

When I went to BV people said the same thing.  Why wouldnt you go to Central or Wartburg and have a chance to win.  I said BV was a middle of the road team, and how sweet would it be if we actually won the conference while I was there.  I liked the campus, the coaching staff, and the players.  People have said alot of things about Osty, but I tell you what he earned some points with me when I got hurt and he retianed me and let me help out with the d-line.  I met my parrents on that day and I can still remember him giving my mother a hug and stating that I was still apart of the program and would still be able to stick around.  We never won the conference and pissed the only good chance we ever had down our leg, but the experience and what I learned is all I need.  Even thought my right ring finger tells him hes lonley some days ;)

Good points.  Not everyone can go to Central or Wartburg.  There is not enough PT for all.  Also the academic side comes into play.  As PH has stated Cornell's class schedule was attractive to his son.  SK went to Wartburg for the Com Arts major you can not get that at Central.  IMHO all of the IIAC schools have their strengths for academics.  That is the bottom line for D3 players.

You completely and utterly missed the point.  I could have went to Central or Wartburg, but did not.  I wanted to make something at someplace that had not been made in a while.  To infer that Central and Wartburg are so holly that some of us people who come from the lesser class have to go to other schools to get playing time is a complete crock of crap.

And you missed my point.  What kind of conference would we have if everyone went to two schools.  I was agreeing with you.  I think that if you read the whole post I think there is more to a decision of playing football at a school than just the football program.  There is the degree to consider.  There is the chance you may not fit into the program or like the coach.  I never once implied that Central and Wartburg are Holy.  Where did you read into this statement?

Half the time your posts restate what everyone else said and I did read your post several times before I responded.  If you read the whole post you would understand that my post was fueled by Heys post and went from there.

If you are looking to make your point more clear, you might want to look at changing your words.  Stating that not everyone can go to Wartburg or Central leaves people thinking that you are taking a hollier than you approach.  A better use of words would be saying that not everyone wants to go to Warburg or Central and some players are more inclined to go to schools for other reason that the win/loss record of the football team.

Well I think the statement was accurate in that not all can attend Central or Wartburg.  The enrollment numbers will not accomodate all of the IIAC football players attending those two schools.  With most schools averaging 80-100 players  I don't see 450 football players in those two schools and they can not accomodate them all coming.  How does putting my post in Bold letters get back to heys post? Heys did not mention anything about Wartburg's or Central's Holier than thou attitude.

BV and Wartburg have done the most work so far and have the easier road. BV at Coe and Cornell where neither team has won yet and Central at home. Wartburg with just the Simpson game left on the road.
OK, let me rephrase that. Nobody has it easy. The two teams with four wins in hand have an advantage over the teams with two wins in hand.

I agree with that totally.  They have a lead because of playing an extra IIAC game.  The remaining games will cause some coaches either to lose some hair or have it turn grey.

Well we are a little slow on here today so I will try to create some conversation.  Which one of these senarios is the most likely to occur an why?

Cornell wins a conference game in 2008

Wartburg win the IIAC title

Luther wins the IIAC title

Buena Vista wins the IIAC title

There is a 3 way tie for the conference title between Luther, Buean Vista, and Wartburg.

I will go with the 3 way tie because I think BV will win out, Wartburg will win out, and Luther will drop one close game.  I think the Dutch lose another close game and the rest is a mismash in the middle.

My crystal ball is different....

Simpson beats Wartburg, Dubuque, Loras but loses to Central.  Record 5-3
Central beats Cornell, Loras, BV and Simpson.  Record 6-2
BV beats Coe, Cornell but loses to Central.  Record 6-2
Wartburg beats Luther and Dubuque but loses to Simpson.  Record 6-2
Luther beats Coe, Cornell and Loras but loses to Wartburg.  Record 6-2

Its a four-way-tie for the title.  If the most recent teams are not qualifiers, and Luther has the game on BV....LUTHER IS THE AUTOMATIC QUALIFIER FOR THE PLAYOFFS !!!!!  :):):)

That could happen.  But if you add a twist and Wartburg beats Simpson Coe Beats Luther and Luther Beats Wartburg I think you can still have a four way tie and Luther still gets the AQ.

Actually, IIRC, the first criteria is team's record vs the other title sharers.
In your situation, Wartburg would be 2-1, wins vs Luther and Central
and Luther will have beat Central and BV to be 2-1.
Central and BV are then 1-2.
Then, in head-to-head, Wartburg owns the tiebreaker over Luther with the win.
Rose Bowl rule comes in to play to only rule out the most recent team to make the playoffs if the teams have the same record against each other.

You come to Wartburg to play for championships

I pick the 4 way tie for first with Central winning out and the three currently with one loss all losing one more game.  Only difference is I have Luther beating Wartburg, but slipping up against an easier team that would have given them first place alone.

If that doesn't happen, I think Luther wins out.  They have been playing very well in the big games thus far, which is why I think they get one on Wartburg.  My hope is that they then slip up against someone else.

I would love to see Central shock everyone and end up in first place by themselves, but I don't see that happening unless things go really wrong for Luther, Wartburg and BV.  It is a given that Central would not be the AQ in a tie situation, unless they tied only with BV.  Much as I enjoy watching the Dutch in the playoffs, this may be the year to stay home.  I don't see a 2 or more regular season loss team going very far in the playoffs, except to get to the game site.

Fire guts rebuilt landmark restaurant in NE Iowa

Associated Press - October 24, 2008 7:34 AM ET

BALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) - Fire has again destroyed a rebuilt landmark restaurant in Balltown in northeast Iowa.

The fire at Breitbach's Country Dining broke out early Friday. Firefighters from several communities were called to the scene about 3:30 a.m.

The Dubuque County restaurant dated to the 1850s, when it was a stagecoach stop. It was considered Iowa's oldest restaurant. Fire destroyed it last Christmas Eve.

Volunteers helped rebuild it in the spring and it reopened in June.

The cause of Friday's fire is under investigation.
