Congratulations to Jake Mullin, winner "of the FRS Quarterback Performance of the Year contest.

The results of the fan voting (conducted via social media) were announced as a part
of the 2012 All-Star Football Challenge show on ESPN2 prior to Sunday's Super

Thanks to the McMurry Press Release for the verbiage!   ;)

For some reason there are only 17 members on line right now.  I wonder why? :P

I second that congratulations. CONGRATS JAKE!
I would like to note that twice in the last year a D3 guy has gone up against the big boys of D1 and have taken home the trophy.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

ETBU releases their schedule with times to be determined

Sep 1 vs. Wesley College
Sep 8 @ Austin College
Sep 15 @ Willamette University
Sep 29 @ Texas Lutheran
Oct 6 vs Louisiana College
Oct 13 @ Hardin-Simmons
Oct 20 vs Howard Payne (Homecoming)
Oct 27 @ Mississippi College
Nov 3 vs Mary Hardin Baylor
Nov 10 vs Sul Ross State

Obviously the first game of the season is HUGE for the Tigers.  Their is plenty of talent returning on offense, but this will be the debut of a different attacking style of the pistol than in years past for the Tigers.  A win here can catapult this bunch to great things, a loss and we'll be saying the same things about ETBU as we have in the past 3-4 years.  @ Austin is winnable for the Tigers, and @ Willamette is a tough road test but not out of this world to think the Tigers can come home with a victory.

The conference opener is another big game for ETBU if they are going to seriously contend for a conference championship next season.  For some reason TLU has had ETBU's # the last 2 seasons and the Tigers really need this win heading into a big 2 game stretch.  The first 3 games are all going to be the biggest game of the season up to that point for the Tigers.  Can the Tigers win that conference opener against a team who has played them tough in the past? Can the Tigers break the streak against LC? Can the Tigers get an elusive win in Abilene?

IF IF IF IF IF IF IF ETBU can find a way to start 3-0 in conference then I believe they have 2 winnable games in the middle of the conference slate.  Do I think they are pushovers? NO! Far from it actually, but they are winnable for ETBU.

The game at home on Nov 3 against UMHB is another HUGE opportunity for ETBU, I personally don't think it is out of the realm of possibility for this game to have direct Conference Championship implications.  Finishing up Nov 10 is either going to be a great chance for the Tigers to end the regular season at home with a W, either for the seniors or for a championship.

Now with all that being said I think there are 3 keys for the Tigers in 2012.
1) Find a way to replace the rushing output and big play potential of Sed Harris.  I think that ETBU has a more than capable replacement at QB, but somehow they are going to have to replace or duplicate in some other way the home run threat that Sed Harris brought to the table.
2) Finish ball games.  You can't hold the lead at the end of the 1st qtr in all 5 of your losses and at the half in 3 of those and let them slip away.  Just can't happen.
3) Rise to the occasion.  The schedule sets up for ETBU to make a significant run at the ASC IF all the pieces fall into place.  Now the Tigers just have to do something with it.

Lago Vista's Tai Gadison (QB, 5'10") says he is going to UMHB (incorrectly reported as a signing by local media).  Was at Rouse HS last year, moved to Lago Vista this season and sat out.   Father, Joe Gadison, is an assistant T&F coach at Concordia.

Saw an article about this same player in the Austin American Stateman which was the first time I can remember a newspaper actually getting it right, that he choose UMHB and they simply offered him a financial aid package.

In other news for those who don't also read the SCAC board, UMHB will be playing Trinity in the regular season next year on Sept 22nd in Belton.

The reason they got it right was that I nailed the author on twitter.  ;)  The day it came out it said he had a scholarship to UMHB.  After I told him that was a no-no, not to mention a huge, NCAA-compliance issue for D3 he did some research to confirm, had a retraction posted on page A2 the next day and apparently had the original article updated (note the updated time/date).

Danny Davis is a good guy, said he learned something from the experience.

Also have to say Trinity's decision to play UMHB again during the regular season came as quite the shock.   Good move in long run if they're trying to build the program back up, could be painful in the short run.  The only way they get into the playoffs next year is taking a pool B (I guess they could also be in the hunt for a leftover C) which won't be easy.  UMHB on the schedule = good for SOS, if maybe not so good for W/L.  Huge props to Coach Mohr for doing it, though.

Football 2013.

ASC (7) --  ETBU, HSU, HPU, LaCollege, MissColl, SRSU, UMHB  (4 non-conference games)
SCAC (4) -- AC, SU, TLU, TU  (7 non-conference games)

The ASC just became the American Southwest Baptist Football Conference, if we include those congregants of the Cowboy Church and Lobo Baptist Fellowship in Alpine, Tx. :)

Does the NCAA allow for teams to form semi-conference for individual sports? Basically I am asking could the 7 ASC football members and 4 SCAC members compete as a conference in football only?

Is there a concern that the ASC needs to expand in football, yet?  I know that basketball still has enough teams for two divisions but should football get back to at least 8?

The ASC will still have enough for the AQ, 7 teams.

@d3jason

Maybe Wesley joins as an affiliate. Wolverines will have 3 ASC teams on their schedule next season.

The NCAA would allow the ASC to admit the four SCAC schools as affiliate members for football only, but it's hard to believe the SCAC schools, three of which have left the ASC or its predecessor,  the TIAA, would go for that model.  11 teams would mean no out-of-conference games, making it harder for teams to qualify for a Pool C bid due to the SOS for the conference as a whole ending at exactly .500.

Look at it another way:  the SCAC schools will not qualify for a Pool A in their current configuration.  They frankly wouldn't have a collective chance at the ASC's pool A, either; the only thing they would get out of the arrangement would be access to a Pool C and they will have that as independents too (assuming the remaining Pool B bid goes to Wesley; independents are also considered for Pool Cs against the conference non-winners)

Here's another question:  at what point does the ASC get concerned about the SCAC poaching its teams?    Is HSU next on the hit list?

What about another SCAC school adding football and/or poaching a non football ASC school with the promise of adding football.  Say CTX.  To me, CTX fits the SCAC profile relatively well and adding Football would seem to be a good idea with their current new facilities and location.

I know I've learned one thing this year.  Predicting what these schools will do is almost impossible.

There is always the option for another ASC school to add football, another beyond the much-rumored CTX...

UT-Tyler is right in the middle of the hot bed of Texas football.

In any given year I will bet any fan that more winners in Class AAAA and below will come from a 100-mile radius of Tyler than anywhere else in the state.

In the ASC...

9 current football playing members.
McMurry... going to D-II
Football-playing TLU? Gone to the SCAC...
Leaving 7...

Centenary? Gone to the SCAC
Schreiner? Gone to the SCAC...

CTX? Everybody's favorite rumor...

UOzarks?  Not likely
LeTourneau?  Not likely
UTDallas? Not likely
UTTyler?
