Bring your can openers, because the Knights are going have some containers of WhipWhop-Ass with them.

-  The Fighting Scots' highest national finish in any sport came at the 2007 National Outdoor Track Championships, where they finished third.  Comparatively, Wartburg has won 7 national team titles in the past 13 years.  Can you elaborate on those national titles for the non-burg fans?

6 Wrestling, 1 girls outdoor track.

Most are wrestling. There is a girls track for sure, possibly a girls indoor track, not sure. Might have been a cross country title in there somewhere.

Cue up the old SportsCenter music, because its time for a little Monmouth College "Did You Know?"

-  Monmouth was founded on April 18, 1853 (a year after Wartburg), and the school still celebrates that date as "Founders Day."  Classes are cancelled for a day of celebration and an honors convocation.  Sounds a bit like Wartburg's Outfly, but with a convo.

-  Monmouth was one of the first college nationally to admit women and became a center of the women's sorority movement.  Pi Beta Phi was founded at Monmouth in 1867, with Kappa Kappa Gamma following in 1870.

-  Monmouth has won the last two Midwest Conference men's all-sports trophies.

-  The Fighting Scots' highest national finish in any sport came at the 2007 National Outdoor Track Championships, where they finished third.  Comparatively, Wartburg has won 7 national team titles in the past 13 years.  Can you elaborate on those national titles for the non-burg fans?

-  The Monmouth-Knox football rivalry is the 6th oldest in the nation.  The teams traditionally played on Thanksgiving for the Bronze Turkey trophy.  The trophy has been stolen at various times in the series' history, which dates back to 1888, including a six year stretch where it was buried underneath Monmouth's old indoor track.

TME:  I saw that as I was rereading what I had written.  Thanks for the fix.

The pipeband routine is mainly pre-game these days.  If they are still on campus this weekend, they will come out about 20 minutes before kick-off and parade around the track.  Then, they fire up the pipes once more as the Good Guys come back out onto the field.  Pretty cool and unique.

The halftime entertainment has been replaced with the relatively new MC marching band, which is actually pretty large and doesn't sound half bad.

Why are the lyrics from "Dancin in the street" starting to pop into my head.  Damn!

6 Wrestling, 1 girls outdoor track.

Do you still offer wrestling?  I'm guessing that is a fairly small DIII national tourney these days.

Sweet, a marching band.
Do they parade through the lots ahead of time.

Doing a quick count on ncaa.org I got 93 participating D3 institutions.

#1 out of 93 is a pretty darn good percentile.   ;)  Kudos!  The last wrestling coach MC had, before eliminating the program, is a cool guy and fairly well known in collegiate wrestling circles.  He certainly did some good things at Monmouth, relatively speaking. http://www.monm.edu/Sportsinfo/releases/2008/olson.01-24-08.htm

The marching band does the usual drum-cadence-thing as they get close to the field.

Monmouth has won the last FOUR all-sports trophies in the MWC for the men. My class graduated being the only one to win this for 4 years straight.

The IIAC is usually well represented in the national polls - usualy 5 or 6 teams in the top 20

Waterloo Courier article on Knights football
"Knights eye shot to make history"

http://wcfcourier.com/articles/2008/11/25/sports/local/10795371.txt

"In a few short weeks, the Knights have gone from a team needing help to win the Iowa Conference championship to one that could do something that hasn't previously been done in the program's history.

Going into Saturday's game at 14th-ranked Monmouth (Ill.), Wartburg is seeking consecutive victories in the NCAA Division III playoffs for the first time."

FYI for non-IIAC folk. Waterloo is 20 miles south and does some coverage of Wartburg + Knights athletics.

7 of the top 23 are from IIAC. 11/19/08
1 Wartburg
4 Coe
9 Luther
12 Cornell
18 U of Dbq
19 Loras
23 BV

Wartburg Head coach Jim Miller came to Wartburg in 1991. Since then, his teams have compiled a 304-28-3 dual meet record, won 16 consecutive Iowa Conference championships, won six national championships since 1996, and placed first or second in the nation 14 of the past 16 years. Wartburg has also reeled off a remarkable string of 122 consecutive dual wins against Iowa Conference competition, dating back to 1994, and has reached the 20-win dual mark in each of the last four years. Wartburg owns four NWCA Division III National Duals championships (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007).

While we are on other sports, congrats to Loras soccer for making the Final 4.

High school girls.  College women.  It is an important distinction.
