historymajor,

Aren't you being a bit presumptious? Or was that a bit tongue in cheek?

Coach Fredenburg is quoted in the Sunday Abilene Reporter-News as follows about the Saturday game with McMurry:

"I think the thing that has really bothered me just personally from the last two times we've played them, it's been reported that they outplayed us," he said. "They wanted to prove they were better than us.
"That's never been the case, nor have we ever voiced that concern or that thought. And to really substantiate where we are as a football team and as a program today, it was a sweet win."

Since it's being argued that McMurry was beaten by the wind as much as by UMHB a week ago, to really substantiate how good you are, and how good the ASC is, you guys need to beat Wesley on Saturday!  Go for it!

Just for the record, in case anyone thought differently, UMHB played in the same wind...I was there...I saw it.  The coaches AND the team were out there.  ;)
And if I am a UMHB fan, then I could not have asked for a more perfect day for a game against McMurry.  ;)

Oh Ralph, you so funny. We've played teams in fair weather and bad weather, remember, we did beat Mt. Union in the snow.  ;)

I still can't figure why Mumme didn't plan for that and elect the wind so that he could determine how the wind was with or against them in the fourth.

No, not funny. I think that I am very consistent.

I think that UMHB's style of play works great in cold weather climates.  You had enough passing game to offset the the running game that the CRU fans laud.  As for the gently reminding the Mount Union fans of UMHB win in Alliance, in the snow and scoring 17 points in the 4th while shutting them out, I took that opportunity to do so last week.   ;)

I think that the pass/the Air Raid/the spread is especially vulnerable to inclement weather conditions. I like your chances with the grind-it-out I formation if you have to go to Alliance again.  However, I think that you face the toughest game of the season in Wesley.  McSweeny looks like he may be the best QB we ASC fans have seen this season.

As for taking the wind in the 3rd quarter, we were 2-3 scores down (16 points)  We cannot allow UMHB to get any farther ahead or there would not be any 4th quarter rally.  We absolutley had to shut you down in the 3rd qtr, which we did. I thought that they play was dead on our fumble early in the 4th qtr If we drive for a score, then the game is still tight.

I also think this will be the toughest match up of the year for the Cru. But the good news is, its gonna be cold and windy for sure, with a good chance of rain. Not to say that i dont like our chances in a dry game, but it would be a definite Crusader advantage this Saturday if its similar to last week. I think if we get through Wesley, we should have as good a chance as any year before to break the "Purple Reign".

If there is anything Wesley knows about weather, it is wet and windy.  The Nor'easters we get here in Delaware create some very nasty and cold weather.  The Salisbury game was an example of all the above!  Check the bottom of the box score for the game and you will find this:

Weather: Build an ark
Temperature: 45
Wind: NNE 25

I don't think UMHB will have any advantages this weekend with the wet weather on the way.  As mentioned above, if Wesley used a spread offense, I would be really concerned, but they don't.  The game should be pretty evenly matched, IMHO.

I think UMHB and St. Thomas could be considered "purple powers" too.  They've both been consistently ranked in the top 5 the last few years.

I had assumed Wesley ran some type of spread by looking at McSweeny's numbers.  What is their base formation?  What running plays do they hang their hat on?  How does McSweeny get so many carries?
Anything that you ardently desire, vividly imagine, totally believe and enthusiastically pursue will inevitably come to pass !!!

No one questions either team's place in the national elite, but until they've been in six consecutive Stagg Bowls and have won a collective 13 titles they will have to be considered among "other teams that wear purple".

Agree with Teamski, the weather will not put any team at a disadvantage for this one. Wesley is no stranger to bad temperatures and high winds. I do think it somewhat helps Wesley however because their pass defense is not as good as the run defense. The run still seems to be Mary Hardin Baylors strong point with LiDarral Bailey, and his backfield. Wesley is fairly balanced when it comes to offense, and UMHB is seemingly better against the run. I think that this game will once again hinges on the performance of Shane McSweeny. If he can do what he did last week that will mean Wesley is doing well. But we will see how it plays out.

Wesley runs a multiple pro style of offense. They throw a lot of different looks at defenses and are very balanced. Not the spread though

You are consistent. I wasn't meaning anything negative. It was a joke.

I agree that our O works well in cold climates as we like to run, but we did some throwing of our own on Saturday, namely a huge drive against the wind in the 2nd, I believe, when Damian Davis made a spectacular play on a 3rd and long, catching the ball in his finger tips. So, we can throw, LB has gotten better, it will be a good game.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

Ralph Turner

I was surprised that Davis' catch was not one of the plays of the week.  Was it submitted?   :)

And i would argue this is due in part to the much maligned pistol. You only get better in the trowing game with reps and te pistol did that this season.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.
