Right now Loras has 2 conference losses and W'burg has 1 conference loss, so you must anticipate Loras losing two or three of their last three games to finish at or below .500.

The MVP will not come from a team with a .500 or worse record.
He would be the only one that has stats comparable to Yordi, but if it happens that one guy's team is  the conf champ, and the other's finishes in the middle or bottom of the conf, who do you think is the conf MVP?

\If there is a disapointment this season I say its in Waverly where they have been all over the board, but less than dominating.  I think all would agree we looked for Yordi to tear the conference apart.  This has not happened.
I think it has happened. Check the stats.
Yordi has a higher completion percentage, 500 more yards, and more than double the touchdowns of the second best passer in the conference. If the Knights win out and share the conf title, he is a shoe-in to be league MVP, unless they give it to Vetter who is averaging over 100 yards recieving/game.
I don't think I'd use the word "shoe-in" at this point.  The difference between Yordi and the 2nd best QB is similar to the difference between McGrew and the 2nd best RB.  Plus, McGrew punts, returns kicks, and returns punts.  I think if the choice had to be made today, it would be a virtual dead heat.  Both play Luther in the last three weeks, and I think how each performs against that tough D will end up being the deciding factor.

POY talk got me thinking...

When is the last time a defensive player won conference MVP?

I agree that Yordi has the best stats so far.  The one thing that you have to look at with his 500 yard lead.  He has one more game than all the others.  So his lead is maybe more like 250-300 yards depending on the outcome.  This weekends games will help sort out or may even jumble up the mix more.

I was looking at IIAC conference records.  I would like to hear from a Simpson historian.
Almost unbelievable; Roger Thompson of Simpson had a 93 yard punt against UIU in 1968.  Were they playing in a tornado?  :o

His average yards/game is still much higher than the second place guy. And yes, I anticipate Loras losing a couple here down the stretch.

Did Sanger win? If so, I have no doubt he was the last defensive POY.
I think Jackson won it in '01 and '02
Donnenworth in a travesty in '03 (sorry to bring that up again)
I think Brannen won it in '04 and then the Central guys have had a stranglehold on it until last year.

Fixed it for you.

barring any HUGE statistical games from any Dutchmen, no Central player will be MVP this year.

I hit the stash of Halloween candy and my Dove chocolate had the following message:  "Remind yourself that it's okay not to be perfect."  Guess the Dove chocolate company has been reading my posts on the board lately.   ;D ;D ;D

Maybe the Dutch are doing as well as they can this year.  Maybe Cornell and Luther just did a better job of executing their game plan.  If Luther wins on Saturday, maybe I will feel a bit better about that loss.  If Cornell is executing better than Central, we have our work cut out for us.  We have three difficult games left. Loras and BV are both doing better than expected and Simpson is always a game where you never know what will happen.  At least there are glimmers of greatness in most of our games.  Brondyke is consistently great, Wong & Wilkin from SE Polk have played well, Vermeer is usually very good.  As long as one of the QB's is on and we have the right one playing, things turn out well.  And we have had some key injuries to deal with in Snead, Baethke, Leuschen among others.  Hope Ver Steeg is good to go this week.

My preseason pick was for a Wartburg guy.  It was kind of a bust.  I don't think the Wartburg D was any where near what any one thought they would be.

DF2004:

You may be correct that the Wartburg D is not where we thought they might be.  I didn't do a complete analysis on this, but the Knight D, in conference games, is giving up around 16 pts./game.  This isn't as good as some recent years, but it isn't awful.  As I try calculating in my head, I think this is close to the league best.  Of course not everyone has played all the other teams so we may be comparing apples and oranges.  I would guess this year's edition of the defense is spending more time on the field since the Wartburg O hasn't exactly been putting together long time consuming drives.  At this point of the season, I'm willing to give the defense the benefit of the doubt.

DF2004:

OK, perhaps I should look at time of possession, because as I investigate further I discover the Wartburg O is averaging about 6 more points a game than they have in the 3 previous seasons.  With the running game woes it seems the offense is struggling.  I could be wrong, perhaps Wartburg is just having to rely on Mr. Yordi's arm and quick strikes.  I am shocked that the offensive points/game is as high as it is so far this season.  I guess this talk of MVP Yordi isn't all that far fetched.
