The origins of the Beaver as Buena Vista's mascot go back to the early 1900s, when the football team was called the "BVers".  In the spring of 1921, a Buena Vista student combined that nickname with then-popular soft drink "Bevo" to create the nickname "the Beavers".
In the 1940s through 1960s, the Beaver mascot was called Mr. Chips and Bucky, but eventually he became known as Buford T. Beaver.

So technically, the BV Beavers, aren't really "Beavers."  They are a combination of two words, just like the Kohawks.

Correct, Kohawk Krazy!  This point just passed several feet over Klopenhiemer's head.   ;D
Partly named for a soft drink "Bevo" and the moniker "BVers"  = "Bevors"  aka *Beavers*.

Go Kohawks!  Beat the Bevors!   ;D

Or is it the Bevoers? Fitting for an institution that insists on mispronouncing "buena."
4 IIAC football championships
8 NCAA football playoff appearances
13 straight wins over Cornell in the oldest football rivalry west of the Mississippi

Easy Charlie....Isnt it about time for you to puff up like a big rooster and try to show off?  Anyone who went there or graduated from there  know how to pronounce the name.  Its the other idiots that do not have a clue.  I hope your season of sultry continues tomorrow.

Just wanna show a little love and give a big "shout out" to the Kohawks!  Tomorrow is the last game  :( within the friendly confines of Clark Field for the seniors.  Want to extend "kudos" to #2, #18, #41, #47, #53,  #94, #99 -from the dark side.  I have to say it again: You guys rock!Let's shake things up on Saturday, Kohawks!  Beat BV!
Seriously, who names their team after primarily nocturnal, semi-aquatic rodents known for building dams??    :o

Best of luck and let's all hope for an injury free Saturday.  Go Kohawks!

Hey, at (space) least a 5 year old know (knows would be the correct tense) what the hell our mascott (only one "t", Sport) is.  What the hell is a KoHawk anyway. (ever heard of a question mark?)  Oh wait...You will just lead me to some historical site about how Coe wanted to me (I think you mean "be") like Iowa and all that malarky.  At (space) least ours is original.  I hope the Beavers mop the floor with the KoHawks tomorrow.  (AND I hope you didn't get an English degree from BV.)
FYI:
The History of the Kohawk
In 1922, the Coe Athletic Council began the quest for a mascot.  ...C.W. Perkins, chairman of the German Dept., developed the Kohawk name.  In a letter, he explained that "Hawks" represent Iowa, the Hawkeye State.  In a Native American language, "ko" means "like the", so the nickname means "like the hawks".  His suggestion was put to a student vote and was accepted in November 1922.

Here is the illustrious history of YOUR mascot:

Though the name might have came from something like the BVer's at least it evolved into a real creature and not some mythical beast like a kohawk, oh wait similar to a duhawk.  You guys must be horses of the same color!!!

Not to pick on the Kohawks but I think the consensus on this board is that Cornell is about where they were picked to finish.  I would say right now at least Coe is below where they were picked.  I think UD is as much of disapointment as Coe.  I thought UD would be down but not in 8th place.  Luther is my biggest surprise so far BV ranks up there as well.  The jury is out on Loras.

I plan on having a few BV'ers on the rocks tomorrow at Mahoney's Irish Pub before the game.

Anyone care to join me?
I'm so happy 'cause today I found my friends. They're in my head.  I'm so ugly, that's okay, 'cause so are you!

Here's another factoid that I'm sure will make you proud, K.

"Bevo was a non-alcoholic malt beverage, or near beer, brewed in the United States by Anheuser-Busch. It enjoyed its greatest success during prohibition, when beer was illegal."

Not even named after a REAL beer!!!  Now that is just plain disgusting!
Go Kohawks!  Beat the Bevoers or Bevors or water rodents or whatever they wish to be known as...

Are you buying???  ;D

Even if you are buying, my wife has told me she is shopping all day with her mother tomorrow and I will be watching our kids.  Don't think taking them to Mahoney's would make my wifes list of acceptable babysitting activities!!!  I might, if I can convince them it is fun, get them to help me with some yard work.  If not, I will just tell them to go upstairs and have fun destroying their rooms while I hang out downstairs having a drink and watching the Hawks play and listening to the UD game.  Afterwards I will attempt to clean the house up before my wife gets home.  If the house isn't clean enough for her standards I at least hope I can get wins out of the Hawkeyes and Spartans ::)

Here's a preview story of Saturday's Wartburg-Luther game. No. 1 offense statistically vs. No. 1 defense. Should be fun to watch!

Wow dog you are under some strict orders.  I feel sorry for you.

Charlie,

You are wrong once again.  Even if Cornell was picked to finish last, most people figured that they would be a suprise team.  Picking Cornell last was as easy as picking Wartburg in first this year.  That being said, you are still the disapointment of the conference.

Webster,

Thanks for another English lesson.  Do you really think I care how things are typed on a message board?  You are one of 3 things,  anal retentive, not married, or your hate your wife to take the time to edit my posts.

In the words of Lee Corso, "Not so fast my friend."

The Kohawks still have two games left in the season.  They can just as easily win both as they can lose both games.  If they pull off a win in both games, they very well could be looking at a third or fourth place finish, which wouldn't really be too big of a disappointment.

I'm out until after the game later today.  I've got a feeling the Kohawks are more than ready for this game.
