While everyone is playing sleuth concerning the self imposed penalty on coach Fred...did anyone pick up that Blake Jackson and Keith Reineke both signed free agent with the CFL? Both signed with the Calgary Stampeders for the coming 2018 season. As far as i can tell Tedrick Smith is still on the roster for the Redblacks in the CFL as well.

Ralph or Pat,

Do you know how many NCAA infractions occur in DIII football?

I have only been involved since 1997 when Linfield and the Northwest Conference joined.     But, since then, I can't recall many at all.

UMB has always had my greatest respect.

George

This is searchable, but for Division III football only since 1997, there aren't a lot of cases involving major infractions.
Ohio Northern, 2005
Wesley, 2009
Hobart, 2011
Illinois College, 2012
Occidental, 2013
Maine Maritime, 2013
UW-River Falls, 2014
Emory and Henry, 2015
Rose-Hulman, 2015
Kalamazoo, 2016
Susquehanna, 2016
Elmhurst, 2017

My sense from reading the summaries of these cases is that nearly all of them result from misunderstanding from aid departments on whether or not they can consider participation in high school athletics the same way they consider other extracurriculars when awarding aid packages (the quick answer: No.  No they cannot.).  I don't think most of these schools were trying to cheat and gain advantage as much as they were awarding participation in high school athletics the same way they would award participation in glee club or student government or a quiz bowl team.
I agree.

Wally,

Thank you.    That confirmed my belief that Division III is very honest and plays by the rules.     How refreshing!!

This IS a tough call.  To NOT consider participation in hs athletics in the same way as participation in other extra-curricular activities (student government, marching band, etc.) would seem to be anti "jock" discrimination.  On the other hand, to allow ANY consideration certainly tiptoes on "athletic scholarships".  Perhaps D3 has come up with the only possible solution (totally ignore athletic participation), but somehow it just doesn't quite feel right.  Even D3 schools can give scholarships based on musical talent, etc.  A total prohibition on considering athletic participation may be the only ENFORCIBLE way to prevent athletic scholarships, but I'm not sure it is just.

But there is no NCAA competition for musical ensembles.  If a student-athlete wishes to compete in a extracurricular activity sponsored (in small part) by the NCAA, they must comply with the rules imposed by the AA.   If they wish to receive scholarship money based on their athletic ability while participating in formal athletic competition, they can choose to compete at a D2, D1, or NAIA-I institution.  If their talents aren't sufficient to earn a scholarship at such institutions, it's not really much different than not qualifying for an academic (or musical) scholarship for insufficient ability - there is a standard (nebulous though it may be) that has to be met.

This concern may have been one of the factors in the fairly recent "split D3 into D3 & D4" discussion.  D4 schools would have remained "pure", while schools choosing to stay D3 would have been allowed to consider athletic participation/leadership as a factor in *general* aid (or was it vice versa - been a while).

Sad day at TLU. Two of their brightest young coaches have left the program. Matt Cannata O line coach and recruiting coordinator has joined Will Healy's staff at Austin Peay and Jake Bahr D line coach is the new GA at U Conn. Good luck Matt and Jake and thank you for your contributions to the program.

UMHB player Haston Adams gets invite the Cardinals Mini Camp...

BELTON, Texas – Former University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football player Haston Adams is the latest Cru standout to get a shot with the National Football League. Adams signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent shortly after the completion of the 2018 NFL Player Draft Saturday night (April 28th) and will participate in the team's rookie minicamp next month.

Adams, a four-year letterman at defensive tackle from Beckville High School, capped his career by earning All-American honors from the American Football Coaches Association, D3football.com and the Associated Press. He was named American Southwest Conference Defensive Player of the Year after recording 47 total tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Adams also broke up three passes and forced a fumble as a senior. Adams was a Cliff Harris Award Finalist in 2017. He was a two-time All-American and three-time ASC All-Conference selection at UMHB and finished his career among the Cru's career leaders with 58.5 tackles for loss and 21.0 sacks. Adams also returned a pair of fumbles for touchdowns and posted 166 total tackles in his four seasons. He played for the 2016 NCAA Division III National Championship Team and was a member of four NCAA postseason qualifiers and four ASC Championship Teams during his time with the Cru.

Adams will report to the Cardinals minicamp on May 11th. He joins Jerrell Freeman, Nate Menkin, Damian Davis, Javicz Jones and Teidrick Smith as former Cru players to appear in NFL minicamps.

Such sad news, Coach Drass seemed like a great man and he definitely gave UMHB a run for its money. Prayers for his family, friends and the entire Wesley community.

Speaking of missing the game jitters, I saw the first pre season college football magazine of the season. Street and Smith, which ran their traditional 1 page spread on D3 football. I really don't know why I waste the money to read a fairly uniformed take on D3 but I can't help myself.
