warthog, I think there are going to be plenty of 56-7 or 63-0 scores Wed. night.

6-3, maybe.  But I don't even think there should be any 5-4 teams in the playoffs, much less 3-6!

I believe there is 49 teams and 32 made the playoffs. I don't know about the East side of the state, but I know we didn't have and 3-6's on our side.

WH, YOU GUYS ARE IN THE PLAYOFF AREN'T YOU ?

Weren't there only like 12 4A teams that didn't qualify for the playoffs???   :-\

Great quality "sub-state" games they've added in Iowa HS Football:
8 teams have losing records in 4A
2 teams have losing records in 3A
1 team has a losing record in 2A
5 teams have losing records in 1A (1 is 3-6!)
3 teams have losing records in A (2 are 3-6!)
3 teams have losing records in 8 Man (1 is 3-6!)

You come to Wartburg to play for championships

Technically, no one has made the playoffs yet. The state and everyone that deserves to be there is calling it what it is, the substate. There is no recognition for making the playoffs for anyone until after Wed night.
The only ones calling it the playoffs are the 4-5's and 3-6's that are used to putting their pads away come Monday.

Congrats to Coe on the overtime win today, 22-19.  Coe blew a chance to win the game right at the end of the 4th quarter when they fumbled inside the Luther 5.

Coe did almost nothing on offense all day even though they had the wind and great field position in the 4th quarter.  Both defenses owned the field for most of the day.  Both defenses were very strong as usual up front.

Luther has a very good defense and a solid freshman QB.  The defense played very well today as Coe returned a fumbled kickoff back for a TD and recovered a muffed punt return by a senior Norse WR in the end zone for the other regulation TD.  The lack of being tough in all phases of the game finally did them in.

Luther was up 10-0 at the half even though they ran out of time in the 2nd quarter with the ball at the Coe 4.

Luther also missed an extra point for the 4th time in this year. :-[  It was another bad day to be the special teams coach as Coe outscored the Norse 14-7 in that phase of the game.

The defense is playing great, you have a lead at home, and then you can't be at least average on special teams.  The buzz at the game at Waverly might have been fun next week.

So congrats to Coe for passing for the winning TD when they had not been able to throw the ball all day.  What a crazy game, but Coe has found a way to do this to the Norse in recent years.

What a great day for football in Decorah!  Hopefully all the IIAC venues today were also sunny and cool!  Luther has a beautiful campus especially in the fall.  Congrats to all the Kohawks on their win vs Luther-it was a team effort!  Sure hoping Pinckney, Breitbach, Bakke, Rozum and CJ can get healthy & be back next week!  Coe Defense-YOU ROCK!  Let's do it again next week...BEAT BV!

I believe they will all be back next week, with the exception of CJ.  His playing days appear to be over.

Yeah, KK, I heard that CJ would probably not be returning to play, too.  Bruised heart or something like that?  Didn't see him on the sidelines at Luther and was wondering if he didn't make the trip?  He's been encouraging to the other guys during previous games while he's been sidelined. Team needs that, too.    ;)

It will be interesing to see if any of those teams with a losing regular season record actually win a game in the state playoffs.

Also interesting that 7-2 Union of La Porte City gets to travel 115 miles to the Des Moines area to play a 5-4 Colo of Crestwood.  That makes a ton of sense.

Actually, Union goes northeast to play Crestwood of Cresco, which is up near Decorah.  More like an 87 mile trip (one way), which is nothing compared to the Class A Lisbon Lions, who get to make a 400 mile there-and-back trek to Northwood.  That'd take an easy 3 hours by car, so it might be around three and a half by bus, which means that those kids will undoubtedly have to get pulled out of school early and likely won't be home until at least 1:30 the next morning.

Storm Chaser

"The refs did make some questionable calls.  It did appear that there was a ton of grabbing by DB's on both sides.  Wartburg got the benefit on a couple of calls, but I don't think that was the turning point of the game.  Simpson not being able to get in from the one foot line and a complete meltdown in the secondary were what doomed the storm."

BB - Thanks for acknowledging some questionable calls -  Storm got tagged for 3 interference calls and Knights ZIP -  HUGE one and VERY lame call kept Knight drive alive on 3rd and 9 - five plays before the meltdown in the secondary.  Correct no call if made leads to Knights punt and no meltdown,  real game changer.  All of the interference calls came right in front of the Wartburg bench so kudos to Wartburg staff for working the zebras.   You are right though not getting in from the 1 foot line doesn't make for winning football on the Storms part.

I was thinking that didn't sound right school wise.  Still seems weird to have a 7-2 team travelling to a 5-4 team.  But oh well.

Big weekend next weekend with the conference title on the line.  SJU has off next weekend so maybe a couple of us who live in So. MN will have to travel to Waverly to view Luther and Wartburg.  It's not too far.  I'd like to see how good the IIAC is this year compared to that good Central team of last year.

You'll find that last year's Central team was vastly superior...

This year's Kaniggets are vulnerable and have not demonstrated a running game representative of a top contender.  They have had to resort to getting it done through the air.  But things can change in a couple of weeks and taking them lightly is highly inadvisable.  However, I think last year's Central team would have had it's way with this WC edition.

I think it's fair to say that Luther has exceeded most folks expectations and they can beat a lot teams on any given Saturday...unless you are talking about an upper echelon team.

On the other hand, the MIAC seems to seeing some of the same inversion factor as the IIAC.  It's not like the MIAC's top teams cut the same imposing figure as last year either.

That will be the game of the week in the IIAC.  It will help shape or throw things in the IIAC more up in the air.  The Knights with a win will almost be a lock to be in a tie.  They will just have to hope that BV loses along the way so they can get the AQ.  Luther is playing for a playoff spot as well so it should be a great game.

Wow -- I'm away for a weekend, and the conference falls apart!! I have to say, I was a bit surprised to see the Dutch go into OT vs. Cornell. It sounds like Cornell deserves a lot of credit for improvement, not giving up, believing they could win... that attitude obviously reflected in their play Saturday.

It sounds as the Dutch were expecting to win just by showing up. They were obviously ill-prepared for a well-prepared Ram team. How disrespectful to a hard-working Rams. It seems as though some of the Dutch fire is gone this year....

Congrats to all of the winners around the conference.

Travel has not been taken into consideration the entire season.  For 3A-8 Man, the state "assigned" non-district games.  They had us (2A) driving over 2 1/2 hours north to play a class A school.   Didn't make any sense at all, and we were able to get it changed.   Thankfully the gas prices have went down a bit, otherwise some schools might have a hard time affording all the travel.

Walston:  How many teams from the CIML made it in?  I know the MAC got a bunch in (2-3 teams with only 4 wins???).  4A in the eastern half of the state is fairly watered down.

3A-8 Man:  Still too many teams.  I think it would make more sense to have a 24 team playoff...give the 8 district winners a bye and go from there.

Great win by the Beavers on Saturday.  I did not get to catch any of the game as I was pouring 20 yards of concrete with my old man.  Nothing like driving 5 hours back to Des Moines on Friday night to help prepare the site, work all day Saturday, and drive by Sunday morning for prior commitments in Chicago, my softball team!

We still hold the post season in our hands and winning out is the only option in my book.  It will be a great week of preperation and a great game to watch this Saturday in Cedar Rapids.
