I give up trying to figure this stuff out.  Some teams people just love to hate. Oklahoma, U of Miami, Georgetown (basketball), Oakland Raiders, NY Yankees, WDM Dowling and Wartburg.

Add Hawkeyes and Huskers to my list. You're still OK in my book though Warthog.

It would be nice of the other state school in Ames would at least be competitve.  I am not going to get into the Iowa vs. ISU debate.  I root for the Hawks during that game.  The rest of the season I pray that they both play well so that our state gets some recognition and we all dont look like a bunch of corn fed hicks.

Iowa might get favorable attention but 120 miles seperates two teams heading in two different directions.

I know that this is a d 3 board but I know Walston Hoover is a big Iowa State fan.  After one down year with Coach Mc and two horrible years with Chizek, are you Iowa State fans satisfied with Jamie Pollard and the direction of the Clones?  Do you think that if things don't improve that 1 Chizek should go and if that is a yes should Pollard hit the road with him?

You bring up some good points.  The time for yelling after the game is way past time.  You don't fire up the guys after they have just lost a game.  A coach needs to express himself and coach but I don't think that the time is after the game to yell at the players.  Say what you need to say in an adult clear way and then move on.  If Coach B yelled at his players the way he yelled at the refs I can imagine that parents were upset.

Maybe he was yelling about the their excessive celebration penalty? That pretty much cost the game for them or set them up to lose b/c then they missed a extra point into the wind from 15 yards back from where they should have been. Watching that game on the webcast it didn't look like they gave up in that game. I have always had tremendous respect for those guys up there and what they were able to accomplish.

Two thoughts ...

One ... it will be interesting to see if former UD Coach B and his son (reportedly a D-1 prospect) end up at the same school in September.

Two ... Spartan fans now have to go through another transition time ... which means more losses.

This might explain why the Spartan sideline wasn't as exuberant as I've come to expect when Coe played there. Visitor attendance outnumbered home fans too. I figured it was the cold, but maybe the writing was on the wall.

Point taken, but in the heat of the battle you can not address every play or turn of events.  Thus why yelling usually comes into play after the games and in the meeting rooms.

I am sure all of the fromer players on this board have seen some pretty wild crap during meetings.  Its not because they hate or dislike, its because they know the player is capable of so much more.

The problem I have with parrents getting mad about yelling is that they never really know the whole story.  If it is abusive and excessive then they can be upset, but if the yelling is out of good natured love for the team, sport, and school, then I have no problem with it.

I was raised in an old school household where actions were brought to the forefront.  I am sure some of the older folks on this board remember the punishments that they received/survived.

My feeling is that if you are going to let a great man coach a team for 10 years and then run him off, you might as well let Gene have the helm for 10 years, see what he can do, and then start over again.

Let me just say a couple things regarding the coaching change at UD.

First, I truley believe that Coach B and his staff gave everything they could to UD and the Spartan Football program. They accomplished what no coaches were able to do in nearly 2 decades and that is to be commended to the highest degree. When they took over, there was a history of losing, low numbers, and UD was in a time of transformation as a university. Personally, I am in a tough situation. Respect and Loyalty. I respect Coach B and his staff and what they have done for the college I love and support. They are competitors in every sense of the word and will pick themselves up and make the best of this situation I am sure. When one door closes, another one opens and each one of them knows that. As he said in the article, he and his staff will be coaching somewhere in 2009 I am sure. I wish them the best and thank them for the past 8 years.

On the same note, I also respect the administration at UD. UD has made some tough decisions over the years and I believe that President Bullock and others have the best interest of the entire campus community in mind. I am loyal to UD always. I believe good things are to come in the future of spartan athletics.

It is a time of transition and change and many times change hurts but usually it is good for all involved.

(I realize this is a D3 message board but...)   ;)
I'd like to wish the Best of Luck to the 2 NAIA Iowa colleges in their playoffs tomorrow.  St. Ambrose plays USF in Sioux Falls and Morningside plays Baker (KS) in Sioux City.  Also Best of Luck to the Knights in their game w/UWSP.
Safe travels to all!
In the words of Bobby Knight: "I mean, I deeply hope we beat their ass today."

did anyone see this?

UW-Stevens Point's offensive line averages 6-foot-2 and 302 pounds.

Now those are some biggins.  without knowing anything about SP, I'm going to assume that they are going to try and pound the ball down WB's throat today with those really skinny, athletic lineman.  That's something like a 70 lb avg advantage on our D-line.  Hopefully speed kills today against those hogs.

Also, I will take wins and a Championship over COY award any day.  And I know Coach Willis will too.
If that award should  boil down to expectations for the year,  then I'm just fine with expecting to contend for the championship Every year.

you can debate all you want that coaches think he's a prick, he does this, he does that.
Bottom Line: He can flat out coach, win games and recruit.   3 qualities that aren't the easiest to come by in this league.

Best of luck to my Knights today.  I'm really hoping for a win not only for them but for the IIAC.
and should they lose, i really hope that some of you( who I'm sure can't wait )
don't come on here and bash them for not representing the conference, etc.

The difference is the old man won games and took them to bowl games.  He even got them their first bowl win.  How long do you let him keep losing?  Do you let him keep losing for 10 years?  Then do you let the leader of the down hill slide stay?  Pollard being the leader.

Actually, they have been much more effective throwing the ball during the season - passing for 2338 yards, rushing for 770 yards - however, their O-line matched up against some big and athletic D-lines in the WIAC week-in, week-out. Their leading ball carrier, Mike Ferron has only 405 net yards on 123 attempts.  Look for QB Jared Beckwith trying to hook-up with WR Jared Jenkins (72 catches) and TE Brad Kalsow (74 catches). The Beckwith to Jenkins combo has been hot of late...they may try to establish the run against an undersized Wartburg defensive front, but look for the Pointers to try to throw the ball to move down the field.

No real blowouts.

I would consider the 42-6 loss to Loras a blowout.

Yeah, good point.  It's just us older Spartan fans can remember the old days where a 42-6 loss would be followed up by a 67-0 loss, not a 35-26 loss which is what happened this year.  Also, in the old  days we didn't take the conference champ into OT on their field.
