Toby, how could you forget about poor Sully?

Out of curiosity, how does the traveling logistics work in the ASC?

I would think most schools would have to fly just to play conference football game.

This would be a Ralph Turner (sniff!) question but I'm pretty sure the bulk of ASC travel is via bus.  The schools, by and large, aren't close enough to major airports to make this work, so they'd all be hopping on commuter planes and switching in Dallas, and the cost of all those flights would be prohibitive.   The trips to way-out-west Sul Ross have drawn many comments over the years.

So the players do indeed take bus trips for all their games. Wow. I will never again complain about traveling a few hours to see Whitewater play a road game.

I believe Mississippi College flies to Sul Ross State (and vice versa?) but otherwise all the travel is buy bus.

Hello all, I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Kyle Robarts - I am the new Around the South Region columnist for D3football. I would love to hear from you on Twitter http://twitter.com/kylerobarts. I am the former McMurry SID, so I am familiar with the ASC, but I would love your help and feedback for interesting story lines throughout the year. Hope you all have a good time getting ready for the first week of football!

Great first article for Around the Region, Kyle.  I am glad that you have taken the job for Jason, who did a great job during his time here.

D O.C.

PC, are you suggesting they all buy a bus?   ;D

OK, how many of the schools DO own their own (?) bus?

That was actually a reference to the drive from HSU to SRSU.

Welcome Kyle - good to have a Texas boy doing the column again.  Thanks also to Jason who did a darned good job over the years!

Re your tweet: @kylerobarts Sul Ross surprise? Lobos could start frmr D2 QB AJ Springer (Lincoln, Mo.) this season - last played in 2010 for run-heavy Blue Tigers #d3fb  sounds like a good story idea for a future column.  How the heck did a former D2 guy from Mo end up way out in West Texas?

Something must have happened at Lincoln (Mo.) because I read about at least one other transfer out of there in Kickoff.

ETBU takes a bus everywhere they go except for 1 plane trip a year.  This year they are flying to Oregon.  They bus trip to Sul Ross State has to be miserable.  What I have heard is that they leave at midnight on Thursday and get into Alpine around 6 in the evening.  Obviously that is stopping to eat and practice at some point.  But still that cannot be fun.

Hello all, I actually registered in 2009 but haven't been on much since then. My boy plays for HSU on the D line. This is his third year and first on Varsity. I am excited for the year and look forward to some discussion as the year goes on. Our QB this year is a D2 transfer from I believe SE OK ST and before that SMU. I haven't seen him at work yet but my boy tells me he is looking pretty good. Take care and God Bless.

I don't know if he won the job - but I was told he came in and practiced with the Lobos in the Spring - looking at Lincoln's stats from the year he played, I think they averaged about 11 passes per game as a team ... Somebody will have to get the ball to the talented receiver at SRS Lee Carothers ... I think it says a lot about a guy who can catch 1,000 yards worth of balls on a team that won just one conference game a year ago

I actually did confirm that he won the job from SRS SID Chris Kennedy - Kennedy said he's a good athlete, and a dual threat; He was 26-42 for 352 yards with 1 TD pass and 2 INT; also scored three rushing TD's - but based on stats from that year it was clear the Blue Tigers were not an offensive juggernaut

The last stat line was from his 2010 season with D2 Lincoln (Mo.) - sorry, thought you all could read my mind  :-[ - He is a California native and played at two different jucos out west before heading to Missouri.

This from Lincoln when his signing was announced:

AJ Springer
6'0", 185, Quarterback
(Chaffey CC/ AB Miller HS/ Fontana, CA)

Coach Cochran – "I am very excited about signing AJ Springer. AJ brings experience and the uncanny ability to make plays.  We look for him to make an immediate impact in our program."

Springer put up big numbers in the JUCO rankings, passing for 2,220 yards with 20 TDs and rushing for 775 yards and 12 TDs.  During Springer's senior year in high school, he passed for 2,226 yards and 21 TDs, while rushing for 1,738 yards and 24 TDs.
