Huge game for the Knights this week against the red headed step-children from Decorah.

prediction: 24-17 WB- too tough at home- yordi throws for 250 with 2 td's

meanwhile, I thought I'd let Jim speak about turnovers &  playoffs.

Less than half the team has red hair!

Number 1 in the IIAC and #17 in the nation in pass efficiency vs number 1 in the IIAC and number 3 in the nation in pass defense efficiency. Should be a good one. If Wartburg scores 24 points, they will win. If Yordi goes for 250 and 2 TDs they probably win. He will have to be patient because he won't hit 62% of his passes, and I don't see Vetters getting any 50 yarders.

The 5 TD passes Luther has given up this year are the 25 yarder to Coe in OT last week, a 13 yarder to Simpson, a 10 yarder to St Olaf, and a 7 and 3 yards to Dubuque.

Wartburg - Luther note:
Starting @ 9am Saturday AM the IIAC Conference JV volleyball tournament will be taking place in the W. So in addition to full house for F-ball game there will be parking taken, before MOST get to the game.  Good news the lot west of 12th street is open.

It doesn't always happen in rivalry games, but I think the Norse Defense will show up on Saturday and do what they have been doing for most of the season.  The offense needs to play somewhat like what I saw in the Central game (no mistakes and some big plays), while the special teams need to play BY FAR the best they have played all year.  Both defenses played well in the game in Decorah last year, but some key Norse errors that were not forced (accidently snapping the ball to an up man on the punt team deep in Norse territory as the big example) turned the game.  The only time that Luther won in recent years was when Wartburg could not protect the ball in 2005 and Sherden got lots of chances to keep running that day.

Can the Norse Offense get yards, eat some clock, continue to protect the ball and score around 21 points?

Can the special teams avoid some crazy train wreck play(s)?

Why Luther has a shot (statistics from IIAC games only):
#1 in scoring defense (14.8 ppg)
#1 in pass defense efficiency
#1 in turnover margin (14 gained, 5 lost)
#1 in red zone defense (opponents are 6-15 with 5 TDs)
#3 in opponent 1st downs
#2 in time of possession
#2 in sacks against (6 in 5 games)

Why they are clearly not favored:
One win against the Knights this decade in 2005
#7 in scoring offense
Averaging 3 yards per carry (Wartburg is averaging 2.7 but has been throwing well this year)
#8 in total offense
RB not even by committee but rather just who has a jersey number between 20 and 49 and is not currently injured ;D
#8 in punt returns if the ball is actually retained
#9 in PAT kicking with only 5 makes in 9 attempts
Wartburg has a better league record since they won last week while Luther lost to Coe
Wartburg is also in the upper part of the league in punting and kicking
Wartburg is #1 in pass efficiency, pass offense, and 1st downs.
Wartburg is #2 in pass efficiency defense, turnover margin, and scoring offense

At least the Norse aren't wrestling against Miller's Knight wrestlers! ;D  That will come later this year though. :-\

Yes Floyd, and maybe covering their tight end deep down the middle of the field will help also.

Looking at the Sub-state games from the other night, it looks like there are cases for its existance. Sure some of the travel distances were tough, but I think Dubuque teams and Class A District 6 teams are pretty happy this opening round exists.  The MAC is probably a little upset with the decision now.  In the big picture, it was a waste of time for some, i.e. CR Washington & WDM Valley, but a great opportunity for others. It probably won't make a difference in the final outcome of the playoffs, but the road to title might be a little more legitimate than it has been.

Floyd, have some confidence.  Luther is #1 is pass defense and Wartburg relies very heavily on the pass.  Maybe they are rated so well in passing efficiency because they have not yet run into the best pass defense.  I've been talking a lot about attitude lately, if Luther goes into this with the belief that they can win, as they did against Central, they will do it.  Wartburg lost to a team that Luther beat.

Believe in yourselves, Norse.

Free Parking @ AEN Home, only 1 mile from Walston-Hoover-after 1 block up hill, down hill all the way.  AEN Jr. will be home so you'd better plan on 2X the beverage parking charge.

We're off to see Ms. Neumann @ Bethel for "family weekend". We'll try to catch some of the game on stream.

Wart fans, what ever happened to the Jones kid that played RB last year. I thought he looked like he would be the guy this year after VanRees graduated. I still can't understand how few carries VanRees got last year. In my opinion, every time Suckow carried the ball when VanRees was healthy, was advantage to your opponent.

Ah, you remember that as well!  The Knight TE, the punt snap, and a couple of bad Norse passes to kill drives without any pressure are my bad memories of the game last year.  I am sure there was a poor punt return moment in there as well. :(

The Wartburg TE was a good player.  Those other things had a lot more to do with why Luther was a 5-5 team.  Not making adjustments for the TE might also be why Luther was 5-5.
