A couple of us SJU MIAC folks are going down to Waverly to take part in the big game.   I've only been there once 8 years ago and did not really take in the good bars, bakeries, etc.  Are there any places there like Jaarsma's in Pella?  Waverly Police force had better double the flat foots as Brice, Big Fella and I will be there.  :)

Seeing that a Knight win would eliminate everyone except BV, do the rest of us a favor and throw your support behind the Norse. The only place I have been to in Waverly is the sports bar a block from the stadium. Joes I believe.

There are 3 bar/restaurant places within a block or two of campus, and I'm sure they'll all be open at 11:00 for the first round of college football games on TV (including the Gophers against Northwestern).

Joe's KnightHawk is just off of campus to the south and has been a Waverly staple for years.  Not a real extensive menu, but they have the essentials:  burgers, wings, and pizza.  If you go there, definitely try the cheese fries.

The OP (Other Place) is about a block to the east of Joe's and on the other side of Bremer Avenue, Waverly main street.  They are best known for their pizza (for good reason) but their sandwiches are pretty good too.  They have a few more TVs than Joe's and the beer selection is a bit better.

The Fainting Goat is the furthest east property in a strip mall across Bremer Ave. from Joe's.  This place only opened up two years ago, but is already doing very well.  Beer selection is probably equal to the OP and there's more variety in the Goat's menu than either of the other two.  They have a projection screen on the wall of the "bar area" that will be tuned into one of the early games that day.  I can't say I've ever had a bad meal there, but the boneless buffalo bites were pretty darn good.

I never was much into bakeries.  Bars and restaurants are another thing.  Close to campus you will find some places to quench your thirst after a road trip down from the north country.  Within a mediocre golf shot from campus you will find Joe's KnightHawk, The Other Place, and The Fainting Goat.  All three are on Bremer Avenue (the main drag thru town).  Joe's and OP are stand alone buildings about a 1/2 block from one another.  The Goat is in a mini-mall across the street from Joe's.

If the weather holds, I assume there will be quite a bit of tailgating going on near Walston-Hoover Stadium.  Both the Wartburg and Luther fans have been known to enjoy an adult beverage or three before kickoff.  ;D

This will be one of the few times in the past 10 to 15 years that this game means more than a rivalry game.  It should be a great atmosphere.  Regardless what you read or hear, the Luther/Wartburg rivalry is like siblings fighting among themselves.  As a Wartburg fan I reserve the right to say anything nasty about Luther, but nobody else better pick on them.  ;)

Ooops! I guess I just confirmed what sportsknight had already posted.

LCNorse

Probably going to make the trip to the horrible town of Waverly this weekend to watch the LC/Burg game that actually means something other then just the rivalry. The past few years it has been a pretty good game for the most part. Expecting a smash mouth game, Luthers D-line has dominated pretty much every team they have played just hoping that the offense can become more consistent and that the Norse can take away the mistakes on special teams.

This will be my first Luther/Wartburg game I've been to that I'm not playing in, how does Wartburg handle adult beverages while tailgating? Ran into some problems last year for the LC/burg b-ball game(as a Luther student) putting some back before the game...assuming its like LC and during football season everyone just looks the other way.

Actually, Union goes northeast to play Crestwood of Cresco, which is up near Decorah.  More like an 87 mile trip (one way), which is nothing compared to the Class A Lisbon Lions, who get to make a 400 mile there-and-back trek to Northwood.  That'd take an easy 3 hours by car, so it might be around three and a half by bus, which means that those kids will undoubtedly have to get pulled out of school early and likely won't be home until at least 1:30 the next morning.

I thought Emmetsburg was a 2A school?

I thought Maquoketa Valley was a 2A school as well.

E'burg and AP are on track to meet in quarterfinals. They are the only 1A schools that received 1st place votes in the final poll of the season.

Wow, slow news day in here.

After last week's debackle against Cornell, it would appear the Dutch need something to re-ignite the fire... some locker room material, if you will. Something to re-inspire focus and determination.

It may be time to revisit Loras' goals for the season....

In spring practice, they stated that one of their goals was to beat Central. Talk about determination...they want to march into our house and beat us on our home turf, before our hometown fans.

I'd like to say we were going to stop them dead in their tracks, too, but we are going to have to play with a hell of a lot more determination than we showed the first three quarters last week. We have the skill -- it's Loras, for goodness sake -- but do we have the heart?

I think you nailed this post on the head.  I think the Dutch have the talent to be a good to great team.  They need to find the fire, the kind of determination or will to win.  I think that has been missing from this team.  Time for some players to step up lead and if need be to load them on his back and carry them to victory.  The past teams seemed to have that.  Not just one guy but a different guy every week that seemed to will the team to victory.  Eleven guys willing to do what it takes and maybe one or two guys on the field to make a difference on every play.
