So Ole and Lena left their dairy farm near Decorah to attend a farm sale near Waverly. While walking through the herd of cows, one cow in particular caught Oles eye. He reached down to inspect the cows utter and when he squeezed her teat, the cow farted. Ole took a step back in surprise, then checked the other three quarters. Each time he pulled on a teat, the cow would fart. Ole thought this was strange, but she was a fine looking cow that would make a good addition to his herd, so he bought her and took her home. As he was unloading the cow in the barn, his neighbor Sven come over the hill. Thinking he would have a little fun with his neighbor, Ole said, "reach down and squeeze a teat on my new cow."  so Sven does, and the cow farts right on que. "Dat cow come from Waverly," Sven says. Ole was stunned. "Howd you know dat?" asked Ole. Sven replied, "cause I married a girl from Waverly.

From the "For What Its Worth" department ...

Former UD Offensive Coordinator Joe Austin got his first career head coaching victory with a last minute, 35-34 Hanover College (1-5 , 1-3 HCAC) win over Manchester College (4-2, 2-2 HCAC).  Austin has been using a freshman QB, so maybe in 4 years they will be like last year's Spartan offense.

It sounds as the Dutch were expecting to win just by showing up. They were obviously ill-prepared for a well-prepared Ram team. How disrespectful to a hard-working Rams. It seems as though some of the Dutch fire is gone this year....
I second your thoughts.  The Central team that played the game just showed up, the team that played the OT would have won without OT.  Cornell was prepared, they executed very well, they were fired up from the first drive of the game and it surely added to the fact that Central looked like arriving on the field would be enough.  I don't want to take anything away from the Rams.  They really deserved to win that game the way they played.

It looked a bit like the nice win against Coe the prior week had the Dutch believing they were back to the Central of old.  I think the Dutch had the same attitude when they played Luther.  Only problem is, apparently this team did not recognize that the Central of old got excited for every game, no matter what the other team's record.  They showed respect to the other team by going out with the A game every week and letting the subs have some quality PT in the second half.  If you disrespect the teams by not preparing or getting excited for the game, they are going to lose.  I bleed red and white, I was glad to get out of Mt Vernon with a win, but the team that deserved the win that day did not get it.

The Dutch have got to get back to getting fired up for every single game.  The regular season is only 10 games long, why can't they be fired up to play each and every one of them?

Lets not forget 4A Council Bluffs, TJ at Ottumwa, a 214 mile trip one way.
To answer BB's question, 5 of the 6 teams in our Central conf made the playoffs. Urbandale was the only team left out and they were winless in the conference.
Still were 3-1 in the non conference and our Central conference as a whole was 22-2 against non conference opponents.

Actually, Union goes northeast to play Crestwood of Cresco, which is up near Decorah.  More like an 87 mile trip (one way), which is nothing compared to the Class A Lisbon Lions, who get to make a 400 mile there-and-back trek to Northwood.  That'd take an easy 3 hours by car, so it might be around three and a half by bus, which means that those kids will undoubtedly have to get pulled out of school early and likely won't be home until at least 1:30 the next morning.

Big weekend next weekend with the conference title on the line.  SJU has off next weekend so maybe a couple of us who live in So. MN will have to travel to Waverly to view Luther and Wartburg.  It's not too far.  I'd like to see how good the IIAC is this year compared to that good Central team of last year.
I think last year's top teams all took a step down compared to last year.  Many of the bottom teams took a step up.  The talent is getting spread around the conference more evenly than in past years.  Makes for exciting conference games and poor playoff results, IMHO.

League-wise will we see the same National level achievement where our #'s 1-4 teams finish in the top ten?

My weekend barometer from last week.

Thursday - UP.  Rev. 3 plays well in 1st start at TE.  Vista freshman win 53-20.  Was also payday.

Friday - UP.  Jr. reports that he is cleared to play.  Senorita Heys reports a good day at Track practice.  Both report doing well on recent tests.  Wife lets me buy beer.

Saturday - until approximately 12:35PM PDT, UP, at which point the barometer dropped precipitously DOWN.  5 hours, 4 beers, a Belvedere martini, and a nice steak with roasted asparagus and mashed potatoes later..the barometer leveled off.   8)

Sunday - DOWN.  Reviewed the game with Jr.  The Chargers stunk.  But the barometer is on the rise later in the evening after leftover steak sandwiches and a game of Monopoly with wife and Rev. 3...I won.   ;)

It's a Bye week so we hope those that got nicked up will repair when we travel to Decorah on Nov. 8

Good to hear that your daughter is doing well.  I had thought but forgot to ask how the latest athlete in the family is doing.  How is Heys cubed doing?  How many more games does he have?

While I don't doubt that Wartburg will be the top dog to defend their title, I'm pretty sure that Coach O has a pretty good team ready to take the mat.  No reason they won't be in the Top 5 again, if not higher than last year's fourth place finish.

As stated before, Rev. 3 drew the starting nod at TE last Thursday due to injury and he performed very well.  He got singled out by the coach for his effort after the game and he even got called Alex by the PA announcer when he caught a 2 pt. conversion.

We'll see if Cinder-fella turns back into a pumpkin when the regular starter returns to action this week.  Maybe the coach will find a way to work both of them in there.  The coaches say he has the best hands on the team.  They have 3 games left, so we'll see how it goes.

Basketball is nearing so he'll jump (literally and figuratively) right to that after the season.

So who's it shaping up that our Playoff rep will play in the 1st round?

I say so what if UW-W actually finally lost one...I'm going to reserve judgement on their "demise" until after the 2nd (?) UW-EC game.

Am I reading that right...they are playing EC twice?  Boy, and the folks in the NWC whine about not getting D3 teams to play them.

How about the nad shown by EC to schedule UW-W twice in one season.

Anyway, to me the tiers are still MUC, UW-W and MH-B; then CCIW champ, WIAC #2, OAC #2, Muhls, Wabash, W&J, Hardin-Simmons next; then the crowd.

IMHO - If you aren't MUC, UW-W or MH-B, you aren't going to be D3 champ.
