How does the MIAC and WIAC do it I am not familiar with how they do it.
The WIAC has 40 all conference players on offense between 1st team, 2nd team and HM. 37 on D and 8 sportsmanship. 85 total for an 8 team league. The MIAC is worse yet, if memory serves me. I guess there no complaining that way.

Loras' McGrew MVP

Tradition holds -- Willis is screwed again. So was Yordi. Interesting. Anti-Wartburg bias at work again?
I think your just trying to stir the pot a little. I don't know what else McGrew could have done for his team. I wouldn't have had a problem with Yordie either. I guess when it's that close, I would vote for the Senior. Same with COY, both were good choices. If there is a conspiracy against Willis, he must be partially responsible since there are at least 4 new voters since the last time he was up for it.

Eh, I'm too lazy to stir the pot. I just think it's interesting that all four times that Willis has guided his team to a conference championship, he has missed out on this award. Interesting.

Anderson and McGrew are very deserving, and I don't want to take anything away from them at all. But you asked what more they could have done.... maybe bring a conference championship trophy home to their respective schools?

That's not what your first statement suggested... ???

I for one, think they hit the nail on the head.  Congratulations to both Coach Anderson and McGrew.

tribute

Just wanted to stop in and say hello to everyone. I don't spend a lot of my time posting, but I think that almost everyone on the site speaks with a great deal of insight. I have followed the IIAC closely since the fall of '99. The basis for my post at this point is two-fold.
First, I am going to be making the trip from the Minneapolis/St Paul area to Stevens Point for this weekends game. (hopefully return in time to get a ticket to the Minnesota/Iowa game). As much as it pains me to say, I hope the knights can pull out a win. I hope I can see great game and maybe enjoy an adult beverage with a few fans from Wavetown.
Secondly, I would like to reflect a little on this year in the IIAC. I was speaking to another observer early in the year, may have been after the first week of conference play. We came to the conclusion that unlike most years there was no team that was a clear cut favorite, even stating that winner would have two losses. We were thinking at that point that there could be a surprise team that represent the IIAC in the playoffs. However, fast forward to the end of the year and traditional conference power survived the balanced conference, which is testament to there ability to find a way win.
I believe it was thunderbolt who previously suggested the youth at Quarterback played an integral role in the conferences struggles. I would say I concur with his assessments on youth being a factor. However, I very slightly by stating the nature of the college game has evolved over that past few years. The game is now more dependent of the Quarterbacks ability to win you few games rather simply managing. Look at the past few years in the IIAC, Connell (sp) was difference maker, who had the ability to make a big play when needed. I witnessed the same thing in the MIAC this year. Yordi had a solid season, but was clearly was not at that level. The future is bright for many of the young Qb's i saw in action this season. As an offensive minded guy, I await the future.

I just saw an imbalance when #1 Defense gets 2  and #6 defense get 6  - seemed out of whack.  And I do find it psychologically easier to pick on Wartburg :)
You can take your "#1 defense" in yards and I'll take my "#1" defense in points and I'll win that battle 10 years in a row.

Tomorrow at this time I'll be east of Winona on I90. Might even have downed a couple Bloody Marys by then.

Here is a question for the Kohawks.  Do you think that Brockmeyer benefitted and got first team by having Breitbach back there with him?  By this I mean did teams avoid Breitbach and try to pick on Brockmeyer and he benefitted that way?  I don't remember him in the Central game.
I think they each missed a game due to injury, too.  Brockmyer-maybe the Simpson game and Tommy-maybe the Luther game?  Anyone remember for sure?

well, Tommy was a CB and Brockmeyer was a Saftey - you can't really not throw their way, they could be lined up on the same side depending on the offensive set you know.

Here is something to think about to guys.  In recent memory there have been two times that the COY has not gone to the conference champion.  2004 and now in 2008.

Both of these years came down to the last week of the season or the second to last week of the season with the eventual conference champion not controlling their own destiny.

The COY is voted on by the coaches in the conferences.  In 2004 and 2008 the Beavers did not pull through in the end the but did have outstanding season.  Thus leading to some controversy on who is the COY.

If you take a look at past season there might have been some type of conference race, but it was pretty vanilla regarding the outcome.  I do not know if this plays a factor in the final decisions or not, but this is something that I was thinking about while reading the board this morning.

Will Wartburg or Stevens Point video stream OR audio webcast the game tomorrow ?

Depends how recent your memory is. In 2003, Wartburg rolled through the conference and the COY was from the second place team
There was a 3-way tie in 2002 and Willis didn't get a sniff of the COY.

If I'm correct the Coaches vote for COY...maybe the conference coaches don't like him. I have nothing to base that off of other then just an assumption that he could have easily been it a number of times and hasn't got it. I don't really know but I'm sure there is some reason that coaches aren't voting for him...I know he turned me off of Wartburg during my recruiting processes, I just personally didn't want to play for a guy like that...that was a personal thing with me...he gets a ton of talent and I was very surprised to hear how often wartburg fans believe he has been "jimped" out of COY honors.

SK,

I was surprised to see Botembe not on it as well.  I thought he was great last year.  This year he didn't seem to be making the plays against Central that he did last year.  Maybe that is why he just didn't perform at the level he did last year.
I'm not good with names, but wasn't it Botembe who drilled Bandow and made him throw an interception with 9 seconds left, when I was still counting on one more completion (or pass interference call) that would have set up the game winning field goal?  After the second pass interference call in that drive and up to Bandow getting rocked and throwing the pick, I would have bet you a dozen Dutch letters that Central was going to beat Wartburg.  After the pick, the magic was gone.

His quiet confidence and intensity isn't for everyone.
As Warthog's chart showed-no conference coach in the last 20 years has won as much with as little recognition as Coach Willis.
