Interesting development at QB for HSU: Kyle Jones will start against Belhaven per this week's game notes.
That is interesting. I watched the TLU game and it didn't look very different between qbs to me. Must have been a good few weeks of practice.
My wife and I are Alumni of both UMHB and HSU.  You think you are confused, my kids don't know which Purple and Gold team to pull for.

That, or Coach Burleson wants to change things up after seeing Wooten go 9-18, 57 yds and 4 INTs (2 returned for 2 TDs) last time out.   Belhaven is certainly a low-stress way to see what he can do as a starter (perhaps too low-stress to assess anything?), and it also sends Wooten a message.

The week before facing UMHB is not the best time to have a QB situation, tho.   ;)

I was concerned with that young man Whooten at HSU, after that TLU game I would imagine his confidence is really low

UMHB up 19-0 at halftime in Georgetown. A safety, and three offensive scores on a short field. The defense has been great, but it looks like the offensive ineptitude of the first two games has reared it's ugly head again. The team has been sloppy, but most of it is due to the junior high offensive game plan they're running. Hammack is out, but it's not like Poorman is a chump, so I'm not sure why the staff refuses to turn the offense loose. I don't think the outcome is in doubt with the defense playing so well, but hopefully they get some things worked out on offense in the 2nd half, because if Hammack can't go next week, things could get ugly with this kind of output against HSU.

What a snore game. Looked like The Cru were set to half speed mode, they'll need to turn it to 11 next week. I watched the SW broadcast, it was really funny they attributed the game to the Cru for the most part due to SW's failures, not the Cru's play. Then again the old saying, if your opposition is floundering don't stop them. Cru looked like they were asleep or better yet, Bored.

Whelp, it looks like the storyline for next week's UMHB/HSU matchup is pretty clear. If Hammack is able to go and is close to 100%, the Crusaders have a great shot to win. If anyone other than Hammack is at the reigns, they'll have to rely on HSU serving up several defensive scores like they did against TLU.  Based on a 3 game sample, it's clear that this offense simply isn't competent enough to beat a good team if Hammack isn't running it.

The defense is very good, but unless they are able to put up a couple of TD's to add to the 10-14 points that a Hammack-less offense will probably be held to by the HSU defense, the Crusaders won't have much of a chance.

It was painful watching the offense going through the motions today against Southwestern. I guess when in doubt of what play to run there's always right up the middle. The defense did pretty well, but they are going to need to convert some turnovers into points. If we play Hardin-Simmons next week like we played today we could have our first loss of the season.

Guys. Settle down. It's not that dire. Poorman looked good in the second half. The offense moved the ball, but the game wasn't in doubt, the defense played very well, and the team was definitely looking to get to next week.

Marquis Duncan looked like a man on a mission with his runs. The D was smothering against an all run team. Next week, we will look to shut down Hemphill, and our D is not going to allow Kyle Jones to do anything. He was not good against TLU, and two years ago he was lost against Mount Union. We will be just fine.
Watch out for the wreckingCRU defense!!

Agreed, we got the w, and the defense did really well smothering a dang good running team. I mean heck, they put up 31 on Belhaven last week, we only did 23 lol...

In other news... Managed to get just over 1000 photos from the sidelines... Downloading them now.

Oh I agree, it's like every game we face SW, it is as though the game is not taken as serious that's all. They will rise to HSU, I just thought it was a snore game, go through the motions, get the win, go home. Look SW offensively with the exception of a few moments went no where, on our side we didn't complete possessions, not because SW was formidable, we just seemed kind of listless.

SW was playing their 3rd- and 4th-string QBs.   They're not doing anything to anyone.

The offense has been consistently bad in games that Hammack hasn't played. Don't be fooled by the 2nd half explosion against a terrible Albright defense, or putting up 31 offensive points on short drives against Southwestern.

If Jase can't go next week, the defense will need to hold HSU under 20 points, or get some scores themselves (or from the special teams).

So have the backup QB's this year regressed? I thought coming into this season we were really deep at QB

CowboyAlum261

Kyle Jones had a great debut today, 17-20 and 5 TD's. Competition was inferior but hopefully he built up some confidence going into next week. He showed great poise and accuracy; while he doesn't throw the deep ball that Wooten does, he makes the easy throws and can give us a chance to win next week if he doesn't turn the ball over.

There's a reason he left UMHB. Just sayin.  ::)
